Here's our situation: We are purchasing a 60 acre parcel for our alpaca farm. About 30 acres is wooded and we will have about 12-15 acres of pasture (fairly level). We will be building 2 log homes, a 2000 sf barn, a 750 sf utility building, and about 6,000 ft of fencing (locust post & woven wire) and 1500 ft of driveway. The tasks that first come to mind are cutting the pasture, moving manure, some light clearing, post hole digging, possibly trenching for water and electric. We will also be starting a business for custom log home building & design. Any suggestions on tractor size, manufacturer, options, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Guy, You may want to take a close look at the Kubota 2710HST. It has the horses and small size that would seem to do all your looking for and more. The price is probably a little more than the 4100, but the 2710 will definately meet your needs. Check the Kubota Source page for more info.<br>

I decided on a new 2wd 1070 at $14,200. This tractor has 35 PTO hp and ag tires. It will primarily be used to mow a couple of acres of grass, box blade a half mile long driveway, disc and cultivate garden. Also, my family has a cattle operation so it will be used to bush hog (6 ft)rake hay and move 800lb round bales. I have been looking for over a year now and for the horsepower and money it should suite my purposes. I looked at a 4400 with sync and r4 tires for a $1000 more but didn't feel the 4 wd was necessary and didn't think it would handle heavy bushogging. I am also pleased that it has wet brakes and a syncronized transmission. I also really like the 790 for the money but didn't like the dry brakes and thought it was a tad light for my chores. I will keep you posted about the perfomance and such. I cannot tell everyone how much it helped reading the various posts on this board.<br>thanks,<br>James

I don't use a hammer to attach any of my 3PH implements. I don't think they're necessary. What I do is to back the tractor the best I can to get near the hitch. With the arms floating and the tractor in neutral, I lift one arm to the right height, grab a rib on the tire and pull the tractor backwards until the pin and hole lines up and push the arm onto the pin. You rock the tire back and forth a little and the pin will easily slide on. You have great mechanical advantage to move the tractor by grabbing the ribs on the tires. The center link (upper arm?) is extended to meet the attachment pin. The other lower arm can then be brought in or out by adjusting the center link. I have a 24HP Yanmar so you can see it's about an average sized compact. One of the key items is that it has a gear transmisson, not a hydrostatic. If you can get a hydro into a free rolling neutral, there shouldn't be much difference.<br>

Guy, I have the same type situation, and I opted for the Deere 4200 4x4 hydro with the 420 loader and R4 tires. I use a 5' full-floating finish mower. 4+ acres of yard with trees and natural areas. My 4200 is on order and am currently using my other compact tractor to do the job. Good luck. Kevin

The Loader is NOT a Quick Attach type, so you would leave it on at all times. Since it dosen't come off easy it is also alot more heavy duty than the easy off type. These tractors are specifically designed to be more rugged for Loader Backhoe work and have higher capacity hydraulics as well with a live PTO.

anyone withinfo on the comparison of the glideshift version of kubota tracotrs please let me know the pros and cons of it against the dt which is a synchr tranny. most people have told me the gst is mot trouble free and easier on clutches with no power loss like the hst. any info certainly would be appreciated.

I have a 4100 with the R4's. I mow the lawn with it and have had no real problems. I just try to avoid the lawn the day after rain, but that is because of all the clay I have and turfs would leave tracks in that when it is wet! If you are going with a 4200 or 4300 you will have a greater weight to deal with.<br>

The Iseki tractors are very good units. I was a White, Ford, & Kubota dealer in KS. Iseki makes the White, Bolins & M-F tractors. But I have seen very few blue Iseki tractors, most are gray market.

John Deere makes good stuff. You will not have any problems with one of their products. However, you will find them to be somewhat pricy when purchased new. Bush Hog Squeeler is another premium product. I have a Howse 500 (5') and it gives me good service. King Kutter is a widely marketed brand with a good reputation. Most independent tractor dealers and repair shops carry one or two lines of equipment. A lot of very good stuff is made by small companies with limited distrubution areas. Implements are heavy and shipping cost avoidance favors the locals in this highly competitive market. I would shop some independents and see what they have to offer. Ask for the names and numbers of customers you can contact. You may find that a Deere is more than you need. Good luck.

First thing I always do is to replace the thermostat....even though that is<br>hardly ever the problem you need to eliminate the possibility. Cost with a <br>gasket is about 15 bucks. <br>Then you can use a radiator flushing chemical. I leave it in for about 15<br>minutes or until the engine gets warm. Then rinse many times with a garden hose<br>stuck into the radiator inlet. <br> Finally, refill using no more than 50% antifreeze. Pure antifreeze does not<br>cool as well as water.<br>

Thanks all for the help.I would consider a L235 but all I've found around here for sale are either brand new <100 hrs or beat up buckets of bolts ( 7000 hrs,no hood,etc) so I see if I wanna go big Orange I'm gonna have to hunt one down!<br>As for the Yanmar I will go ask the dealer about the front bearings,and also if he services them.But I am thinking it will have to be awfully cheap for me to resist a Kubota.<br>Thanks Again,<br>Keith

Amen to the coering aerator. That's going to bring up a bunch of plugs that <br>will breakdown rather quickly and serve to fill in the holes. The trick then <br>is to move the core residue to the low spots. The backward rear blade should do <br>the trick for you. just don't be too aggressive in trying to flatten. <br>Then go over lawn with a pull behind roller to flatten out where you put the <br>residue. Trick is to criss cross (2 diagnal passes) with the corer to achieve <br>lots of holes (more residue) and complete coverage. That ought to also improve <br>overall health of the lawn via loosening soil and allowing penetration of rain <br>thru the turf to engourage deeper roots.

i just purchased a 1920 new holland 4x4, shuttle shift ,w/loader and 6'box scrape for $15400.00 + $80 tax. the tractor is less than a year old 100hrs im in western north carolina. was the best deal i could find on a compact, not many around to pick from unless you buy new. the tractor has r1 tires the dealer said r4s are not avaliable on this model,just wondering how true this is. thanks to everyone on the mboard ive been checking it for the past 6months , really helped. ps i checked out the
