I recently became the owner of a rebuilt Yanmar 2700 that was running great, but now has a dead battery. I have attempted to charge, but it will not hold. What is the replacement battery and remind me how to start after I get a new battery (Compression, heat glow plug and crank?)

After a charger has been on it awhile, I'd run a battery capacity test with a hydrometer. One or more cells probably won't test good and that's a sure sign a new battery is needed. If the battery tests OK I'd clean all terminals including the chassis end of the ground cable.
I run a conventional automotive battery in my Ford but there can be venting problems for some tractors. Diesels take big healthy batteries and clean connections to spin the engine fast enough to start them. Other than a factory replacement, I'd look for one with the highest amp hours and cold cranking amps that will fit in the compartment. My 24 pto hp Ford is speced for a 75AH/775CCA battery. The replacement has 75 AH and about 1000 CCA's. Larger engines could use bigger batteries.
If a new battery is installed, I'd keep track of the charge on it for awhile to make sure the charging system is OK. You might measure if there's appreciable drain on the battery when the engine and switch are off. Batteries that are never fully charges or are fully discharged frequently don't last long.
For starting: Put everything in neutral, crack the throttle, preheat it and crank it. Compression releases can be useful for cold weather starts. Release the compression, crank it until the starter motor comes up to max speed and then turn the turn on the compression. The starter spins faster with the compression off and the extra inertia will kick the engine through a few compression strokes a bit faster. ....

Yanmars don't have glow plugs. They have thermostart. On top of the engine you will find a little bottle, If it has a cap on it you have to fill it with diesel when you want to use it, some has a auto fill. Anyway it needs diesel to use the thermostart. But you hardly ever need it. Unless it's way below freezing. You just turn or pull, which ever system it has so it releases the compression. Crank till the oil light goes out, and then use the foot throttle to give it about half throttle. Then release the compression release, and it will start. If it gets cold enough to use the thermostart, you turn the key to the left for about 5 seconds or so, that will light a little fire in the intake. Then you use the same way as stated to start it. You can take the air cleaner off and watch while you turn it to the left and see it it lights a little fire. I has a element like a cig. lighter. If it doesn't work you may have to take it off and clean it. ....

Yes, I've heard of that system before. Always thought it was pretty clever but it never occurred to me to wonder where the fuel came from. Sure is good for Yanmar owners w/o manuals to know that maybe they have a bottle that has to be topped up. ....

The YM2700 is a pre-thermostart tractor. It does have glow plugs. ....
