Finally got it to finish downloading. It looks like it works smooth enough in the video. I have a big question with repect to safety and what would happen if the log created enough resistance to spin around and knock the truck off the jacks or hit the operator. A vehicle with a limited slip differential would have to have both rear wheels jacked up. Hey...... you could run dual Sticklers! ;-) If you jacked up only one side of the axle with an open differential, I am not sure if the spider gears were designed to operate in that manner for extended periods of time. Looks like a neat idea though. If it works as good as in the video on stubborn stuff, not a bad log splitter for under $300.

Wildman, I think the 4110/4115 offer a folding ROPS as an option.

grinder, if you want John Deere and a backhoe I think you'd need to move up to the 790 with the 8B backhoe or the 4115 with the 46 backhoe. The 46 is a new model and they haven't updated their website so I'm not sure what models it fits. I know it fits the 4115 since Mark Hunstiger here has that setup. But you're not gonna get a 4115 with loader, backhoe, snowblower and mmm for $16000. The MSRP on a 4115 is $15999 and that's without any attachments. If you don't mind shifting your own gears the 4WD 790 is about $4k cheaper. The biggest criticism of the 790 seems to be it's dry brakes but it's a pretty solid machine.

I'll have to look at the bolts again but I don't remember any grade markings on the head. It seems like they had an "M" in the center. I believe they are 12mm bolts (19mm heads) but as I mentioned before they aren't a standard bolt. I'll look tonight and give you more details. I may even try to post a picture if I'm feeling adventurous. I would like to find shop manuals for this tractor. Any suggestions? Again, thanks for your help.

Widman, seriously look at putting down CaCl (Calcium Chloride) which is readily available EVERYWHERE since it is a very common de-icing solution.

One big advantage to CaCl is that it is available in both liquid solution and anhydrous (pellets or flakes) form. This means you can lay it down with anything from a shovel to a regular fertilizer spreader, hand-held, walk-behind, tow-behind or 3pth type. Or recuit anyone with a pickup truck mounted salter, they work great. After application of flakes or pellets either wet it down or wait for rain or snow to do it for you.

The other nice thing about CaCl is that it doesn't really affect your ability to work with the surface material, you can re-grade it to your hearts content and it binds everything right back up again. It is also easy to 'top up' the amount of solution in the surface by periodically adding more, this is what they do with gravel roads around here, after a few years of repeated applications it takes VERY little to bring the surface to a very hard crust with no dust of any consequence.

I guess the other question I should have asked was.......does it make better sense to use separate impliments to do with the Plot Master does? I have looked at the more traditional farm/ag impliments but nobody I have looked at yet makes a combo impliment such as this.

I am not up so much on my combines but I will take a stab at this. Assuming there are not other mechanical issues contributing to the cotter pin breakage; are you using the John Deere spec. cotter key or a replacement cotter key?

The reason I ask is that perhaps the cotter key you are currently using is not of the correct hardness or compatible material. Aside from this, without more info. on exactly what is taking place is not too clear.

Usually with repetative breakage such as this there are other issues contributing to the problem such as excessive slack, abnormal shock loading, or bent/damaged components etc.

If you are using the spec. cotter key, going to a harder material key or replacing it with a hard material pin may not be such a good idea as it would mask a larger systemic problem and eventually cause a worse breakage somewhere else. The cotter key or shear pin is there as the weak link to break before something really expensive breaks.

If you can give us more detailed info.; maybe we can come up with more ideas. I can imagine the frustration. My father is getting in his soy bean right now since the weather has been so warm and dry (great moisture content in the beans around 10-12%) Their combine went on the fritz too. Ended up calling in the John Deere guys with a huge tractor trailer rig for an on site repair.

There are quite a few 'self-powered' snowblowers mounted on just about anything you can think of around here, mostly because of a local welding/fabricating shop that used to be run by a real inventive type. <br>

Many years ago he developed a very straight-forward (read easy & cheap) way of driving a regular 3pth, PTO-driven type snowblower with either a full-sized car engine, or a 20hp Kohler horizontal shaft engine, depending on the size of blower you needed to run. <br>

Basically the theory goes like this, if a small gas engine produces 20hp at 2000rpm, then geared down to 500rpm, it will develop significantly more torque. The engine is geared down using a heavy double chain drive system to drive the input shaft directly, there is no clutch involved, shear pins only. Likewise, the larger units are usually powered by an air-cooled VW engine, although I have seen some powered by large diesel engines, these bigger units are mounted on a subframe complete with it's own battery, etc., then the entire deal is carried and used in the bucket of a large payloader, but I have seen them on dump trucks a few times.<br>

A full-time resident along the private road my cottage is on has a 7' blower mounted out front of a little Suzuki SUV, it is pushed by the truck, but rides on caster wheels. That little thing cuts through some pretty deep drifts without too much problem, I would think that the heater, wipers and radio make it a little more pleasant than a garden tractor would be doing the same task, not to mention quicker too.<br>

It is quite the set up. I am beginning to think I need to start a business to utilize it more effectively.
When I built it an engineer I was working with built a metal hoop shed to protect his and his father inlaws RV's. He laughed that I would spend that much money on the barn.
A little while later we had the 100+ winds rip across the 3 states. It took his barn out and severly damaged both RV's. We were also hit and had some damage to the old barn but not the concrete structure.
Again he scoffed and rebuilt the barn. Last spring a tornado ripped through the same area of Columbus MS and tore out the barn again and damage the RV again. It lifted before it hit here. I went down to help and offered to build one like mine. He ripped it down and replaced it with a small garage. Not sure where the RV went.
I never worked with Redstone, only Waterton and Aberdeen. They closed Waterton a number of years ago and moved everyone to Aberdeen.

I have not come across a Shibaura with the same angine as a 1510 . Shibaura heads are hard to find . They crack & are hard to fix. I think I may have a 1510 parts tractor with a good head. I'll have to check. I also may be able to repair your block or head. Email me

I have many Hinomoto manuals & can usually figure out the model from the engine model. If it has side by side sides , you do not have a common tractor , but something made for a special use.

I think some resources likely will turn up around here.

There is a relationship between Ford and Shibaura but I don't know which models nor am I sure who assembled them. Far as I know some of the engines are almost identical except for some parts that might be needed for rebuild work. Greater difference is likely for electric engine components and greater still for chassis etc. components. Still, a NH dealer may be of some help in maintaining the tractor.

Thank you Peters! I should have read here that TC30 = 1920 before my earlier post. Now I wonder what a TC33 is similar to.

I don't know TC30 specs but I think a 1920 may be more like a TC33. Both have 29 pto hp. The Ford version of a 1920 had a 4-cyl 122 cu in engine while a TC33 has a 3-cyl 91? cu in engine--unless tractortips is wrong.

The 1920 may be a little more tractor but you'll likely be happy with either. The re-done Ford '20-series and the TC-series tractors are all sort of like cousins. The 1920 has a good reputation around here and several of the original Fords are still in commercial service. I think 1920's are getting a bit large for compacts and Ford/NH may have sold more 1720's but they're pretty much the same.

Sounds like the plan is in hand but that's a good comment. I hadn't thought about sound reduction but it sure would help and definitely would be a reason to build a birm. Both the highway and railroad enter mild cuts along our property. At our camp they are twice as far but are above grade. Both are much louder at our camp--especially the railroad, which goes through 50 yards of dense bush before hitting open meadow. The bush doesn't do much about the train noise.

I don't know enough about tree root systems to know if some species fair better on birms than others. Ones that form taproots likely would be the most wind-firm. Another engineer and musician: Good to know and I'll try to keep my focus on tractor stuff.

I did the 50 hr myself. I think it was around $160.00 just for the oil and filters at the dealer. Thinking about looking for another source for the 200 hr.<br>

Ken if it is the lower ball joints then the noise in my finding is sparatic. Like I said the 940 Volvo requires you to turn right and stop to force the link into the slack position and then pops the next time you turn left. You never heard it other than that.
I would try backing up and turning in either direction and stopping hard. Then trying the same while travelling forward.
You need to cock the rifle before you can drop the pin. It took a lot of analysis on the 940 until I determine what it was and could make it repeat and this is someone that has seen it a few times before.

The McCormick tractors are not the same tractors as the CaseIH. CNH had to sell some plants in europe to be able to complete the merger, due to monopoly laws in europe. The result was the McCormick line from the sold factories.
The CIH line is going to add the Farmall name.

Therefore there will be two different tractor companies. A european tractor named McCormick painted red and a Japanese-american tractor named Farmall painted red. More than just a little confusing for the old time tractor buffs.
