Blower is holding up well. I will probably make a few changes when mud season arrives though. The adjustable skid shoes are not shaped for my pit run drive, I'll replace them with Fisher 'mushroom' ones so they slide in the turns instead of fetching up and lifting rocks. Probably weld on another wear plate under the auger so the unit floats over the stones better.
I've gone through a handful of shear pins, mostly my fault trying to 'widen out a little'. Not all grade 2 bolts are the same. One batch could bog the engine if I went too fast, the ones I am eating now are as durable as spagetti, got to be real careful not to overload the auger.
Some 'standard' wear on the auger, fan and shroud. Those little stones are very abrasive. No problems at all with the gearbox or chain.
I clear a 1600' drive plus about 10,000 sq-ft combined parking and work areas so it does get a workout for a non-commercial unit.

I think Kioti is definately worth a look. I have a DK 35 and like it alot, a very nice tractor.
But I have also used a few Kubota L-series tractors and I liked them also.
Test drive both/ compare tractor, dealer, features and price, and go from there.

I worked for a company in the early 90's that developed pre-GPS radiolocation technology for tracking vehicles. We had discussions with GM about them licensing the technology, then GPS came out and they went that way. The radiolocation technology was superior in several ways - near instant speed/bearing/altitude/lat/lon info, more accurate (at the time), and no back-channel was required to locate something. GPS can answer the question of "Where am I" but without a back-channel of some kind it can't answer the question of "Where are you".

Anyway, law enforcement used this technology a LOT. They used to put them on the vehicles of sexual predators and when their cars came within X yards of a school zone the computer would generate an alarm and they'd go pick the guy up. There was a computer theft ring operating in LA, and they put a location device and battery in a bait computer case. When it was stolen they followed it and busted the ring. We used them a lot to track and recover stolen vehicles. Target stores was losing a trailer full of goods to theft nearly every week - when they equipped the trailers with motion activated location devices the thefts stopped instantly (probably an inside job).

Anyway, I was a first hand witness to how the system was abused. A lot of celebrities had the units installed in their vehicles and the operators would always track these people just for fun. They would track the vehicles of friends and relatives to spy on their activities. The company gathered FAR more personal information than was necessary to do the job, and it was all online. Any operator could find where anyone lived, where they worked, where they went during the day, etc. They would give the information to anyone that asked.

After this experience I can tell you I don't want On-Star and I don't want a black box in my vehicle.

True, some components may not be the absolute best available. My point was one of quality control--having 1 manufacturer should make for closer tolerances and a better fit, with the result of longer service and fewer repairs. I can't see having some parts made in Mexico, some in India, and some made who-knows-where being an advantage over 1 maker who controls the entire manufacturing process. That's what I am hoping for, anyway!!

I bought a pellet stove a few years back. There is very little mess and it supplies most of the heat required for this house. I also have the heat pump which is water based and it supplies supplimental heat on the coldest days.
I have a outside insulated wood boiler and like the system. As it burns very slowly. I doubt I would use much more than a couple of cords in a season. I could easily heat the house with the system and may add it into the mix, but at present the pellet stove heats for about 200$ a season with no wood cutting or feeding. I built a exchanger and currently it heats the pool.
In MA I had a coal stove and burned some coal but was not overly impressed with the mess.

I paided $9000 for my 2001 B7500 (140 hrs) w/la302, rck60 mmm. They usally go for $13,000 to $13,500 for that set up. Depends on hours. You don't have a MMM so figure about $1200 less, add $500 for the 3pt stuff. They guy selling it has several reasons why he needed to get rit of it. He also really wanted to help get me started. Even though i already owned another tractor. I still let him borrow it evey once in a while(kind of part of the deal).

By the way do you want to sell just the top and tilt hydraulics and hardware on the tractor to make it work. I would love one of thoses.

Chief my thought exactly. Its only a square tube with a 1/2x2" flat stock. a little cutting some welding and done. OH YEAH some green paint :-)

I use my boom for the same thing and hook down near the braces. Booms are only $100-$150. I've used mine for over 15 years and never bent it but have made it groan a few times.

A quick comment: That doesn't seem like a very sincere/hungry/agressive trade-in quote from your dealer for your X tractor. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but if you want a better trade-in price for the X, you might take the opportunity to let your dealer know right now that his trade-in allowance might not allow you to buy new, or used, unless he can make sure you are getting some equity out of your trade-in. Don't forget to mention the BX option to him, even if you might have set it aside for now. Keep him honest. Pete

For the 790 the only part that I am concerned about are the fuel injectors assy. I have a buddy with a JD 4510 4WD and he bought the 3 year ext warranty for that reason as his dad is a serious lawnscaper for his part time job with a NH tractor about 55 hp, can spread a dump truck load of dirt in 8 minutes with box blade, has had fuel injector problems and on his past tractos he trades every few years with about 3000 hours has had trouble and one set of injectors cost more than the warranty. And after some more investigating that seems to be the one PRICEY breakdown on tractos that happens pretty regularly, like transmission in chevy trucks with more than 70k miles. So just investigating to see if warranty avail and weigh the pros and cons.

Has anyone had or heard of any other pricey breakdowns on the JD 790 that could influence buying a warranty if avail ?

I-Match isn't a necessity, but if you are buying new implements anyway it's nice to have. You just need to be aware that not all implements are I-Match compatible. If you buy some that aren't you will either have to remove the I-Match to use them or have them modified. I'm having two implements modified right now (chipper and carry all) to work with mine.

With I-Match you can hook up a rear implement in just a few seconds without getting out of the seat (unless you have to hook up the pto). Without it you will need to get out and hook it up the hard way - sometimes this involves the use of various 2x4s or pry bars to lever the implement around to get things lined up. If you don't have I-Match it would be good to have telescoping links so you can adjust link length a bit without moving the tractor and those are an option on the 4310 (that I think cost more than I-Match).

Anyway, once everything works with I-Match it's a pleasure to use, but it's not a necessity. It's biggest advantage comes when you change rear implements a lot.

Right off the top I'm not sure what to look for specifically. Somebody here will.
I do know that most TLB (tractor,loader,backhoe)in dealers lots with more than average hours on them are rental returns. Although for a 6+ year old machine 1000 hours is not too bad. Of course in the grand scheme of things I think the number that people use for life on these types of diesel engines is aprox 3500 - 4000 hours per cylindor. So if compression seem OK and the hydraulics are in good working order, check welds, brackets, and overall metal fatigue. Hopefully some "expert advice" will come along soon. There's plenty of folks here that have xlnt CUT and general tractor knowledge
