Detroit Diesel makes a V6 diesel in the size range Ford needs but I think Daimler/Chrysler has Ford over a barrel as they recently purchased Detroit diesel and have indicated to Cummins that they did like the idea of Cummins providing an engine to a direct comptetitor. All that leaves Ford is Yanmar, Steyr, MAN, and Caterpillar. I think the Cat 3126B would be a good choice for Ford. This is Ford's own fault as they have stuck with International which has produced marjinal to poor engines for them.

Those SHO's were peppy for a four door weren't they. If it is in good running shape, you may as well keep it especially if the wife likes it. Taurus's have horrible resale value. My wife's 95 LX is not worth $3000. If you really want to get the best benefit and longest life out of the engine; try installing a bypass filter.

Now that I know my tractor is on the way, the list of projects from my Wife is growing. One thing she would like done is to put in a walk from the back deck to the walk out basement and also to the barn. I had looked at the 18" square molds that you can purchase and then use quick set concrete in. It is molded to look like stones. Has anyone used these before? If so, how well did they work, were you satisfied with the end result? Does it hold up to foot and lawn mower ( soon tractor ) traffic? Meaning if I lay down a base of stone and then set the molds. After all has set up, will it handle being driven over as I cut the lawn on both sides? Any feedback on these would be appreciated. Thanks

We'll be upgrading from a 3-year old VISA points camera to this year's VISA points camera. This stuff is changing so fast that I can't see spending real money on something I like until the rate of obsolescence slows down a bit.

This year's VISA camera is a Finepic 3.1 mp with a 10X optical zoom. I noticed that popular current models tend to have 8x opticals with 2x digital zooms. Think I've got that one figured out. Digital zoom enables a person to crop a pic and blow up it up but the resolution is degraded. I think that an 8x optical plus 2x digital is 16x, and the resolution likely is degraded from 5mp to 2.5. I think that camera would have higher resolution at 10X that the 3.1 mp Finepic using a 10X optical zoom--have to keep in mind here that some pix ratings are not real physical pix. I'm guessing it's cheaper to maintain image quality with more pix than with longer opticals. However, having a digital zoom on a camera is not too relevant. They do the same thing as a graphics editor and maybe a good editor does it better.

I think used loaders are pretty rare. Once they're on a tractor they tend to stay, and the frames tend to be fairly specific to a tractor. My loader is an Allied 195 for my 24hp Ford. I think Allied's are moderate-cost medium-duty loaders. The hydraulics are after-market components.

Loader and box scraper tend to be very common configurations. My box is almost always on in the summer since that's the easiest way for me to get enough ballast for loader work. I use the scraper quite a bit anyway and I don't mow. Anyway, you probably don't want a back-hoe without a loader and the two together would be expensive.

I have a 60" Befco Boxblade and was very impressed with the quality and how heavy duty it was. My Kubota dealer sells both Woods and Befco implements and said they were pretty much the same as far as quality but they used Befco more because the orange Befco uses matches the Kubota tractor better.

I have the 1/4 inching valve on my 7800 and I love it. It is really easy to use and get the hang up it. So far I have just used it when box blading.

Many fittings and couplers leak a bit. Some people want to fix them and some don't. I'm pretty tolerant to small leaks myself.

For repairs, couplers have o-rings that are usually fairly easy to replace. Tape or liquid seal can be used on fittings (but only apply it to the upper third of threads). This stuff should be needed if fittings are in good shape--so use should be optional. The cause of a leaky fitting is more often the threads or seats rather than the tightness. There are torque values for tightening fittings and over-tightening them can make them leak worse.

I found that the easiest way for me to get them back on is to use a drift to line up the holes. The pins on my loader have square ends. Supporting the cylinder while trying to line up the holes and start the pin wasn't working very well. It was an upper arm pin and the bucket was still attached but blocked.

None of my drifts were right but a 3pn pin worked OK. Put the 3ph pin in from one side to line it up, start the loader pin from the other and push out 3ph pin. Whallah and there it was. Good thing too it was cold, starting to get dark and my frustration level was climbing.

Everything I've heard says Yanmars are good tractors and I haven't heard of any characteristic problem. Yanmar does have a small dealer network in N.A. so support is available. However, there are gray Yanmars and N/A. Yanmars and I think dealers can't work on or supply parts for the grays. It might be good to figure out if the tractor is a gray or not. A dealer probably can identify a N.A. tractor from the part number. If it's a gray, getting a repair manual so an independent can work on it and finding parts sources also might be good.

If you don't have an owner's manual there may be several mystery controls. Many Yanmars have a compression release and a creeper gear--neither of which are very common in NA. It may have a pre-heat system that uses small amounts of fuel. A small plastic jug in the engine compartment would supply the system.

I just purchased a Silverado 2500HD with a Meyers C-8 snow plow and MDII quick connect frame. The frame seems to be dangerously close to the ground (2-3 inches). Does anyone know if this is OK? I'm thinking of changing out the 16" wheels/tires to the 17" ones that come on the Z71 model (which I traded in - loved those big tires!)to try to gain a little ground clearance. Thoughts?

Most people like bucket width to cover the tire tracks. You can have one built or ifyou have the QT any skid loader one would work.

I've considered that engine the small block Chevy of diesels since it was introduced. It is not any wheres near as easy to work on a chevy for modifications but what it can do out of the box is awsome. 359 cubic inches and factory rated to more than 300 horsepower. Torque band is near flat and low at the 300 but that still says a lot!

Ken: Anything you turn up would be interesting. The throttle valve idea is something I've run across several times, although not in books. The discussions were among people who I believe knew what they were talking about. I believe it's true that diesels won't come up to operating temp at slow idles and they'll even cool down below operating temp given prolonged slow idles. I don't know if the same is true for turbo-charged engines.

The idea seems right in so far as the volume of air moving through an engine that had a closed throttle plate would have lower density and therefore lower thermal mass than one with an open manifold (at the same displacement and rpm). That much seems true, and diesels do have low intake manifold vacuums at low loads. Whether this is the effect that causes diesels to need some rpm to warm up on cold days isn't as evident. Interesting to think about though.

The tractor is in southern NM at 9000 feet elevation. Yearly snowfall of about 80 inches. Why would the chains make it drift more?

I added a top link to my compact tractor. It works great for the snowblower and for the wood chipper. My drive is gravel so I start the season with the blower tilted up and as the snow packs and freezes I tilt to be more aggressive.<br>
As for the chipping the bush is never the same pitch and the chipper needs to be level. It also helps to clear the ground when moving over hills as I can tilt it up high.<br>

I used a cyl. From TSC and welded a turn buckle eye to the end of the shaft. I think the cyl was 8" by 2"<br>

As others have posted I would not be without one now however the first cost to set up is high. It helps if you can do it yourself.<br>
