After months of reading this board I have finally jumped into the water and bought a JD 4400 12/12 with 73

David,<br>You may very well be correct in your comments of alternators ratings.<br>Generators for example usually give rating in MAX, not RMS or Usable power.<br>Being in the Electronics/Electrical field, I have found products to be <br>advertised both ways. generally better quality components are given as RMS<br>Cheaper ones are usually MAX. If you looked at the DC voltage level on an <br>O-Scope,you will find the a reading similar to this:~~~~~~~. A battery by itseft<br>will look like:____________. Lights, heaters, pretty much don't care, Your tractor gauges<br>generally, Have circuitry to Create a true_____line, and are made to allow this.<br>My advise, you don't run your motors at red-line,(hopefully), the same is true<br>for Alternators. Also, you could pull 25-30 Amps for a short time, the battery will make up the <br>difference. <br>Like a water tank, if the drain is more than what you can put back in, you<br>will run out in time. <br>

This is not one of the newer models. It is about 10 years old. Overall it has been a good machine. I have experienced only one major problem - a leaking seal and now this fuel thing which was brought on by letting it get to a low fuel level. The Hydraylics are not as responsive as I would like. Some folks don't like the hand clutch for PTO operation. I don't regret buying it.

<br>If I pull the tractor in the garage forward, I plow in reverse. If I backed the tractor in, I plow going forward. I find it makes very little difference. Where I live it is not uncommon to have to plow 30 or more inches of snow at a time.

Amazing but true - some people do still do business with a handshake. We ordered a JD4100 in April (on a handshake) and were given a 4 week delivery. 2 weeks later dealer called to say he still didn't receive a delivery date from factory & was afraid he wouldn't make our promised delivery date! By the end of 4 weeks still no delivery date, but he found a unit for me. One week after delivery, he called out of the blue to see how it was working. I guess that's how his family has kept the business going for 50 years...

Tested a set of R4 IND tires on fine sod grass but needs advise

Those model numbers are not U.S. models. They will not have a 2 stage clutch or<br>live independent PTO. You can still use a bush hog on one without live PTO if<br>you use an over-run coupler on the PTO. A 5ft bush is too big for one of these <br>tractors. 4ft would be the MAX and I have seen 42inch bush hogs that I would feel<br>even more comfortable using behind one of these little tractors.<br>Brent

I bought JD4300 w/ HST, 4WD, DSCV, 420 loader, folding ROPS, R4 (IND) tires.<br>Added a 513 rotary cutter, LandsPride box scraper, and separate 5hp chipper/shredder.<br>All that for $20,250 including 5% IN sales tax. (Haven't received the 420 yet)<br>

It is kind of hard to put a price on one that I haven't seen or had for sale<br>myself. I can give you something to compare to though. I Have a Hinomoto E2304<br>(cross over to Massey 1030) 26 hp 4WD with 1900 hours for $4500. You would be <br>better off to get a Hinomoto 1804 or 204 because they cross over to a Massey 1020.<br>The 2004 does not have an American cross over. The 2004 was built from '82 up<br>at least '87. What's up with the belly mower? I've never used a rear mount mower, so I'm having a hard time understanding advantages besides easy on/off. With a belly mower, I can trim close and around trees and seldom need to push trim. Also, I can monitor how close I am to obstructions by looking down instead of behind me. Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating for a belly mower, I really want to understand the pros/cons of each setup. In fact, I've been looking at a rear mount flail mower, but haven't acted on it because I'm concerned that my trim work might increase as a result. Please help!

IMHO, I'm not sure Ag is where anyone wants to be right now. I think the Case/NH deal was to better position them both for construction equipment, which CAT and Deere do well at now. But, I'm just a keyboard jocky. What do I know...

Correct me if I am wrong please, but don't all modern tractors have an override clutch on the pto so that even a non-live system ( transmission driven) can not be driven forward by the momentum of the rear attatchment? I own hst so it isn't an issue for me, but that is my understanding. Seems like the lawyers would have a field day if this problem wasn't eliminated at the design stage.<br>Paul
