Some of the stuff that can really screw up the mix is copper. Even very small amounts will make any iron based alloy turn to unstable brittle crap. Some of our old cars (crushed whole) have more than an acceptable amount in them (wires starters, etc) and when melted whole will turn out bad metal. Tractors craking are likely made with some of this contaminated alloy.
Most US car makers make there blocks out of cast iron which is as pure as most low alloy soft steels and are very hard to break.
Do you think we get get the facts from our tractors Manufacturers as to what the mix is.

Does anyone know where I can get a hold of the hooks to weld onto a bucket for accepting a set of bucket forks? I am looking at this as the lowest cost option to have a set of forks for my 410 loader on my 4100. Has anyone out there tried bucket forks? and if so, is the bucket stout enough to handle average loads without abuse? Or does anyone have an idea that would be cheaper?

The winch I plan to make will use an old drum from a junk winch with a 2' circumfrence...the commercial 3pt logging winches seem to have a line speed of between 2 to 5 ft/sec. I've found some series 60 roller chain with a 44 tooth gear. I am hoping to gear down to at least 4/1 but ideally more like 9/1. To some extent I can control the speed with the rpms on the pto. I like the engine idling at about 1200 rpm anyway which will put the pto around 270 rpm...getting me into the right range on line speed. I plan on copying the commercial winches with a blade/barbed grapple that will brace the tractor against the pull and then hold the end of the log up for skidding. I plan on driving the drum through an old magnetic clutch I found for a front pto (I hope it will handle the torque)...If it works this will be nicer than the lanyard operated manual clutches I have seen, and it will still work as a

Can we start a discussion on what to do with aspen/popple/poplar since this whole project started for me because since I coulndt get any loggers to do the job for the logs I figured that for the money I would spend I could get most of the equipment myself :-)
I am open to any suggestions anyone can give...I have learned more in the last 4 weeks about tractors and logging and falling trees than I ever had the slightest idea ever existed!

I bought a 4200 hydro last winter and still had to wait 30 days before delivery but, that's not all that bad considering the waits others have gone through when they ordered later in the year. I doubt you will see dealer incentives except on close-out models but you will probably get more personal attention from the dealer.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but something to prolong those air filter changes. Cut the legs off an (old pair) of pantyhose and stretch it over the filter. Use a rubberband to keep the pantyhose in place. A set of womans hose could probably give you at least 4-6 pre-filter changes, depending upon the length of your wife's legs. <br>Also take notice: pantyhose are stretchable, in that the

Take them and run...<br>You can get spindle plates, which are a large washer with the holes pre drilled at most out door equipment dealers. Most will be able to match up the spindle also.<br>You can always sell the tiller for more than you are paying for both, if your ground is too tuff or your tractor just cannot spin it effectively.
