hi guys, getting ready to order f350 srw supercab dont really need for towing right know but would 5.4 w4.10 be ok? or v10 w3.73s be in same gas milage range?

Go with the diesel if you want to have the best pullin power and greater milage even if not pullin. ....

I have a F250 supercab with 5.4 V8 with 3.73. I haul up to 10,000 lbs. on occasion but mostly under the 8800 lb. rating. I don't haul that often. Highway mileage is about 14-15 mpg empty and 9-12 mpg hauling depending upon load and flatness of terrain. I hear the V10's are real gas hogs. If you go with the diesel you will be in the 19-20 mpg range empty and 15-16 loaded. Definitely the diesel has lots, lots more power.
If you do allot of short term driving, store the vehicle outside and don't want to mess with a block heater or don't like the slightly louder motor noise or dealing with diesel fuel you may want to stick with gas.
The decision is how much and how often do you plan to haul. Definitely go diesel even with small amounts of hauling on hilly terrain. If you drive allot and plan on putting lots of miles on the truck and keeping 70 mph or under, diesel is the way to go. If you drive on the expressway over 70, the diesel gets out of its efficiency curve and mileage will drop to 16-17 per my neighbor. He has 2001 F350 quadcab.
I don't know what I will do next time. My 2002 has only 23,000 miles. It is along way from replacing. If I do the trailer thing and tour the US, diesel is it! ....

I have a 2002 F250 5.4/3.73 and have hauled up to 12000lbs with no trouble. I have been told the v10 is a major gas hog. I am very happy with the truck. I don't think you will be happy with 4.10s in the truck too much gear for what you are doing. ....

If you decide to go with a diesel; I suggest you steer clear of the 6.0 Power Stroke. Ford is having SERIOUS problems with these engines and is considering discontinuing the 6.0 PS. The Super Duty's have a fantastic Crew Cab but the rest of the truck power train wise is not up to par. You can't go wrong with a Cummins powered Dodge 6 speed manual in my opinion. Stay away from automatics in all the diesels. ....

thanks for the follow ups! will be used around town mostly about 5k miles a year cant afford diesel,gas good enough ,if i go 5.4l difference between 3.73 vs 4.10 milage ? ,and highway rpm 200rpm? what rpm at 65-70mph ,not towing and in overdrive. ....

If you are not going to be towing. Go with the 3.73's or 3.55's if available. I can see you point with going with gas for your use. You will hate the truck if you decide to do much moderate to heavy towing. I had a Suburban with 4.10'd and all of the heavy duty towing goodies and it was a dog pulling my boat. Take a look at my profile pic #1. It was a gas hog no matter how it was driven and had no power. The Cummins is fantastic in pulling power and get 22- 23 mpg empty/ 15 - 18 towing. I don't drive it more that you plan to drive yours but I found out the hard way to buy what meets my needs the hard way. The Cummins is not cheap but does just what I want it to and am VERY satisfied with it. If you are not satisfied with the truck, it is not a good deal at any price. ....

Not to be a smart a$$ but If you dont plan on towing, why are you looking at an F350?
An F150 will easily tow 5000lbs all day and occasionally 7000 to 8000lbs for a limited time.
Unless you need the four door and an 8ft bed, I would get an F150 (I like the looks of the 150s over the 250s and 350s better anyway) with 5.4 & 4.10s. The reason for the 4.10s. If you dont like the RPMs on the highway, put one or two sizes larger tire on it and it will look better and still have good power. If you start towing more often, go back to the factory sized tires and get you power back.
If youre set on an F350, get the big engine because the truck weighs quiet a bit more than the 150 and the resale on the V10 or diesel will be much better.
I have an F350 dually w/7.3PS & 4.10s (with dumpbody).
I like it for what I use it for (its a dumptruck) but I wouldnt want the diesel or 4.10s (unless I put larger tires on it)as a daily driver. ....

i used to have one with 9 inch lift and 38 inch tires 8ft tall! I like the look of the tall ride height ,could use f150 but tend to buy everything as heavyduty as possible.The f350 w/plow package sits 2 inchs higher in the front . I figured that if i went w 4.10s it wouldnt kick in and out of overdrive in the pa mountains,and when i put taller tires on it the truck wouldnt be as much of a dog .Anything is an improvment over my 90 e150 w/300-6/c6/ 3.55 gear ,i know the drivetrain in this truck will not be as dependable! I guess i still like that bigfoot look? Im going to get supercab 6.75 bed , I know it will be a useless truck but i havent had a new vehicle in 14 years. ....

The tork ratings with the Diesel will allow you to use them bigger tires you seem to like without killing power. then if you need more hook up the Juice to it, And you'll have a screamer that when driven like an adult will out do the gasser in milage by far. them big tires really kill the milage on the gasser's no matter what gear your running. ....
