Ok, this is probably a stupid question, but I'm new to tractors and there's something I need to know before I spend some cash.<br>Plows, middle-busters, and subsoilers all have to go into the ground to do there job. With the hydrolics on the 3pt. only lifting and not putting downward pressure on the implements, how do they get into the ground? Do you have to weight them to make the effective, or are they heavy enough? Does the design of the implement cause it to go into the ground?<br>I have some really hard compacted clay soil that I need to break up. Will a plow do the trick on a JD 850 4wd? How deep can I expect to plow?<br>Thanks for induring this newbie question, and taking the time to respond.

Sorry, but I paid $4500 just for My 24v B5.9 Cummins, <br>and can only imagine that it would cost more if I had to replace it. This engine <br>specifically calls for a CF or CG-4 grade oil. Which has been specified due to the sliding tappets <br>in the 24v engine. Most 15-40 oils at time of posting do not carry this certification. <br>The oil makers are currently making the necessary changes to meet specification. <br>FYI, AMSOIL's 5-30 & 15-40 needed no alterations to pass the certification with<br>flying colors I might add. I also agree with the first 50 hour hydro oil change, even though the JD manual doesn't call <br>for the 50Hour service change either. You will find that peoples view of Petro oil vs. Synthetic <br>seem to vary as much as the weather. If you don't have the time to invest in finding the numerous<br>studies that clearly indicate the benefits of Synthetics over petroleum products.<br>What do you have to lose by Spending or investing the $20-30 dollars it will cost you for the Synthetic<br>change. I have only gotten brochures on the landtracs from a dealer 60 miles from me. I will eventually make it over to him to see the tractors in person but like you were saying Todd is that input from someone who has owned one and used the loader and other features would help in deciding what tractor to get. While I am not familiar with the b2100 I do know that you can pull a single bottom plow with that type of hp. one other thing. If you are in a semi rural area and there are farmers near, you could hire your acrage done by one of them for a whole lot less effort and money than you think. These type also do a better job. Also have the guy disk the land when done plowing and it is a lot easier to work. Take my word for this if you don't do the plowing right and the get the area leveled right you will pay for it for years when mowing a lumpy, bumpy yard. i would recommend against rototilling unless you will leave it to settle for a few rains and then till it again to sit again. I have planted many areas like yours (including numerous sports fields) and you will be much happier if you see to it that you have a well graded area and there are a lot of guys that will botch the job. The details of the fine grading are the what make a large lawn easier to mow. Because of the size of the area you will want to go faster but if it is really bumpy you have to limit your speed. A little cost up front will pay for itself in the long run.<br>Hope I helped.

My 4300 started EVERY time this winter, never had to plug in the heater. Also starts very quickly in any temp, which is something my Boomer 1530 never did.

Suggestion to alleviate your problem of rear gauge wheels disturbing turf in tight turns. The wheels should not be carrying most of the weight of the mid-mount deck on a JD. The tractor should be carrying it with the gauge wheels front and rear slightly off the surface if you set the height of cut while on a concrete slab. In the turf these wheels will turn from brushing through the grass, but they should only be providing significant support force when passing over a bump or hillcrest. Most of the time they won't be carrying a high support load in a turn and thus won't have the ability to tear turf. There is a depth stop on the tractor so you can adjust the desired height of cut.

I agree with comments that you didn't loose anything in your purchase. I got a 4100 about June 1 of 98 and my dealer knew then JD planned to expand the 4000 series and discontinue the 6xx to 9xx series tractors. They learned specifically about the new machines (specs etc) with an Augusta factory visit around June 1. I am not sure when JD announced their intention to replace the 6xx to 9xx machines..it was probably early 98 as that kind of transition does not happen overnight. I sometimes wish I got the 755 instead of the 4100 although the 4100 is working fine for me now.

Yes Pete,<br>To educate you even further. Bungie straps, normally come in 4 flavors, Bungie,Virgin Rubber,<br>plastic & polyurethane. With such names as Bungie,tie down & Tarp straps! I'm sure <br>there are a few names I've missed. Must be an eastcoast thing to call it a TARP strap! And to use <br>these straps on tarps, for covering things like hay/straw/grain on a truck while in transportation <br>or in rain. String can be a real pain in the U know what. Not to mention that string<br>doesn't offer variable pressure or constant tension. All this time,I thought those little brass <br>gromments in tarps where made, just for this purpose.. What do you use? Your dealer is probably right,if the problem is only in reverse. the transmission has clutches that are activated by hydraulic pistons. A slight defect in the o-ring can leak enough oil to make the clutch not work right. I think it is a problem that occurs rarely. If the o-ring fixes the problem I wouldn't be scared of it. I have a set of Sony NC20 headsets that my wife bought me at a Service Merchandise Treasure Quest outlet for around $90.00 I use them when I get on the riding mower or bushog with my Deere 5200. I love them. They don't eliminate the noise, but they reduce it dramatically. That Deere and rotary cutter make a racket at 2400 rpm, but with the headsets and some Eagles or Doobie Brothers, I hardly notice. The time also flys!
