On the JD 4000 series the overrun was as much as 6%. This would vary depending on what tires were on the tractor. The MFWD drive gears were changed toward the end of the 4000 series production run (Jan 2000). The new gears reduced the front axle overrun to around 2.5%. It makes a big difference in how much hp was required to drive the tractor with the MFWD engaged while driving on a hard surface. It is not recommended to drive with the MFWD engaged unless it is needed (muddy conditions, etc.) where the wheels will have slippage. Leaving the MFWD engaged when it is not need increases fuel consumption, powertrain wear, and tire wear.

Does anyone know who sells more tractors, Branson or Century. From a web check their are 66 Century Dealers with 500 miles of me (and I am only 200 miles from the Atlanic Ocean to the east) and there are only 75 Branson Dealers in the whole low 48 States.<br>

Branson appears to have a better marketing network. I see Branson on ebay all the time (6 tractors listed right now), but have never seen a Century on there. Marketing appears very agressive for only 75 dealers.

My 86 Jetta is a non-turbo, indirect-injected, 1.6L diesel and is usually good for 40mpg in winter and 45 in summer depending on fuel quality. The wife's 2001 Jetta TDI will range from 45 to 55mpg also depending on fuel quality.

The TDI is a great motor, plenty of power and superb fuel economy. No problems in traffic unlike the 86, which at 42hp is a bit of a dog. We have the 5-speed with the TDI and would recomend that over the automatic just from my own personal experience of having driven both.

The new Beetle and Golf will get 2-5mpg better MPG because of better aero and weight than the Jetta.

BTW blended winter diesel is still cheaper than regular gas here, for now at least!

Thank you Tom for both replies. What should I learn regarding puting boats, trailers and hauling logs. I figured that boats and trailers simply connect on my draw bar and away I go. I know that backing up a hay wagon is tricky (haven't done that in 38 years since my school days on the farm. As for logs, I have log "clevis" (correct term??) on a swivel. Figured I run a chain from thbucket, or the blade or a 3 pt hitch bar, Raise the tractor end of the log a little and skid it where I want it. Being sure The log is small enough for the tractor to handle. Have I missed much. If you have more hints, fire away. It's been quite a while since my farming youth.

Yeah, I had a retaining wall. Then the neighbor complained about the total height of the pool fence + retaining wall and the town gave me 3 weeks to fix it and threatened me with legal action. So I brought in 64 yards of fill and banked it up against the retaining wall so that it is no longer a retaining wall and just an elevated grade from the lawn. I had originally planned to finish it off with stone that I hauled off a mountain. The stone is now in a big pile in my lower yard. I am not sure the neighbor or the town did the best thing for themselves.

Blueman - its wbowhunt that asked about IM. No - no problems or complaints with the IM502. Seems like a good size for my JD4310 (27 PTO horse). I chopped up a brush pile of dead wood maybe 50 foot x 50 foot. Had to sort the wood out, cut bigger stuff for firewood with the chain saw, placed <= 1 1/2" stuff in rows and let the wife chop it up. Later I chopped up a second pile of brush.

I have nothing to compare to. I haven't use it to mow grass or chop green wood. I had to talk the wife into buying it - since I let her do the chopping she loves it and now thinks its our best attachment. It seems to be heavy built and handled the dead wood no problem.

I have hot water floor heat in the slab of my garage. It is run with a boiler however. I expect that the boiler is more efficient at heating up a continued stream of water while the hot water heater is better at maintaining a reservoir of ready hot water.

I do have "instant" hot water in my house. This is done with a circulating loop and pump as you describe. One thing that I have noticed with this setup is the wide temperature range between where the hot water heater kicks on and where it kicks off. This loop also has a solar water heating panel on the roof to recover some of the heat lost during the circulation process, but it does not seem to be all that effective. I am not sure that the panel is installed correctly.

I don't ever use hot water floor heat in a shop building, because I tend to drill into the slab and anchor heavy equipment and so forth. Drilling into one of those water lines would really ruin your whole day.

A friend of mine told me he had a yellow welder generator that he bought for $200 from a guy. He knows nothing about welders and such, I know a little. I can get some info off data plate and machine is in fair shape.<br>

It's a giant dynamo mounted on a pod of gas. I have definate feelings about the integrity of this machine. It looks like something from WW2. Maybe newer but built in china or something. That's the feeling I get. Will collect data plate info and research. <br>
Just wondering if anybody knows of these.<br>

Drankin's info is good, although 100 hrs would be the outside. Normally these smaller diesels will run higher rpms's. If your machine has 75 hrs+ on it, drive out the out dino oil and put in some synthetic. Long term a good idea for any lube need in any machine of any sort. Your location ie: temperature, will dictate the weight of the oil. Match the dino oil wt recommended to the associated synthetic. Mobil 1 and Amsoil top the list.

For my 2-cents, the �sub�-CUTs are probably too small and not enough horsepower for that amount of property. I have a 2210 and 2.5 acres, which works out just about right. Although occasionally I wish I had went with the 4110. IMHO, I would start with the 4110 and maybe go larger.

Dennis, sorry the ear cleaning isn't working out, my lab is in the water 3-4 times a week between April thru December and we havn't seen an infection in 5 years, but we do a lot of maintainence. Please keep us posted on what your vets come up with.

Brokenarrow, I completely agree with your vet statement. I grew up next door to the local farm vet, and still drive the hour+ to have the lab checked out by him and now by his daughter. With my shepherd I had to go to a "contracted" vet who i didn't see eye-to-eye with, It just seemed that he didn't have much common sense.

Don, they are about as simple to setup as falling off a log is.

The only thing you need to watch is if they don't spin free every now and then, and / or they live outside, a little rust can develop and seize them solid by adding too much friction to the mix. My dealer advised me to lock the gearbox end with a bar and ease the clutch up to SLOWLY spin a revolution or two and wipe off any rust prior to use if it had sat for long.

The angle at which your rake meets the ground, using a 3pt hitch without downforce feature, will determine the aggressiveness of "bite." The rake frame should be adjusted so that it is level with a flat surface when lowered all the way down for normal use. To increase bite, adjust the top link so the teeth of the rake tilt back about 3 to 5 degrees. This will rough up a surface fairly well. But remember, a rake is not a planting implement.
