Ok, this is probably a stupid question, but I'm new to tractors and there's something I need to know before I spend some cash.Plows, middle-busters, and subsoilers all have to go into the ground to do there job. With the hydrolics on the 3pt. only lifting and not putting downward pressure on the implements, how do they get into the ground? Do you have to weight them to make the effective, or are they heavy enough? Does the design of the implement cause it to go into the ground?I have some really hard compacted clay soil that I need to break up. Will a plow do the trick on a JD 850 4wd? How deep can I expect to plow? Thanks for induring this newbie question, and taking the time to respond.

Where do you live? I am in central Georgia and the clay doesn't get any harder without a doubt than right here. I have a subsoiler and 1 blade (V notch) plow and I can dig with them to their design depth, about 6 - 10 inches deep with a JD 4100. It will usually take more than one pass but they will eventually dig down to as far as the 3 pt allows them to go. So to answer your question, yes the weight of the implement will help push it into the soil. Also, their design along with the weight makes them want to go down. A boxblade can be another story, there I add a heavy block to the top of it so I can scrap and level more efficiently otherwise boxblade won't scrap off much hard clay.Hope that helps. ....

BrainThe red clay don`t get no harder than here insouthern part of the state. But it Depends on what you won`t to do.Move dirt around an level. For your tractor is rated about 25 to 30 hp the plow will do the job if it is set right to go in the ground. The center link adjust the angle on the plow points up an down,An the right lift arm adjustment sets the angle left an right on the plow points, you should be able to plow 6 to 8" Subsoilers will go as deep as you can pull it.But The 8504x4 will just pull it so deep anly way,They come in different sizes 3'to 6' 6 shanks 4 an 8. We call them 6 shank tillers here. The middle buster is 1or2or3 big shank that breakes the hard pan to let water inter the ground. All three are desgin to go in the ground if you can pull it an the adjustment ar right. ....
