To have a problem once with a cylinder on a loader is unusual for lite work much less heavy. To have it happen twice, something is wrong with this picture. I'd be looking for marks on the cylinder ram!

I look at E-bay from time-to-time and was surprised to come across this ad for Kubota compact tractors keys. Seller claims they fit many of Kubota's tractors. How unique are keys for a given tractor? If this is real (what next?), I guess it's time to buy a "Denver boot" for our tractors, eh?

Thus far it seems that the appropriate JOhn Deere model is a 5105 with 4wd that runs about $23,500. I've not checked whether this includes loader. I do know that the Kubota M4900 with loader is $23,500. I'll continue to do my homework. thanks guys. very informative and enjoyable discussion.

I am in a similar position Osheen, and had a similar thought. Then I realized this forum is probably better than any printed mag. Up to the minute discussions on any brand of tractor/implement; dang-near immediate feedback & suggestions on problems; lotsa great reviews by real users. And humor to boot! All at a VERY reasonable price!! How could any printed magazine compete with that?

First line of caution is to try and keep some forward visibility. All to often the strongest design lends to other complications of the operation.

My tractor with loader and an implement would go around 4,000 lbs--got to figure fuel and any ballast as well. I decided against trying to trailer it with my highway 1/2 even for short flat distances. I might consider it if I had a tow package or 4wd with its lower gearing as well as a tandem axle trailer with brakes on both axles. Still with that weight there's a good chance that the trailer could out-muscle most any 1/2-ton if the trailer wheels loose traction during emergency maneuvering. Around here Transport makes you pay for any guard rails taken out etc. I drive tractor 10 miles along highway shoulders to our camp when I have to.<br>

You really need a trailer long enough to adjust the tongue weight by moving the tractor and also long enough to sit the loader and hoe bucket on the deck. Hoes especially can break things if they aren't sat down due to high load shocks at highway speeds. Hoe buckets regularly drag when going up or down ramps. Be careful because you can break a hoe pretty easily when the boom is locked. Sound like you're real happy about the tractor and I hope the Board will be helpful to you.

Quick hitches are a verry usefull item on a tractor IF you are going to be changing impliments quite often...as in several times a day, or if you are not capable of moving the impliment a few inches with a board. (I use a 3"x3"x4' stick of oak)The drawback on using a quick hitch is this.
1. all impliment HAVE to be duilt or modified to fit the
quick hitch.
2. The drive shafts (pto driven impliments) may or may not be long enough to be
able to reach the few extra inches required.

There is no doubt about it, A quick hitch is a labor saving device if you are riged up to use it.

Generally I confine my blab to here. That way more people can contribute or tell me I don't know what I'm talking about if that's the case.

I imagine some things are made for your tractor. In practice garden tractors don't weigh enough for serious digging work. A hoe of any power can really move even fairly heavy compacts around or pull them into the hole. Hoe equipped tractors are supposed to also be loader equipped for safety reasons. Small hoes also don't have the depth or reach needed for many jobs. You get to the point where what really needs to be done can't be due to limitations of the equipment or just that a shovel ends up being faster--probably not as fun though.

I have a 3ph hoe that's worked fine for my occasional fairly light work over five years. They do stress a tractor more than sub-frame mounts and some tractors tolerate it better than others. Your dealer's sense of your budget and intended use probably is the reason he's boosting a 3ph hoe. They tend to be quite a bit cheaper but they also can break a tractor--as can a sub-frame hoe if it's not used properly.

Dang! Sorry to hear that and I guess it's the exception that defies the 'no news is good stuff.' I guess it's a good reason why we haven't heard about the outcome.

I haven't been through one of these horror stories in a long while but I've been through enough of them so I just don't tear things down anymore unless I can't avoid it. Sympathies from here, and not much to be thankful for in the tractor world I guess. Although I can keep myself from tearing down tractors most times, I'm not so successful with Windows operating systems and I have a stock of horror stories from my fixing the computer system efforts. Just happy the tractor's been reliable. Hang in there!

It sure wouldn't take long to burn up a clutch if the shear pin didn't break and the mower was stopped.

I'd sure check out what shear pin is supposed to be used in the cutter and also that the cuter isn't oversized for the tractor. Shear pins usually go with the implement rather than the tractor. You can find almost any grade used but grade-2 is the most common--especially if it's around a 5/16" size. The times I've broken pins on my blower or auger, they've broken cleanly. I have heard that the pinholes can get egg-shaped on units where pins are broken repeatedly and then the pins may not break cleanly. I've also heard that loose or corroded pins can do the same. However, all this after the fact stuff doesn't do much good for now. Good chance it's the clutch and that's pretty painful and not good to hear.

It's not uncommon for a shaft or coupler to be broken and the output still rotate under very light loads. It's the sort of thing that can complicate diagnosing broken axles. The tractor will move in 4wd but not in 2wd and each rear wheel seems powered when jacked up. My auger does the same. The first time I broke a shear I though I had blown the pto clutch.

Hi Chris: That's a good description and sorry you're having trouble. I'm going to take a different tack here and say that maybe theorizing around here may not be that useful even if we identify the problem. The dealer still has to do the work under warranty and the factory has to be convinced it's a problem. So the problem may be more how to convince the dealer to take the problem forward. If I understand correctly, dealers shouldn't care because it's warranty work for them but the factory rep has to agree to a claim.

Documenting the problem seems like a good idea and at this point it sounds like the entire HST should be replaced if the problem can't be found. I've heard of that happening. If the dealer is fairly close maybe an appointment could be made and the tractor driven there so it's warm when tested. Maybe a video could be shot. Don't know but getting the dealer on board seems like the solution.

If I were theorizing, I'd start off figuring how a hydraulic system handles the problem of reversing without a controller and that might point toward what the controller isn't doing. It basically sounds like something is emptying out and then getting hit with pressure after it refills. Could be cavitation or actual fluid loss. Could be plain old pressure regulation and I don't know how it's regulated. I might also think about something outside system control--the pump itself for example. Most of all I'd try to reason why the problem becomes worse after it's warm. Don't know if this sort of stuff is helpful. It's just early morning thinking from a gear-head.

I'm looking at both the NH TC29 and the Case DX29. Never owned a tractor so I am new to this, when actually do the model years run? Are they like cars when a majority of the new models are introduced the fall before??

I was at our local Case dealer and he had no compact tractors on the lot, rather vague but he inferred that the new line was coming out next year. He only had a 1 page spec sheet that had a little story about the McCormick-Farmall heritage.

He said he'd have a 35 & 29 probably in Feburary. Is this right? These Farmall tractors are not even out on the market yet? Or did he just not have one because he is a small dealer?

He quoted me a rough price which was about $1000 less than the comparable NH, curious how it measures upmechanically and feature wise.

If you raise the loader up high and try to push the tree over, be careful!! The tree wouldn't go over ( 8" oak ), my L3300 started climbing the tree, I was falling back in the seat and couldn't press the cluth so I yanked it out of gear at what was probably seconds from flipping. After that close call I will rent the dozer again.

I have a friend who owns a 70+ acre horse boarding facility. They had such a tractor and pretty much worked it to its limits when hauling a large water tank for the race track. It's crankshaft failed a while back. He questions whether the quality of steel that went into it is as good as it might have been if it was made over here. He also wonders if it was maintained properly before he bought the place. He didn't fix it. He bought an orange equivalent instead. He says it doesn't seem to know the water tank is being pulled behind it. He doesn't sound down on the old tractor as much as he is up on the new one. But, he didn't want to invest heavily in the old one's repair in case it had an inherent quality problem that would still be present after it is fixed.

I understand what you're going through we have visitors but they don't stay. I have several cats who visit. The one cat we "adopted" stays in the barn, he is very territorial so the visitors don't stay for long. It works out.<br>

As far as dogs they avoid my bulldog for some reason. Too ugly or smelly I suppose :) It must be something with my dog because the neighbors have dog and bear visits to there garbage regularly but I have no problems. The grabage is right next toit eh dog pen, amybe the don't wnat to go there????<br>

I don't know about this model but many Yanmars have direct injection engines. They'd use manifold pre-heaters rather than glow plugs. However, operation of plugs or pre-heaters is about the same from an operator's perspective. The tips about glow plug checking are what I'd do as well. My system does have a glow wire indicator on the dash. If the indicator is burnt out the plugs won't work. There's an archive discussion. Mine is a manual system that depends on me knowing how long to use the glow plugs. Automatic systems may fail, which could be the problem.

There was an unusual system mentioned while back about some model of Yanmar. The system drips fuel onto a heated element. There is a small tank for this fuel and it doesn't fill itself on some models. It's possible such a tank is out of fuel.

If your Yanmar has a compression release, that too can be used to help cold whether starts. Basically, with minimum throttle, release the compression, spin the starter, increase the throttle and put compression back on. The procedure allows the starter to turn faster and also can bring the oil pressure up before the engine fires.

The first thing I'd say is to check with an electrical supplier that sells to contractors or your utility to find out what type units are approved. The equipment on the site you mentioned may well be fine, but just because something is UL approved doesn't mean a particular utility accepts it. An electrical supplier won't guarantee what they sell will pass inspection but what they handle ordinarily is approved for use in there area and they know what contractors buy.

To make sure were talking the same thing, when I say generator panel, I mean something that is wired as a branch circuit on a service panel. The entire service does not pass through such a panel, and that's what I have. When I say transfer panel I mean a unit that is installed in the service line and the entire service load flows through the unit. The site you mention may not use the same terminology. The site does seem to contain some hybrids of these two types. The automatic start type that manages the load seems interesting.

There are advantages to each type. In general, transfer switches feed the entire service panel and they do not disturb existing branch circuit wiring, but most people won't have a generator large enough to carry the entire normal load. The load must be managed by selectively turning off breakers. Installation of transfer switches ordinarily require a temporary service disconnect by the utility. Instillation can be messy for an underground service where the feed from the meter base goes into the back of a combination service panel. The choice can be either moving the panel or the meter.

Generator panels operate as a branch circuit and may provide up to 125A and more than 20 branch circuits. However, installing them does require moving circuits from the service to the generator panel and some lines almost always must be spliced and lengthened. My 60A -generator panel provides 20 circuits and was less expensive than a 200A transfer switch, but prices may have changed since backup power became more popular.
