I found this site the other day, with hydraulic driven pumps for irrigation systems. Just another idea rather than a PTO pump.

I have a MF35 on this tractor their is a pipe that comes out of the valve cover and goes down the side of the engine and stops above the frame. Just recently blue smoke started to come out of this pipe when I have a load (disking or using my blade) on the tractor. Why is the blue smoke coming out of this pipe? What is this pipe for? What weight oil should I be using in this tractor?

Duane, that's some pretty good work. I don't imagine there are that many people around tractor boards that could come up with those calculations--including myself.

In looking for a splitter valve, you're most likely dealing with open centred hydraulic systems on the tractor and likely a PTO pump as well. Open centred systems pump oil continuously while closed centred ones do not. Open centred systems only develop high pressure only when a control valve is operated. Otherwise, the pump circulated oil a low pressure through the lines and back to the reservoir.

Many valve assemblies sold can be used for open or closed centre systems, but a plug must be removed for open centre use. Valves also come in conventional and power-beyond types. A power beyond type would be required for many, but not all, hook ups to tractor hydraulics, but probably not for a PTO hookup. Anyway, some of these basic issues may affect the choice of a splitter valve.

Roger: Thanks for the reply. I think I've reconciled myself to buying the fittings from NH for the reasons you gave. For those reasons, I also don't really blame the dealer for not being able to identify the threads.

The main part is a t-fitting adapter that allows a gauge to be hooked into the PS line. Unfortunately, I probably can't solve the problem of hooking the gauge to one of the t-fitting legs until I actually get the fitting. It'll probably remain a mystery to be solved by self-education.

I'm guilty of not being too clear. My problem is the PS rather than the loader. It's fairly weak and pulses when turning the wheels while the tractor is stationary. There is a manual procedure for adjusting the PS relief valve, which might be the problem, but a gauge is required to set the correct pressure. The priority valve is another possibility, but I'd probably need a gauge for testing it as well. I'm reluctant to increase the relief valve adjustment without a gauge, because I might end up disguising a mechanical steering problem with abnormally high pressure.

Of course, I could be wrong and all sorts of ways of sorting out the problem may be common that don't require testing. I appreciate all advice I receive. Thanks.

I have the belly mower of my JD 950 for sale. Its all there and complete. I am asking 600$ firm for it. I live in the middle of Kansas. I dont know if shipping is possible as its all big and heavy. I have pictures I can send via email if you request.

With the trailer near the capacity there are a number of things you need to consider.
You need to make sure that you have proper weight distrubution between the tougue and the trailer axels when the trailer is loaded. I would recommend that you find the position required to place the proper tougue weight on the truck and then mark the position of the tractor on the trailer. You will need to hit the marks closely each time you load the tractor.
Bouncing or unloading of the tougue weight will have the trailer trying to pass you as you go down a hill.
Movement of the tractor when loaded (dynamic) can cause a problem, you need to make sure the tractor is secured down to the trailer.
Be careful not to add any additional weight on the trailer. No spare equipment!!!. Place it it the truck even if it requires you to lift it higher.
Check that your ball, reciever, and hitch can take the weigh required. A lot of recievers and balls are 5-6000 lb rated not 8000.

On my 235, the ROPS is welded to the plate on the top of the axle that holds the fender. I don't know if this plate would come with the ROPS, in which case it is a bolt up or if you would have to do the welding.......

It is time for me to get my first rotary cutter. My tractor is a diesel Massey Ferguson 230. It has 34.5 PTO horsepower. I am fairly sure that I want a 6' cutter. I will be cutting about 40 acres of pasture with fairly minor growth -- nothing over one inch in diameter. It is, in fact, mostly grass and broom straw right now. A few blackberry bushes in places that I really need to work on. I have looked at a bewildering array of cutters and prices. Ranging from a Bushhog 272 at $1550 down to a King Kutter from TSC at $629. In between, I have seen International, Woods, Howse, and a couple of others. I am not positive that the tractor will handle the weight of the heaviest Bushhog brand 6 foot cutter. I have no front end weights and the tires are unfilled. I'm certain that the light weight pieces won't give me a problem, but I am concerned about longevity. Would anyone care to rank the available cutters in terms of quality, weight, parts availability, and overall desirability? Any recommendations for a poor farmer?

I've a good friend who is a Massey compact tractor dealer, so I've gotten to follow them pretty closely for the last 15 years. IMHO, they are a darn good tractor and are every bit the match of the JD, Kubota, and NH. Somehow MF hasn't done a good job of promoting their compacts, but everyone knows the name. The compact engines and tranny are quiet, smooth, and reliable, and the MF somehow feels rugged to me - maybe some of the metal is thicker. The next is just a personal thing, but I sure like the MF seating position and control layout. If I were buying a new compact they would be right there at the top of my list.

I use a vaccum to collect leaves plus the mower chops the leaves up.It's sort of a durty job but beats racking.It has a 12 bu.wagon that blows in they get pack in from bouncing over the yard then you can dump them where ever you like.This works good for me.

With the price that those JD430W are bringing it must have paid for some of that new tractor. That's a very collectable model. It is nice to think that a guy could have bought that tractor brand new in 1960, used it for 40 years, and probably sold it at a profit. With any luck, we will be doing the same thing 40 years from now.

Stopped by my local J.D. dealer yesterday to pick up some
parts. They had a brochure on the 4000 Ten series in their literature rack. Looks like the big changes are in the electronic operating system, eHydro transmission, ePower reverser and iMatch quick-attach hitch.

Also now have a 4010 (18 HP), 4110 (20 HP) and 4115 (24 HP) models.

The biggest problem I see with trailers is that people tend to overload them. A 7000# GVW trailer is exactly what it says, Gross Vehicle Weight. These tandem trailers weigh right around 1800# so you can only put 5200# on the trailer. Personally, I have a 14,000# GVW trailer with brakes on both axles and TORSION axles. When I put my tractor with loader and some rear attachment on this trailer it pulls like a dream. This trailer weighs a hefty 2500# and pulls rough empty. But then again, I rarely pull it empty. Torsion axles make a world of difference and being an engineer I would prefer to err on the side of caution especially since I trailer my tractor alot. I also have a 12,000 weight carrying (not weight distributing) hitch on my truck. Again, better safe than sorry.

Does anybody use a pull behind mower with their Gator. I'm probably going to buy a tractor of some type to do some brush work but I'd like to be able to use the investment I've got in the Gator for more than getting the mail. thanks

I have both a B6100 (14hp) and B7100 (16hp), both 3 cylinder diesel, 4WD HST. Neither tractor has enough horsepower to mow heavy grass with a 60 inch belly or 60 inch RFM. Both tractors have a tendency to easily overheat and push coolant out the overflow. I constantly have to watch the radiator and clean dust and grass from the cooling fins. You may already know both of these tractors use gravity cooling, ie. no water pump. While these are great little tractors, they both are operating right on the edge of the performance envelope. I have used a Kubota 48" tiller on the B6100 and it worked fine. My suggestion is go for a machine with at least 20 hp, that's what I am planning to do soon. Know anybody interested in a B6100 with a 48" belly and 1400 hours or a B7100 witha 60 inch belley and 600 hours? :-) As to your question about worth, seems like all compact tractors are worth a fortune. I think $3850 for the B7100 you mentioned and with the hours listed is probably about right..

Todd: Happy the problem was a simple fix. In response to your relief valve question. Relief valves are spring-loaded ball valves that open when pressure overcomes the spring. As such, they are pretty reliable things, and since they are safety devices, they'd better be reliable.

I haven't heard of one sticking closed, but it's not uncommon for a spring to break and then the valve won't hold pressure. Springs also can occasionally weaken and require the valve to be adjusted by placing shims behind the spring. The results of such failures would be the opposite of your problem. The engine wouldn't labour because the hydraulics wouldn't work under any appreciable load. There are relief valves in the hydraulic high-pressure line, the 3ph, and most SCV's as well as HST's and power steering.

There also are check valves here and there that prevent backflow that may cause loads to drop in event of ruptured lines or pump failures. Again, these are very reliable devices. There usually are no check valves in lines from the SCV to loader cylinders, and ruptured lines do cause loaded buckets to crash.

Small round balers were the first types I remember. I also remember the ones my uncles had wrapped but did not tie the bales. That was a job for my cousins and me. If you look at a really old round baler that doesn't tie, it's good to have a bunch of kids that can be pressed into service.

I also seem to recall that the size of the bales were somewhat adjustable�one cousin used to complain about his brother who liked big bales and not too many trips to pick them up from the field. He�d want the bales stacked high on the wagon and expect us to fling the bales up high enough to put on another course. Don�t know; maybe brothers just like to complain about each other. Myself, I developed just some minor expertise with hay hooks and a few muscles.
