Harvey, you mentioned that you now had a well designed blower compared to the cheap one you had before.

I'm probably going to be looking at 3 PT blowers for next winter so I was wondering what was your cheap one and what is your well designed one? I like to do alot of research and get alot of opinions if I can before I make such an investment whether new or used (as I'm sure most of us do). Thanks, Dave.

That is unfortunate and it sounds very expensive unless a used one can be found. It might be easier to find an entire used engine but that might be pretty pricey too. The web link below goes to a list of salvage yards that might be useful. The good thing is that 1720's are popular tractors and there may be a fair number of used parts around.<br>

I guess the journal was eaten beyond what turning it to an undersized bearing insert could repair. I have vague recollections of hearing that journals can sometimes be 'built up' and returned but I don't know if that's a realistic idea or how successful it might be.

That seems like a useful idea Murf. I know holding position with the 3ph isn't all that great with at least my hitch. The box tends to take the angle of the grade it's on irrespective of the side level adjustment. If I hold the high end off the ground with the 3ph, then the box doesn't follow the ground contour into dips or when the tractor's front wheels go over a bump. I recall hearing a discussion about some model JD where lateral float of the link arms could be selected on or off. Don't know if that's real but it would be useful for cutting side grades.

There is another thing about cutting side grades that may be obvious. Tilt on the blade needed to get a desired grade is the difference between the grade the tractor is on and the desired side-grade. The tractor's angle changes when the blade starts cutting behind one rear tire. The tilt may have to be changed. Some 'toing and froing' usually is needed. The tilt ends up level when both rear tires on the new grade.

Start as low as you can on pressure and work your way up.

For welding accetylene 3 to 6 psi NEVER EVER GO OVER 15 PSI
Oxygen 10 psi

Cutting
Accetylene 4 to 7 psi, oxygen 20 psi

These setting are for home/hobbyist torches

I doesn't take all that much pressure to get a desirable flame cone. Adjust accetylene to the proper cone length 3/8" to 5/8" in most cases, then slowly add and adjust oxygen to make the cone.

Always use check valves to protect your regulators

Years ago the cellar coal bin was very common, but cellars then were equipment space for the furnace. Hard coal has much less dust and odor than soft coal, but how either might affect the air-quality in a modern 'air tight' home is a question I can't answer. Storing only well seasoned wood in the cellar would eliminate your moisture problems and really reduce the annoying insects. Also makes the wood a lot lighter! As your sore back attests to, wood 'heats you three times'. I'm guessing that here in central Maine coal might be pricy, due to transportation costs and limited use. I'm considering an outbuilding for a wood heated hot water system, as oil/propane/electricity costs are very high and sure to increase. <br>
FYI: 1 ton of coal approximately equals 2 cords of dry wood for steam.<br>
Hard coal approximately 53# per cubic foot.<br>
Soft capproximately 48# per cubic foot.<br>

Some of the larger farm tractors are currently coming with not only engine block heaters but transmission heaters too. They also have what they call a cold start package which sends them in with an extra or a larger battery as well as either or a thermo start package. On the compacts I see no options for the block heaters out of the factory yet. Often jsut to put a charger on the battery to keep it at 100 percent during the cold is all that is needed to start them.

Not sure what to ask cause I don't know what it is worth. The local Yanmar man said he had one just like it for 3200.00. Sounds kind of steep to me but then again he is a dealer. Looks like a handy machine. Never owned one myself but it is clean. Alan

To simulate a tire mismatch you can do it on yourtractor now simply by adding extra air to the front and lowering your rear air pressure. When you do that then try and engage the front axle and disengage it after driving. See what you might have on a hard surface for power as you drive.

I think you will find that even though you have added weight that your foam filled tires can't flex like air filled tires to absorb the contours that a tire goes over as well. The added weight on the front will make the tractor steer harder. If you have enough in reserve to deal with the performance losses then this will probably work for you.

I agree to a point, in my case the price difference was 1400.00, to me that is a lot of money. I have found a local
dealer who has no problem providing service.
I still think Kubota needs to pay attention to their web page,It's sub par at best.

Well..on a more serious note..not dealing with beer and outhouses, I was an A&P (airframe & powerplant)(then it was A&E)(Aircraft & Engine) student at Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK from 1963-65. I learned that I'd rather fly airplanes than work on them and changed to the commercial flight school. Then..I retired in 1990 from 20 years as a cop in Anchorage. Nevermind..it's a long story.

One of the classes was aircraft welding. Back then, with aircraft, it was all gas..no electric. One of the last tests that we took was to join 2 pieces of 1/4" X 2" 4130 and then have the results put in a tension device to see where it broke. If it broke within 1" of the weld...you failed. All passing welds broke in the unaffected areas.

With aircraft, there's no margin for guesstomating error. Do it right or die.

So...what really is the welding issue here?? I don't care if you are an engineer or not, if it works..that's great. If it doesn't..back to the drawing board. BUT..if the issue could kill someone..then get really tight with the science and regulations and have your work triple checked by those that know.

BTW, Spartan had its own acetelene generator for its school until around the mid-50's. Then it blew...wiping out 10 sq. blocks. Maybe that furthered electro welding.

Horse guy My Uncle used his 1900 Ford 1 time that I remember but he tried with kicker wagon. The regular baler tractor broke on a Sunday afternoon and other tractors were tied up and only had 2 or so loads to go. He did ok on the flat but "ANY" kind of a slope up or down was not a good thing.

I think you will be fine. The bigger draw back is the plunger changing direction you will have a lot of surge with the small tractor unless you have a small baler like the ones used in the 50's and very early 60's.

Just start slow old cutting knives and tuff hay will kill your HP.

I will tell ypu one thing these 790's start right up in the cold. I had the tractor outside hooked to the manure cart and I got sick for afew days. The tractor ended sitting outside for a week with temps down to -5F. I started it at -5F with no block heater and it cranked right up like it was July. Now if only my truck was so happy about starting at those temps!

The tractor is back in the attached, but unheated garage where it stays around 30F. It is nice to know it will start right up under the worst of circumstances.

The Ford 1710 FWD was built by Shibaura. The closest Shibaura models do not use that part. If it is not available from Ford , your only other choice is used or to have one made. I don't think you'll find it as an off the shelf part.

I referenced a Jinma chipper earlier in this thread and finally bought one. It arrived this week but I can't use it yet because my hydraulic top link is too short for it. I'm going to modify it to fit the I-Match hitch which will solve the top-link issue. But that requires renting a trailer and hauling it to a welding shop. It's always something.

Anyway, first impressions are that it is a very simple design ruggedly built and easy to maintain. It has a mechanical feed roller that is pulled down into the wood by some strong springs. My only complaint so far on the design is that for thicker wood, maybe anything over 3", you have to pull a lever to raise the feed roller. It is awkwardly positioned and sort of twists the lower back when operating it. As designed it would be a two-person job to feed larger materials into the chipper. It appears that it would be easy to fabricate a foot pedal to operate the roller and I think I'll have that modification done as well.

Thanks for the help, found out today how to flash the unit by 110 ac source,took only five minute after you build the exciter, gen. now working, only ran unit for about 2 minutes this morning and this afternoon it would not work again, then i did the process again and ran the unit for about five minutes and its still holding, will try again tommorrow to see if it retained its charge.

Thanks for the responses. Talked to him tonight and he definitely wants the flat tops. Just don't know how much he is willing to spend because he's kind of tight. I gave him those sights and I'll keep poking around.

Congrats, I only have a few hours on my TC 33HST so far ( Been to DARN Cold!!! to do anything outside ) but I can tell you how much it has already helped out. I didn't think of some of the things I would use it for that I already have. It is a nice litte Machine... Again Congratulations
