I finally got to see the tractor today. The tractor is a 1997 and is in very good shape. The loader is quick attach and is in good shape however the pins that attach the bucket are pretty sloppy. The Woods 7500 backhoe looks like it got the most use, all of the pins are fairly loose. All of the hydraulics look good and no evidence of leaks. The dealer has serviced the tractor since new and is going to price up some services to include in addition to price.

So at the end of the day I think I will buy it even with the sloppy pins on the Woods 7500. The backhoe will work for occassional tree stump work required.

If you decide to go with a diesel; I suggest you steer clear of the 6.0 Power Stroke. Ford is having SERIOUS problems with these engines and is considering discontinuing the 6.0 PS. The Super Duty's have a fantastic Crew Cab but the rest of the truck power train wise is not up to par. You can't go wrong with a Cummins powered Dodge 6 speed manual in my opinion. Stay away from automatics in all the diesels.

I just let it run for awhile 15-20 mins. before I crank it up to 2500rpms. Not a problem even well below zero. The wind
chill factor does not apply to machines. It's based on the degree of heat loss of exposed skin.

I think there's a LOT of creative advertising in the 4x4/atv winch products. Some ads equate pulling power to the weight of the 'rolling load', which is very deceptive. If some of these winches really had the capacity they claimed, there'd be an awful number of amputees around.
Please don't take me wrong, but you're beginning a very dangerous project. Small winches like the Farmi come with remote winch controllers, guards, slip clutches, stabilizers; cable and fittings appropriate to the load. It could cost more to build one unless you have a real good source of parts. If you damage the PTO or yourself, the cost easily could exceed a new winch.

I don't know your tire size, but I would choose the V-bar type. If the 2-link ladders are available in V-bar style, then I guess it's almost a toss-up; I'd go for the most economical solution. I'd guess that the price difference wouldn't be much.
My 12.4X24 R1 Duo-grips were ~$375, which I feel was well spent.

In Michigan you don't have to pay sales tax for farm use. The dealer however will ask you for your tax exempt ID number. Once in a while they will let you by if you give them you corporate name like jo-blow farms,LLC.

I agree with TomG. You have to decide what the machine is going to do the most. I have allot of trees, etc. to mow around so I use riding mowers. For a work tractor you may want to go bigger like in the 30HP range. With a larger tractor you can lift and push more. The brush hogging takes PTO power depending on sapling sizes, etc. On the otherhand, you may be able to rent a bigger unit from your local dealer for the occasional brush hogging job.

Dave: That's about right for the lighting load. It should be no problem for most alternators but the alternator rating is likely in your manual. It might extend recharge times slightly but it's good to keep a 'smart' trickle charger on the battery in cold climates anyway. Your tractor may well have an aux outlet that would carry the load. Lights with their own switches so they can be turned off independent of the head lights are good.

Thanks Beagle. It sounds like a regen feature on a loader fast dump valve (and something I sure wish I'd have) but maybe it's more than that.

One of the advantages of open centered systems is that they operate at low pressure although at full volume when no hydraulics are active. It does take time for pressure to build when a valve is operated and that can have the benefit of reducing shock loads. I suppose there's a possibility of too much of a good thing though.

I can sure see how it'd be good to have good control over pressure when going from forward to reverse in a HST. I didn't know how it's done though. I can see how tapping into a HST pump circuit could be tricky.

I wouldn't get rid of the plow truck until some time/distance stuff is figured. Tractors don't go very fast from one place to another and for most snows a truck goes faster even when it's plowing.
I'd check liability issues before thinking about blowers. I've heard of them used commercially but they do crunch up things in the auger and throw rocks out of the chute.

Lots of parking lots are cleared with blades but most are tall plow blades that'll carry a bunch of snow on the blade. Snow still comes off the blade ends and then takes more passes to clean it up; or it has to be wind rowed, loaded and transported. Extra long passes cleaning things up could take a lot of time if limited by a tractor's speed. A snow box might simplify that problem if it could drag a lot of snow around. I haven't seen a snow box but I imagine they're like a big lightweight box scraper. I have heard of scrapers used in parking lots to pull snow out from between parked vehicles--might work for fire hydrants too. A scraper wouldn't hold much snow thought but one could be used for back-filling trenches.

I've never heard the story and I doubt the voltages on lines close enough to the ground to be contacted would be enough for voltage to jump from the rims to the ground around the tires. If the were, it sure could happen by starting a fire under the tires. Our downed 14K line did start a bunch of fires. Suppose it could happen because if nothing else any CACL in the tires is very conductive.

I've heard stories of voltage both clamping a person on to the source as well as flinging them clear. If she didn't clear the tractor as in Blizzard's comment most anything could happen. Voltage causes strong uncoordinated muscular contractions. The usual cause of death from electrocution is respiratory or cardiac arrest and doesn't require prolonged contact with a source. One of my BIN's friends was killed a few years back in a similar situation.

On the subject it might worth knowing that you can't be sure you're safe around a downed line even if you're OK and aren't moving. Current can travel through moisture on surface material to a good ground at considerable distance. Heat from the current dries out the path and then another path, maybe in an entirely different direction, has the least resistance. That was the case in our downed lined. The bush would flare up; the fire crew would fling shovels of sand from the highway on the fire and then it flare up somewhere else. It took the utility about 1.5 hours to shut down the line. I'd be one of them doing the flinging now.

The one thing I didn't like was the single stage blower.
I don't believe they offer the rider with two stage?
Other than that they are a tank. I know of one that 30 yrs old and still mowing and blowing. I don't know if Gravely
is still making a rider with a MMM ? But they build a rugged
machine as well.
