Hi imtools, I know what you are going through, I used to till with my old JD 214 garden tractor. I had both the belt driven and hyd. driven rear tillers. I would till in all four directions with the belt drive, then repeat with the hyd. drive. By the time I was finished, my back was always killing me from having to look over my shoulder. I don't till anymore, but I do use a york rake with my JD 755. But that is with mostly forward motion, and nowhere near as much looking back, so it doesn't bother me as much. I agree with Tom and don't think mirrors will help that much because you will only see the sides behind you and not the center directly behind you. I ordered mirrors for my new tractor, mainly for backing up while snowblowing and mowing will report back on how it works. In the meantime take Tom's advice and limber up and keep the Tylenol handy!!:)

The 60" is about the right size for a 4400. These are heavy grapples and you don't want to reduce your lift capacity by too much with a bigger one.

This is the Kingkutter box disk. KING KUTTER BOX FRAME DISC HARROWS are constructed of heavy steel square tubing. It connects easily to any three-point hitch with category one specifications. The disc gang axles are made of 1" square high carbon steel rods mounted on double thrust sealed steel bearings. These disc harrows have four angle adjustments of 16 degrees, 30 degrees, 44 degrees, and 57 degrees with an easy single bolt adjustment.

The one I was getting has 18" blades and 3mm thick. I like the 3 angle adjustment and the 790# that it weighs. The paint coming off was not too much a concern to me but more that it was surely "salted" all winter being that is was on the "salted sidewalk".

If you've got to move material around a box scraper or a rear blade with end-plates is good. A blade without end-plates won't carry much material on the blade--it wind-rows off one or both ends. True enough a box scraper isn't much good for serious ditching but I think they are better for general grading work. I haven't seen a mid-mount true grader blade on a CUT but that'd be interesting.

I re-graded our drive to extend the slope down to the highway so more of the yard drains to the highway instead of passed the house. To do that I cut off and stored the compacted pit run. Then I cut down the top and moved material down the slope. I finally built a new crown and re-spread and compacted the pit run. It was all done with a box scraper. No loader work here except for final compacting. I drag material around with the box a lot and I don't have serious ditching to do. If I had ditching work, I'd need a blade with end-plates. A blade would also be better for building crowns, but one they're built tilt isn't needed to maintain them unless one of the rear tires has to drive over the top of the crown. 3ph side-levelers give some tilt to a box scraper.

I know that in New York they used to issue farm plates to go from 1 specific property to another, and these were the only properties you were allowed to go between. They were fairly easy to get. I don't know if they still have them.

I wonder if it idles OK around 800 rpm? I also wonder if it misses and gives off gray smoke for a bit if it catches before it dies and if this is a recent problem--could be normal I guess?

Nothing comes immediately to mind except if sounds more like a governor than a pump problem. Manuals for some governors have maintenance routines for lubricating flyweight pivot points. That's something that could be checked out but in general governor work means going to a diesel shop rather than doing it yourself.

I've heard of people using the $10 valve gadget plus an equally inexpensive hand drill motor pump so the pouring is easier.

I don't know if Ballast Star is a similar product to Rim guard, which is derived from beet pulp. It's supposed to be non-corrosive, good at fairly low temperatures and have good weight per volume but also is expensive. I don't know if there are any disposal problems but there are for most other fill fluids.

I'm not sure if CACL outweighs Rim Guard but it does outweigh most other alternatives. I hear that some of the newer foam fill products give better rides than the old stuff but I doubt that foam filling would be desirable except on ground where flat tires are very common. Foam is heavy though.

Uhm, the vicinity of 1,500 hours for a clutch (Art's number) at a rate of 100-hours per year of a typical CUT owner is around 20 years. My 20-year-old tractor has about 700 hours and I figure the clutch may outlast me. I'd replace it and the pilot bearing on principal if it were around 1,500 hours.

There have been clutch and pilot bearing failures discussed here but on tractors around the age of mine. There aren't too many 20-year-old gear tractors discussed here. I can't recall a HST failure discussed except for a few solenoid problems but I forget on which tractors. Art has mentioned a few in general and then mostly due to poor maintenance.

What will need work sooner than the clutch on mine is the shift rails and detent ball. That's from the loader work done by myself and a previous owner who I don't think was a particularly gentle or patient operator. A planned maintenance budget is a good thing.

I like my gears fine but constantly shifting when doing loader work isn't too agreeable and I have a synchromesh TX. When working with a pto implement sometimes the best ground speed is between gears, and I have 12 forward and 4 reverses. There are some other benefits of HST such as more usable traction on the ground and braking.

Ted, you don't know the Service Bulletin number do you? I have had a little problem, almost a delay in turning the key and the starter engaging for several months. The original (1996 I think) battery went last year on my 7234 but I have noticed a starter hesitation/delay recently. This could be the problem.

It's possible I imagine. We had a discussion a few weeks ago on the subject but I can't recall the subject title. There are some issues in selecting a pump if a ready-make kit isn't available. the discussion didn't get into mounting issues.

You might think through the needs for hydraulics that couldn't be satisfied by additional control valves or a power-beyond kit off the loader hydraulics.

Info about your terrain, driveway would make answering easier, but here's some general info anyway.

1) Brush cutters are horsepower hogs! Up to 1" stems on even ground you can probably use one of the lighter cutters. Rough ground or old stumps, stems to 2" etc, a medium duty cutter with a stump-jumper would be better.

2) I can't say enough good things about hydro. Smooth starts, auto-braking, full power at creep speeds are some advantages over manual transmissions. Tractor hydro is not like an atomobile automatic transmission. Hydro uses a variable displacement hydraulic pump - hydraulic motor pair to power the output gears.
You still get a clutch, and 2 or more 'speed ranges' to operate in. Basicly, you set the speed range and throttle, then use the foot pedal(s) to control speed and direction. Excellent for rear snow-blowing as full power is available to the blower even when you creep through a big drift. When starting in mud or snow, or on a hill, hydro is much easier than chutch-and-shift (or chutch-and-spin/lurch).
Good maintenance of filters and fluid is a must for trouble-free hyro longevity. Parts are expensive, but check the cost of splitting the tractor to replace a clutch and throwout bearing.

3) I don't know. Hydrostatic drive has been in use for many years, so some of the utility farm tractors may have it. Check for 'live PTO', the PTO on some old models may stop when the clutch is depressed.

Get some seat time at local dealers. Kubota and Deere usually will let you try a tractor on their lot. It will at least give you a baseline for comparison, and let you get to know your dealer (you'll be buying supplies and parts).

Zippy; I'm going to do the same thing to my 4410, I have all the componets on hand but time has been short lately. I've never looked at where the mid pto is located on a Kubota or how much room there is around it to mount things. So make sure you have room to put a universal joint shaft similar to what would power a mid mount mower, I would'nt advise mounting the pump directly to the pto shaft, been there done that, any slight mis alingment wears expensive things out real fast. I've did a lot of work with hydraulic motors, pumps, etc. It's not that hard to figure out what you need so far as a pump long as you know the displacement per revolution, operating rpm etc. Bring up "The Surplus Center" site, call their tech line they've allways been real helpfull so far as matching the equipment you need for the job you want to get done. There was a thread on the board just a couple weeks ago that got into this pretty deep, lots of good ideas there too, check it out. Best of luck, Frank.

My old 8N is down to just the body on the jack stands stipped oven cleaned and just about ready to paint. Is there anything anyone here can think of that I should do to it before I start painting? I changed the fluids already. Planning on starting the primer as soon as weather hits 55-60 again so any input would be welcome?<br>

Just a thought, your warranty must be getting close to being done (I did not catch the year) If it is still under warranty maybe you should take it in since you have over 200 hours on it anyway and have them look it over? Crack it open, maybe they will find something and then you may get new parts in it for nothing. You do realize that RIGHT after the warranty expires something rlated to this problem will break! Murphys Law you know?

I would have to check the specs, but if you could set the roof air so that it pulls fresh air (not re-circulating air), it should "pressurize" the cab and force cold air out any cracks or crevasses, thus preventing the intrusion of dust, pollen, etc.

The shifting should get easier as it gets broken in, This is a mechanical shuttle, must stop to shift. We have asked the factory to make the lever a little longer to make it easier to reach and to shift, you could probably add an extension onto your lever if you wanted to. But wait till you have a few hours to see if you really need it.
