<br>Sounds very good, depending on condition of course... Does it have power steering? A small tractor with a loader and 4wd can be a bear to drive without PS.<br>I just paid about $12000 for an 87 with ~1800 hours (4WD, loader, PS) that was in fairly good shape, it had been neglected a little in the past few years, but seems to be ok. I also got a brand new 6 foot Woods finishing mower included.<br>My 1050 manual clams 36 engine hp and a little over 30 pto hp IIRC <br>If you get a used diesel, the first thing you should do (IMO) is change all the filters, especially the hydraulic and air filters. The outer air filter was totally clogged with red clay and the front end loader doubled in power and speed after I changed the clogged up filter.<br>The other tip is, both my 1050 and my dad's 850 wouldn't stay at pto rated engine speed because the fuel feed lever friction was too low... that is easily fixed once you realize it can be adjusted.<br>I love the 50 series JDs, I grew up (I'm only 25) using my dad's 850, and I now have a 1050 of my own (boy is dad jealous). <br>The only problem we ever had with the 850 was the brakes were worn out and we put off fixing them since we lived on level land (low country Sout Carolina). My youngest brother was pushing debris into a 15 foot deep manure pit once and pushed a little too close to the edge. As my brother bailed out the back, the tractor rolled on over the edge and fell down the 15 foot cliff, breaking the front axle. The front end loader kept the tractor from flipping over frontwards, but it was months before we managed to dig out the forks that had been attached to the bucket. They were stabbed pretty deep into the old manure and clay in the bottom of the pit.<br>FIX THOSE BRAKES!!!! <br>Either the original fall broke the axle, or the second one when we had pulled the 850 almost all of the way out of the pit and the chain broke, dropping it 15 feet again... :) <br>

My new (20 hours) JD 4200 seems to have a problem with the PTO brake. The dealer is telling me that they will have to open up the transmission to replace or adjust the brake. That sounds like major surgery to me. Does anyone know how much effort that is and how this might effect the tractor long-term? I'm hoping they won't break something else when tearing my tractor apart and putting it back together. The 4200 is a newer model and I'm hoping they have the expertise and tools to get the job done right. If I sound nervous it's because it took three weeks to get a new turn signal lens in to the dealership. I hate to think how long transmission and PTO brake parts might take. Would it be unreasonable to ask for a different tractor?

We were just talking about one of our buddies, who's truck with Wide, worn out M/T's had no problems going through this particular "wet" section, while a truck with New Super swampers dug in and got really stuck. What I meant by

If your truck can handle the slope(angles), your 4wd compact will have no problems.
Living in S.East PA, Snow fall hasn't required either chains or R1s.
Think long and hard about these two statements:
More traction = more Wear.
R1s excel in a Soft/Loose surface, their ability to gain traction is based upon the
amount of Bite into the surface. The smoother/harder the surface, the worse these tires perform & Wear. Turf tires are typically the opposite.
The Smoother/Harder the surface the better they perform. R4 Ind seem to be a compremise somewhere in the middle of that mess.
Only you can know what you need the unit to do. I will say this: I don't think you need chains.
Looking at your snow req's, I hardly see the need for the R1s. If you have thick or soupy mud in your pastures,
I think you need R1s, maybe even chains. Of course I've seen Wide worn tires on a truck ride over top of the muck, and a truck with new Mudder tires dig in and get really stuck. Hummm...
I wonder if you can install Duel wheels on compact? In either R1 or R4?
That would definitely help on the hills, and maybe in the mud. I think I'll post that question.

Do a search on the subject, both here and onthe farm machinery forum, this is an old discussion. I run a stump grinding service and spent year working construction. I have offer opinion on several occations before. If I can find the time I will try to come back and repeat them.

I run a small stump removal and tree care buisiness. I have a compact tractor and a stand alone chipper. I found that I can buy a stand alone commercial quality chipper used for less than I could buy a new PTO model, and that the used chipper would out produce, and out last the PTO model. I bought my Morbark 6 inch chipper for $3500 with less than 600 hours on it. It has a 35 hp wisc. engine and will handle a steady diet of 4 inch stuff and occational 6 inch stuff.<br>You should be prepared for some very high maintenance on any chipper. The knives need regular sharpening.<br>You should buy hydraulic feed on either a stand alone or a pto.<br>Concider renting. If you need a 6 inch chipper it should go for about $150-160 per day. If you rent for 2 days per year it will take more than 10 years before you would be better off owning, not considering maintenance, repair and interest on the money for the price of the chipper. For most people a small stand alone 8 hp shredder with limited 1-3 inch chipping capability and renting is the way to go.

I wouldn't worry about 2 h.p. But know that the TC25 and TC29 have <br>the same engine, just that the TC29's is rigged up to work harder and<br>therefore put out more horsepower. I've been looking at the Boomer's<br>and think one should either choose the TC25 or TC33 because the engines <br>are not working as hard to give the rated horsepower. I would think<br>the 1630 is comparable to the TC29. The hour meter is of questionable value in evaluating a used tractor with unknown history. You need to be able to assess the overall condition of the unit, and determine if it matches the hours shown. This will give you an indication of the care the machine has (or hasn't) received, and whether or not the hour meter has been changed out of necessity or altered out of deception. If you aren't comfortable making this judgement, pay someone to help you. Finding a used tractor includes learning where parts and service are available, and the relative cost and quality compared to other brands. Good luck.

The B30 was replaced by the B851. It weighs around 1350 lbs without frame kit or hydraulic pump. The Deutz 3006 does not require a frame kit. The YM336 requires frame kit, compatible with YMYFL-1500 loader or Kelley DL2000 loader. The YM276 requires frame kit, compatible with DL2000 loader.contact me if you need more info.
