when I go to start the 1610d & turn key to TS, I get no kind of knowing if the glow plugs are hot & ready to start. Just bought the tractor in October & live is central Texas. When it was warm weather, would start just find, but now, with cooler weather, it's getting hard to start.

Does your owners manual have any info? It should tell you to hold the key in the glow plug position for a period of time (colder it is the longer you should pre-warm). If it doesn't start, then repeat. Usually 10-15 sec would work on my older tractor, but my new one only requires 2-3 sec if the temp is >0 Deg. Also, the new one has a panel indicator to show the glow plug circuit is energized. The older tractor doesn't show anything. ....

First things first. Check each glow plug to be sure they are not burned out. An ohm meter will tell you whithout doing anything but unplugging them what the resistance is between the center contact and ground. Each one should be roughly the same resistance, and none should be an open circuit or a dead short. They are basically heavy duty light bulb elements.
If they all check OK, then next check that they are getting 12 volts.
If both above are OK, then just cycle them for 5 to 10 seconds prior to cranking.
No diesel should require any pre-heat at temperatures above freezing, but it will help at temperatures below about 50 degrees.
Your machine may need the injectors done. Often they get worn or springs weaken and they don't like to start. A weak battery or starter motor will also not help any.

I don't know about this model but many Yanmars have direct injection engines. They'd use manifold pre-heaters rather than glow plugs. However, operation of plugs or pre-heaters is about the same from an operator's perspective. The tips about glow plug checking are what I'd do as well. My system does have a glow wire indicator on the dash. If the indicator is burnt out the plugs won't work. There's an archive discussion. Mine is a manual system that depends on me knowing how long to use the glow plugs. Automatic systems may fail, which could be the problem.
There was an unusual system mentioned while back about some model of Yanmar. The system drips fuel onto a heated element. There is a small tank for this fuel and it doesn't fill itself on some models. It's possible such a tank is out of fuel.
If your Yanmar has a compression release, that too can be used to help cold whether starts. Basically, with minimum throttle, release the compression, spin the starter, increase the throttle and put compression back on. The procedure allows the starter to turn faster and also can bring the oil pressure up before the engine fires. ....

The YM1610 doesn't have glow plugs, it has a thermostart system. Remove the air intake hose and you can see the thermostart plug down in the intake, turn the key to the left and time how long it takes for the plug to get red, should take 10-15 sec. replace hose and try it out.
