backhoe is not a good idea...". Seems like he was far more experienced with
tractors and the like than me (it doesn't take much!) so I thought I would
ask the experts. I am planning to build a log home and misc. log structures
and was thinking I could use the backhoe to lift logs up to maybe 6-8' or so.
These would be long (maybe 28') logs, so balance would be a concern. Weight
would vary...with 2000 lbs or so being the max. I've been thinking the purchase
of a full size backhoe might be great for me...I have empty land at this point.
I attended an auction last weekend in my area (Finger Lakes area in NY State)
where 2WD backhoes (FORD 555) sold for about $6500...with some 4000 hours
or so. I wasn't there to bid that time, but I thought perhaps at the next
auction... ">  Lifting with a Backhoe

think this set-up is similar to your b7300. It's worked great for me. I'm digging
in a clay soil without a lot of rocks, but pretty gummy when wet. I've found that
if I dig to the limit of my 3-pt (36"+) and shut off the pto, sometimes the
hitch has trouble pulling the auger out of the ground. Two things help- first,
pull the auger out several times on the way down and let the dirt fly off.
Second, keep the pto turning while lifting the auger back up- that way the dirt
column in the auger doesn't re-attach itself to the edge of the hole. On the
final clean-out, however, it seems more efficient to shut off the pto, lift the
auger out of the hole, then give it a quick spin to clean off the dirt- it'll
fly out a foot or so and not back in the hole. The digger I have is from

with a 4100 & loader combination. I would however be careful if you are considering
liquid for the rear tires, if you plan to mow with the unit. The JD manual calls for 6 wheel
weights (60lbs a piece) plus the ballast box with at least 750lbs of weight for proper ballasting of the tractor
while using a loader. Liquid in the tires will be cheaper than cast weights, but you may be sorry.
Removing cast weights for treading lightly is easier to remove than the liquid.
