I haven't got enough seat time to tell you where it should be running. Gauges normally do not have one place they should run as they seem to run in different places depending on the sending units used and the gauge. It is wise to watch your gauges and know where they normally read. Unless you were brushogging or doing something more consistant then loader work it very well was where it might normally run under those conditions.

I prefer the commercial saws for performance. There is a difference in the torque and normally the rpms that they run at and they are normally lighter. DO not put to big of a bar on as it will hinder the power of the saw it is normally better to make two cuts if in big wood.

Russ, where I live in NY we have average snowfalls often exceeding 150 to 180 inches a year. The snow here does blow a lot and I've found that a loader leaves higher banks to clear. With a blower I don't have the banks which means I don't have to have bigger equipment come in in the month of February to move the snow back further to give me more room for more snowfalls. The driveway is always neater as the squared banks normally never get over a couple of foot deep and I don't have big banks on the end of the driveway to look around when entering the street. I'm going to try a blade with the end plates to quicken the gathering of the near daily snow falls and then blowing the piles away. When the blower has not had a good cutting edge to cut down to the blacktop it has been handy to have the loader bucket to scrape it with. By having a good cutting edge on the blower I've normally been able to handle the job with that. I had a manual crank three point this past year and I still have a crink in my neck from constantly turning around to see where I'm at, the tractor I used did have a shuttle but not independent PTO so it meant having to shuttle at higher rpm's then I liked so I had problems with keeping the spout clear. When doing this if I was using a hydro I could have eased into the banks and neatly blown them away. I would recommend a hydraulic rotation on the three point blower you do use if that is your choice and if you are in crowded areas you might want to have a powered deflector. You should also add the extra valve to your tractor to run the rotation.

I am starting to build a home on 5 acres of land, 4 of which is cleared with some hardwood trees. I live in South Louisiana so the property is essentially flat. Snow will not be an issue and the tractor will be used primarily to cut grass, skid an occasional tree and possibly use a blade on my 250' of gravel drive way. I intend to have a lawn and will be cutting grass once a week. I am looking at both Kubota and John Deere with MMM. A few questions I have are as follows: How nice of a cut do you get with a 60" MMM? Would the JD 4110 with 20hp (17PTO) be adequate for my needs or should I move up to around 25hp? Would it be better to get the 4WD or move up to say a JD790 (2WD) with more hp? Many people seem to like the Hydro Tranny given my needs would that be the way to go. It appears the JD790 has narrower tires than the 4110 would these have a tendency to cause ruts in the lawn? My main concern is I do not want to be underpowered. I do not want to pay for more than I need but I will have to live with this purchase for some time. I guess I am really confused about the 4WD versus 2WD issue. My knowlegde regarding tractors is virtually nothing. Therefore any advice, comments, recommendations would be appreciated. Ken: I guess I was hoping to come up with an explanation that makes sense to me. I think codes applied to backup generators are a fairly new experience and there aren't specific codes yet. Sounds like you got hit with the most restrictive interpretation possible and that's too bad. To me it makes no sense to apply codes intended for permanent continuously equipment that's suppose to last 40 years or so in service to emergency backup equipment. Even so peak loads aren't used for many circuits to calculate requirements.

There's a good chance it's not really the inspector who may be working under policies that also don't make a lot of sense. The shotgun litigation fashion has caused many public agencies to adopt some really nutty policies. Whatever the reason I guess it doesn't do you much good now and that's too bad.

Billy: An inspector told me once that most inspectors wouldn't intentionally look at equipment except what's on the permit. He did say that if he saw anything really dangerous then he'd have to do his job, but it's to my interest that he does his job. I agree with that but there aren't any guarantees. I'm lucky I've had only good experiences I guess.

KA: My inspectors gave me the same break on inspection costs they give contractors. They have enough confidence in what I do so that they don't necessarily look at everything or make detailed inspections for both the rough and finished wiring. If there are additions between the rough plan and the finished wiring they sign off on the permit anyway. That's probably the reason for the differences in cost. It's sort of self-defeating if nutty policies and nutty costs cause everybody in their right minds to avoid inspections like the plague. I've seen a bunch of really scary amateur work.

The house sits 200' from the road so I am interested in establishing, say about a 200 x 200 area in front of the house which will resemble a finished lawn. The property is located in a very rural area ( 200 acre farm across road, 83 acres next to me) so it doesnt have to be "putting green" quality or like a suburban lawn, just some consistent green grass void of a majority of weeds.<br>

Immediately in front of the house of course will be any fill the home builder has left that he will hopefully rough grade. Beyond that to the road will be the current mix of grasses and weeds that have been brush hogged and mowed down close for the winter.<br>

What I want to know is how to prepare this area for seeding. What implements should I consider buying for the tractor, backblade? tiller? And what process and in what order should I perform the tasks in order to establish the tasks.<br>

I am considering buying a NH TC 29 or the new Farmall DX 29 if that helps. (with FEL) Is this a large enough tractor to do this work?<br>

Also, is there any landscapers out there that could estimate what it would cost to put this size of a lawn in if I decided to contract a professional landscaper? I am trying to compare the cost vs the implement cost in order to justify their purchase.<br>

My 1979 JD 314 has a 14hp Kohler engine and it is ready for a rebuild. Has anyone out there swapped this engine out for a larger one? I've seen some pictures where folks have put different engines in 300s, 317s, and 318s.<br>

That's a good price for a tractor with loader & mower. A new loader lists for $3000 & a cheap mower would be $500 or more.

my house is high enough that adding material to the low spots wouldn't matter. I was just trying to see if there was an easier way of taking care of my crawdad buddies.

The suggestion to see if the county would give me their byproduct material is something i'll need to look into. If that worked out it would be a match made in heaven. Another guy i talked to said to see if the swimming pool companies would dump their dirt at my place instead of wherever they go now.

I've hauled mine (BX2230 + FEL)around several times with my 18' car hauler. It would never work in a smaller trailer. My trailer is rated for 8000# with tandem axles both with brakes. I'm a bit of a heavy duty nut so I wouldn't think of anything smaller for a 2000# + tractor. My motto is take the weight of your load and double it for the needed trailer.

BTW towing duties go to a 94 Cummins Dodge 2500 4x4. I don't care what anyone says, any 1/2 ton pick-up is nothing more than a full-sized car with a big open trunk.

A good friend of mine has a 1455 and loves it, he does commercial work such as dirt, landscape, etc. he has never had any problems with his tractor. he buys a new tractor every three years. he is hard on his equipment and puts them to the test, he will not buy anything else but massey ferguson. i spent 2 weeks operating his 1455 and i am purchasing mine soon. i currently have an international 706 and a smaller john deer. i am very impressed with the 1455

It's amazing as to why people do what they do. We had a fellow who bought a 2910 it did have a problem, never told us! Went to the Deere dealer bought a new deere after they told him how bad the bota's are, they wouldn't even consider taking the bota in, his freinds told one of our guys to give him a call, we did fixed it, now he's wondering how to trade both off, he still prefers the bota thank you, but thinks we want both and he just wants a new 2910? GO figure!
