A farmer will tell you the less you drive over it the better. I.E. more trips over the same piece of dirt actually compacts the soil beneath the top layer that you are working. Go over it only as frequently as necessary. It you have clay and work it while it is wet, you will get big lumps of dirt that will not break up. If you are trying to grow crops or a garden, their roots will have trouble penetrating through the compaction particularly when clay is present. The more you work the soil, the more moisture that you will take out of it. You generally need as much moisture as possible for seeds to germinate and for later during summer dryspells.

Sometime next summer, take a crop tour. About mid summer try to find a dry bean or soy bean field. You can actually see the difference in crop height where the tractor wheels have gone through. The beans are generally shorter. With dry beans, just as they rippen, the field will yellow and the rows adjacent to the tire tracks will be greener and slightly behind.

As far as the discing, the previous posts are correct. Usually you will angle the front forward and the rear backward. The notched discs in the front will cut up foilage/vegetation like last years cornstalks.

I would generally recommend to plow virgin grassland and then disc it afterward. Fall plowing, spring discing is best.

Chief,

The windbreaker cab costs $175.95 and is designed to fit most tractors. It doesn't fit any without some extra work. It has some tubing in a "U" shape that lays horizontal just below the windshield that you feed thru the vinyl cab something like a tentpole going in a tent loop. At the right rear, I made a bracket with a small u-bolt to hang onto this tubing. At the back side of that bracket I drilled holes for a large u-bolt that goes around my ROPS. At the front by the steering wheel console they supply some brackets with suctions cups to hold the mid-part of the "U" shaped frame work up. At the left side where you enter this "U" bracket has a bolt and hinge so it acts like a door. At the left rear I made another bracket with u-bolt to the ROPS. I hook the door side onto it and hold it in place with a bungee cord. Around the side of the tractor hood are some vinle sheets that you tie on. That brings heat back to the cab. This is all we had back on the farm in the 50's and 60's before the big real cabs were offered.

Most tractor manufacturers will sell a cab which is a little more heavy duty for about $1,200.00. I'm really happy with mine with the little investment.

I would recommend this cab to anyone that wants some protection, and doesn't want a large investment and is willing to accept it as it is. It is my second year.

When I had my L245 I ran into the same problem. The Kutoba paint is outrageously expensive. Ronnie over on tractorsmart told me that plain ole' chevy orange is a pretty good match and is a whole bunch cheaper.

I just traded my 2210 in last week for a 4115 mostly because of this. Now I do not know all the Technical things to explain it but the 2210 would not raise the implement high enough nor did I have the control that I have with my new 4115. On the 4115 if I move the lever a little bit the implement will move a little bit and stop, if move lever again it moves a little bit more and stops. On the 2210 if I moved the lever a little bit the implement moves slow but keeps moving if moved more it moves faster but keeps moving it does not stop unless put back to neutral.
I am sure someone will give a better answer.
The 2210 was nice but I thought over time the use of the 3-point for me would be better to up grade. So far I Really like my 4115.

Art/Chief, I also like the sites that give you a directory right away. I don't read the dealership promotional propaganda, at least not right away.

One thing that you rarely see that might be intesting are pictures of the service area and service personnel. As an earlier posting mentioned, putting faces on your people could be helpful.

I am thinking the same thing Billy is. The oil pick up screen is towards the back third of the transmission case on my tractor. Have you asked your dealer about this phenomenon? Does sound kinda strange. I have always lost traction first and never have stalled mine.

Considering:
1) Ground speed should be safe.
2) Implement RPM and ground speed within Mfg's. guidelines.
3) Engine should not be abused.

Engine speed should generally be above the RPM that peak torque occurs, for heavy loading. This allows the engine to recover if the load increases, instead of stalling. Setting engine RPM to peak horsepower or adjusting PTO RPM to 540 ( or whatever) guarantees this condition.
For snow blowing the fan and auger work best higher RPM's.
Ditto for rotary mowers, etc.

One glaring exception is that post hole diggers should be operated at the slowest practical RPM, usually just above idle speed. But then this is not a 'loaded' situation.

On the original version 1.0 we used T shaped bolts to tighten the pipe in place. It didn't work too bad, it was certainly easier to turn with gloves on than fiddling with a wrench.

On version 3.0, that a friend made for his place, he welded a short length of bar straight out off several all-steel lock-nuts the right size and uses them as jamb nuts to prevent the bolts from backing off from vibration or snow hitting them. He says the trick is to get it really snug in the first place then lock them in place.

I downloaded the Field Manual and it looks pretty good. A lot of the info is similar to the JD FOS manual I mentioned. I'm going to print it and then I'll be able to compare it the FOS manual. My first impression is that it has more detail the FOS, which is better for me. The FOS drawings and pictures seem better.

Well I have been doing alot of research and found out from Hen Holland that the NH68 baler has a recommended min hp rating of 15hp. This is and older baler made from 1956 to 1958. I know alot of farmers then used the smaller tractors to bale with, I was concerned about the weight and my TC29 with loader and fluid in the tires weighs about 3478 lbs. That is more than a Farmall H in hp and weight, more than a 8n Ford and the 600 series. I also talked to my NH dealer and he said that my TC29 will easily handle the NH68 baler. There were alot of these older balers around and now everyone is going to the large round or square bales or the throwers so they are pretty cheap. I found a real nice one for $300.00 that was used last summer. Also there are still new parts available for this baler and my dealer tells me they are pretty much indestructible and very reliable. This sure beats $15,000 for a new compact baler. I just thought I would update this information in case anyone else is looking for a baler for their compact tractor for their horses as I am. Thanks to everyone for their input!!

AV8R, you might want to download Spybot Search & Destroy to kill any adware or spyware on your computer. That stuff can really slow things down and cause problems too.
