If I had a Kubota and was given tan colored hats I'd go down to a fabric store and buy some orange dye and try to dye them. Don't know how close to Kubota orange you could get though. :) There must be a market opportunity here somewhere.

My fuel barrel and tractor are stored indoors 40-50F, fuel is winter diesel from Canada (Irving). I add Power Service to the tractor fuel tank, a water-separating filter won't necessarily remove water from treated fuel. I have a water adsorbing filter on the fuel hose. I did this kind of as a test, to see how good this 'winter diesel' was. Four 5 gal. plastic diesel containers left on the trailer outdoors for about 10 days, under a loose plastic tarp.I have had no problems running at -16F. My thoughts are that the wax crystals are like rock candy, unless the temp is quite high, dissolving the crystals takes a long time.

Load test the battery as Ken posted. What can happen in extreme cold circumstances is that the plates in the battery can warp and cause a dead short. This can happen to a new or older battery. The result is the starter does absolutely nothing; not even with jumper cables hooked up. The dead short disipates what ever charge is applied instantly. If you try to over charge the battery, it can explode under these circumstances so be CAREFUL. If you have a spare battery or jumper cables handy; try disconnecting the tractor battery completely and attempt another start using the spare battery or jumper cables ONLY. If it starts or cranks over, you most likely have a shorted battery. Good Luck!

Chief, I hope you like yours better than I do mine.

I bought mine with the tractor. For me, and I'm not a tall guy, (5' 11") the armrests set to low.

Hopefully yours will be better.

Before changing your timing, have a qualified automotive technician inspect your Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system for proper operation. EGR valve and/or EGR valve sensor failure is very common on this engine and is very easy for a qualified technician to inspect/repair. Note: if you retard the ignition timing you will possibly eliminate the symptom, but you will not correct the problem.

I just got my block heater kit in from the UPS man yesterday. Looks to me like a pretty simple install. These kits will fit the 4210 and up engines. Has anyone here intalled the kit on their tractor? How much anti-freeze did you loose when you took the engine plug out? I would appreciate and lessons learned/feedback on the install and performance.

If in fact you are having a current draw event; you may have a problem with the engine intake grid heater system. The problem could be in the ignition switch, a relay, etc. You may have even pushed the key switch in by accident. (highly unlikely) The intake heater grids on my Cummins severely draw the current/voltage down. (i.e. around 7 volts on start up) This is normal. Does not sound normal on your 4300 though. Just a thought on a theory.

That 5420 is a NICE tractor! Pretty much as Ken said. Build and equip the tractor the way you want it and figure in a 10 - 20% discount. They have a real nice cab for that series tractor as well. The 5540 is like the other "King of the Hill" tractors and JD tacks on a hefty price tag for 8 more hp.

I think that in general balers that roll the hay into a cylinder use less power than the square balers that have to cut and compress. I like the rolled bales because they tend to be more weather resistant. <br>

I do remember some of the old 1950 era square balers having a large flywheel on the PTO drive shaft at the front of the machine to help even out the surges in the driveline.

I respectfully disagree about the welding pressure settings. Acetylene and Oxygen should be set at the same low pressure in a welding torch. There are safety reasons for this that I addressed earlier in this thread. I agree with you about the check valves and I also spoke about that.

The check valves would likely keep you from having a problem with flashbacks in the first place, but you should still use equal pressure settings. It is also dangerous to suggest starting as low as you can and working your way up. Using too low a pressure is one of the things that can favor a flashback in the first place. I am sure that you have the experience to know when pressure is too low, but others may not be as experienced. I do agree with you that for most torches and tips that the 3-6 PSI range is a good start but anyone should follow the manufacturers recommendations if they are available.

I think every self respecting property owner who maintains his driveway needs an old bedspring for final grading and finishing. I mean from before the modern covered box springs where around. Pile some cement blocks on top and pull away. You can have fun keeping the blocks on top while they bounce around on the springs. All the small dips in the drive will fill in nicely. The nicest part about it is that all your neighbors will be jealous when you display it as a modern art masterpiece in the front yard.

Useful info from Leonard. It's also sort of discouraging. You pay premium price for a tractor you expect to last for decades and then the very well rewarded corporate types take over and do more acquisitions and mergers. The new company decides its good buz to cut the guts out of the products it acquired by scrapping parts support. Sort of makes paying a premium price for supposed durability seem sort of stupid.

There was some discussion about Mahindra acquiring some rights to Ford compacts awhile back and that may be a source of parts.

I think I'll run the part number through my NH dealer for my own info. If this type part isn't available then maybe it's time for a trade in for what I can get before I break something. If practice of 'parts obsoleting' is common by NH, Isure wouldn't buy another NH product though. I'd always wonder if I'd end up in the same situation 15 years later. I'll post again if my dealer turns up a part.

Art you are correct the steering does seem a little heavy and the ride a tick stiffer but to me thats a small price to pay for not haveing to deal with flats.thus far the extra weight really seems to help the torky lite weight machine.

Shuttle shift? I thought there was only hydrostatic or standard manual trans. Do you mean "double clutch"?
