Excellent analogy AC5ZO! Couldn't have said it better myself. Welding How-To books are much cheaper than a fire or injury from improperly adjusted regulators.

One more piese of advise: I like to have my regulators professionally cleaned and inspected every year. Lack of use is harder on them than constant use. One blown regulator will teach many lessons.

Richard, One more option to look at if you're interested in price is a used tiller. Just about all the used Yanmar and Iseki tractors from Japan seem to come with tillers. I guess the farmers all use them there. One place near here that sells these tractors had a bunch of tillers outside. I'm sure they could be had for a good price. They could be well worn out though too...

Been looking for small skid, track or articulated loader, preferably about 36" wide to fit pathways. Bobcat 463s seem pretty rare used, and 453s tend to be beat up. NH LS-125 also hard to find. Not sure I can afford a new one.<br>

Then there's this Gehl Advantage. I like the boom arrangement, but hven't actually found a dealer with one on the floor to try driving it. Seems like the wheel arrangement should cause no more lawn damage than a track loader, maybe even less. <br>

Anybody here tried one? I need to do usual loading tasks, plus plunge-digging to relocate trees & shrubs. Probably can't afford a separate backhoe, so needs to have some oomph.<br>

I took the cover off of the gearbox and discovered that the PTO gear selector shafts were somehow jambed by the ball on the bottom of the gear shift lever. Opening the cover solved the problem. The detents in the selector shafts are squared and apparently can easily become jambed by the lever if they are in a particular alignment.
Easy fix, though it might become a pain if it happens often.

Billy is right. The package I bought had all I-Match compatible implements and it is a breeze to swap between them.

It can be a challenge to find I-match implements though. When I looked for rear pallet forks I spoke to Rankin and ended up paying them an extra $30 for I-Match forks. When they arrived they didn't work and I found that Rankin never even tried them. Needless to say, those are being returned and I'm getting some forks from Rears manufacturing that they guarantee will work. I think it's worth the extra hassle up front to simplify swapping down the road but everyone needs to make their own choices. I can't imagine my wife working a pry bar to swap implements.

Richard, actually I am still out in MN :( Damn cold here!! and can't complete my registration to the new CTOA board :( So all I can do is browse, but not reply. Needed a "reply" fix :)

I've got a 48 hoe on my 4700. It is so much heavier than earlier CUT hoes ie; 955 with a 3X? hoe. I've dug in winter and the biggest obstacle has been breaking through the frost. With a 4310 the ground breaking force will be even less than my 4700 (weight) so my feeling is if you can get through the frost it will be OK. I think the hoe will bounce off the frozen ground long before you hurt it. But if it "feels" like it's rough on it then it prob is. Best thing to extend the life of your 47 is to keep it WELL greased.<br>

You have a good point about getting too wide, especially when your trying to push about 6-12" of wet snow. Most tractors are about 53-55" wide. A 60" wide blade works ok for a straight push but is a little narrow when tilting. I use a 72" wide blade but keep the tilt somewhat shallow. With heavy, wet snow falls it packs while being pushed and picks up stones from the driveway. You can see the snowpack several feet in front of the blade. I always keep the shoes projecting about 2" below the blade and attempt to keep the shoes just slightly off the surface. When you hit a large drift, the extra force tries to push down causing the shoes to dig and rip up the drive or grass. I then back drag with an FEL with the tip about 20 tilt. I have my drives set-up with large turn arounds and drag and push this snow into piles there. It is usually contaminated with stone. When it melts, it isn't on the lawn. Paved drives don't have that issue but I can't afford several 500' blacktops.

My setup was about $2300 incl. about $500 for the quick-tach & PTO. The two are really two different tools and not always interchangable, especially if you are working on a gravel drive. A front plow on a 2210 can't push very high and a blower dosen't scrape as well. I ended up with a rear blade and front blower on my 2210. May still sell the blower (and get a broom, good year round) because I have a plow truck and a bigger tractor. Let me know if you are interested in the blower.

If it is a relatively small job, using a single beam subsoiler is the cheapest approach while getting hours on the CUT. If it is a large project or needs to get done fast than going to get help is the best. It is always good to get pricing estimates and then do it yourself. That way you can tell mama how much the tractor is saving you by having it and what a good purchase it was.

Mark, the usual length for a splitter cylinder is 24", however depending on the size of wood you are cutting you can normally get away just fine with a 16" cylinder for 12" or slightly larger wood.

All lengths are TRAVEL measurements, not overall lengths.

As for diameter, that is one of two components that determine both the speed at which it will cycle, and also the force it will develop.

If you are going to make this splitter as an experiment, as sort of ver. 1.0 model, then use almost any pump & motor you can find. If this is a one shot deal, do yourself a favour and go with a good power source. A new 9-11hp motor and a TWO stage pump. If you have access to a reasonably priced machine shop you can use an old PTO-driven pump from a dump truck in the wreckers. They are both high-pressure and high-volume units, in fact a lot of big self-built commercial splitters around here are powered by a 4 cyl. car engine driving a dump truck pump. The fuel tank from the same truck usually makes a perfect reservoir.

The best way to find a local source for parts is to phone either a big hydraulics shop, or a NEW equipment dealer. They will know ALL the good sources for parts locally.

The simple explanation: Position control hitches have a numbered scale and repeatable settings.

If, for instance, you determine that your rear blade is just touching the ground when your hitch is set at 4.25.... Then every time you reset at 4.25 it will return to the same vertical position.

Other, less expensive, hitches have three settings: up, down and stop. So if you want that blade to just skim the surface then you have to swivel around and eyeball it each time you drop it to get the setting you want.

I can't see that there's a problem unless the hitch runs out of range when starting up a steep hill or when an implement is on a high bump. Top-link bracket height is a part of the CAT I hitch standard and CAT I implements are built with corresponding top-link mount heights. CAT I implements used with CAT I hitches should produce the best geometry.

Poor geometry may result in appreciable changes in tilt as an implement follows the ground contour. That may not be critical for many implements but may be undesirable for scrapers and blades. Shortening the top-link for tractors that have short lower-links shouldn't affect the geometry much.

I would definitely have to agree with shortmagnum's last comment. I have made a pretty good mess of a rather large area trying to get some small locus stumps out. But a +/-16" pine stump that had an assist from Isabel came right out.

Grinder had some good points in the linked post on a similar subject. I think my philosophy will be give it one or two easy test pushes and if it looks solid, leave for a stump grinder, or just leave it.

I saw a photo of a historical stump puller. Basically a really big wheel, turning a small shaft used as a winch, mounted above the stump on a portable frame that lifted the stump straight up after they got a rope under it. I'd love to adapt that concept to a pto powered, portable rig.

Thanks for the information. It is very difficult to find anything out on the terra-plane. I just found out that he ordered the terra-plane with frontend loader and backhoe today. Just FYI, i have a 790 jd that i really enjoy. I have a good friend that is the head of the jd service department that is 27 miles from us. Thanks again.

My preference is for the ehydro transmission. Has the most versatility IMO. In your neck of the woods; get the engine block heater AND the transmission oil heater. You are going to have to make the call on tires. R-4's are a pretty good compromise between turfs and ag tires but the R-4 can still mark up the lawn if it is wet or soggy. Turfs and chains is winter may work best. Not sure what would work best in your particular application. I would strongly recoommend the dual front facing and rear facing light kits. They are great for dusk and after dark. In your case, you will need them to see around the snow blower if need be. Maybe a spare set of blades for the MMM so you can rotate them. The Tricycler Mulching Kit is PRICEY but it is a matter of opinion if it is worth it. Maybe an armrest kit. I suggest you demo BEFORE buying.
