Many aircraft have gone to value regulated Pb acid batteries to reduce the risk of acid leakage.
At present there are very few Pb acid battery manufactures in the US. Johnson Control, Dekka (Penn Manufacturing), Johnson controls, Exide, Delco and GNB produce 99% of the batteries. Batteries are branded with the numberous names that distribute batteries. Some like Sears or Interstate switch manufactures to achieve the better price, for them.
The price of a battery has stayed constant since the 70's. Some of this is due to the automation, recycling and new battery separators with has reduce costs, but some is due to the reduction in thickness of the Pb plates, the thickness of the battery separator and the reduction in the amount of acid.
One needs a battery that has high cold cranking amps, is build to be low discharged (thicker separators) and is built to be bounce around.
On the short side, Dekka is the OEM battery for 90% the large equipment manufactures and road trucks. They tend to be conservative in their manufacturing and use thicker battery separators.
The other suggestion is the use of a valve regulated Pb acid (VRLA) battery. These are better for all these application and have no acid leakage. The rolled batteries have high CCAs, these are the batteries used in the small portable jump start packs. They are also used on the electric wheel chairs. On the down side the VLRA batteries are expensive.
As many of the tractors are not used too often the low discharge rate maybe something that would appeal to the average compact tractor owner.

Howdy Larry. We can get you started. First of all, I don't know this loader, but if it is like most of them out there (except recent JD), then what you are describing is in the hydraulic control valve that you work with your right hand. This is called a "dual cylinder hydraulic control valve" or sometimes you hear it as "loader control valve" or even "dual spool valve". It should have 4 hoses coming out the top, and as Tom says you can learn a lot by swapping both right hoses with both left hoses.
Before I go any farther, I can set your mind at ease on your leaky cylinder. That isn't the problem. Neither is it a little bit of air trapped in the lines.
Two questions for you Larry: Is the loader control valve a single stick "joystick" type or does it have two independent control levers? The other and most important question is "does this model loader have the self-leveling bucket?

Stan & Mathew's comments are pretty good descriptions. If the surface is too hard to cut, the scarifiers should loosen it, but if they don't some sand bags on top of the box would help. Lightweight boxes and blades don't cut too well. Weight can be added, but that puts additional stress on 3ph mounts that, in an inexpensive implement, may be barely adequate anyway. If there are gross corrections to be made to the grade, I usually cut the high places using the rear cutter, and then drag material to low places in the box. If the problem is a too surface, then the box may simply sink down and fill up irrespective of the front blade angle. In such cases, the box can be held up with 3ph position-control, but then every time the front wheels go over a bump, the box digs in. The divots can be filled in, and the grade gets a little better each pass. Loose gravel illustrates the too soft problem. The box simply sinks even with the top-link fully extended. I work loose gravel by doing the initial spreading using position control. If substantial bumps and dips remain, I cut the high spots into the lows using the rear cutter. I then, touch up the grade by spreading here and there by back dragging with the loader (bucket angled down and floated). At this point, the gravel is still too soft to support the box, so I compact the gravel by back dragging with the loader. The bucket is fairly flat and down-pressure is held to lift the front wheels. Steering has to be done with the brakes. After compaction, the box can be used normally to finish the grade. There is an assumption here that I think everybody is making. I'm assuming that the box has a fixed rather than hinged rear cutter. Operation of a hinged cutter box is similar, but maybe is a little trickier than a fixed cutter box.

That seems to be in the ballpark. 1500 hours is not a significant amount of time on a properly maintained diesel. If tires are good, and it shows signs of having been well cared for, I would consider that an appropriate starting point, particularly with the attachments.

290 hours is NOT demo... maybe Rental or Lease or Used {warranty never filed}, certainly NOT demo. The average user will put that on in 3 years of "working" the tractor...Check it out, have a friend call the shop requesting to "rent" a 30 PTO HP compact tractor for a month, and you'll get your answer. Somewhere around $15,800 you should be able to purchase a 4400 new, then go from there...The only advantage with this unit is "factory warranty".

Bolens was bought out by Troy-Built which still have parts availability. Bolens 2104 is 21 engine, 04 is 4WD {02 would be 2WD etc.} About 16-18 PTO HP, as another poster indicated, Iseki currently produces Massey Ferguson 1200 series, the new Agco compact series and joint with Landini on larger ag units. Three years ago, a friend purchase a "garage quality"/like new 2104 with about 8 - 10 implements in the deal {also like new condition} for $6K. It's been a "can do anything" tractor for performance... At $4-5K, I don't think you can hurt yourself, buy it, use it for a few years and probably still sell it for the same price? The Iseki has been a sleeper tractor...

The local NH dealer has both Case and NH. I quized him when I was looking at the blue and he said he would not stock the Case as it would be more. I did look at the red in fact I brought one home for a dig, but that was from the MF dealer. The price was right but I went for the green.
I'm afraid I have a lot of contrast at the moment, on my farm, a red MF, a green JD and a blue Ford.
What is wrong with the MF red?

In addition to Art's comments, make sure to keep the underside of your mower deck cleaned. If there is a bunch of clippings matted to the deck, it reduces the lift from the blades and it keeps the grass from having space to stand. This will compound your compression problem.

I'm looking for a particular type of pto mounted stump grinder that has a minimum 12" wide cutting wheel. I have 2-3,000 apple tree stumps to take out and I'd like to grind them in one pass rather than use the type of grinder that sweeps back and forth.Does this sound familiar to anyone? I think I once saw one of these on E-bay.(I've got 75HP at the pto.)

Roger: I missed your comment about the 530 governor rod. Don't know if you've found one yet, but you might try posting on www.ytmag.com. Actually, I'd be surprised if you aren't aware of the site. Anyway, the Ford Discussion Board has participation from a few people who seem to really know older Fords. Parts sources are sometimes identified. I don't know how active the JD board is.

Without knowing the tractor, The rod sounds lift the pitman arm, which comes off the steering sector and connects to a drag link that goes forward to the tie-rods. I'm taking a guess that the purpose of the shield is to protect operators' feet rather than the steering arms. The construction doesn't sound heavy enough for a brush guard. There probably is some potential for getting a foot caught in the mechanism while turning. If so, I wouldn't underestimate the safety hazard. Operating a tractor takes a lot of concentration. Feet and hands can end up in all sorts of places without a person realizing it. If you have PS you probably can hear a hydraulics sound while turning. It sounds something like a relief valve but softer. Any hydraulic lines going to the steering sector indicates power steering. Likewise, any device in the high-pressure line that connects to two large and one small line indicates is either the system relief valve or the PS priority valve (PS on some tractors is driven from a 2nd pump rather than a priority valve). The system relief valve can be identified, because the small line runs directly to the sump in the TX/DIFF cases. Any priority valve would be located between the relief valve and the pump. Mine is located on the bottom of the pump and may appear as part of the pump. It helps to have a repair manual to sort some of this stuff out, and eventually you need one to do almost any tinkering.

Yes, that's the way I understood your comment. The spool gets damaged. It just seems ironic that a device put in, as I understand, to protect the 3ph from junk accidentally introduced during implement swapping may cause as much damage as the problem it's intended to prevent.

I'll tell you who I get my Yanmar parts from at the end of this rant....So just skip down there when you get the urge.
I know that most grey-market Yanmar parts are available....it just takes a dealer who gets enjoyment form working out the parts trail. Such a person would be about half tractor hobbyist and half mystery buff, as well as a pretty darn good mechanic. He would have to have been around long enough to accumulate a good library of parts books and information. And since I can't imagine that there is much money in grey-market tractors, he probably makes his living doing something else. Or maybe retired from something else.
On the owner's end, someone who owns a grey market tractor is going to be a lot happier person if he enjoys doing his own maintenance, orders parts that he might need well in advance, and generally doesn't mind waiting for special parts.
Not all Yanmars are grey market. If - like me - you just like Yanmars for their over-all quality then you could buy one of the US Yanmars from the 1970s or 80s. Parts for those are readily available from Yanmar USA in this country.
There is also a good US Yanmar dealer in Denver - Dan at Colorado General Equipment. He stocks parts for the US Yanmars only and his service department does work on US Yanmars. As far as I know he doesn't do have parts or do any work on the greys market machines. He is a friend, and I pick up big parts from him sometimes when I stop by to chat. I just got a full set of turf tires and wheels from him and have my eye on a LandPride six foot back blade...

I can't help you on the snow removal, but it sounds like the 4100 would do fine for most everything except moving the tree stumps. I don't know how your soil is, but here in north Texas I can't budge 4" tree stumps with my Kubota B2710 which is similar to the JD 4200 (somewhat lighter though). Pay a guy with a bulldozer a few hundred to knock those over and then drag them to a pile with your 4100.

A rotary cutter does a fair job on grass although not the quality cut of a finish mower. It does handle big weeds and brush much better than a finish mower however. You would be limited to a 4' rotary cutter on the 4100 which would be no big deal on 1 acre, or even 5 acres. If you want ot use a 5' you will need to go to the 4200 (which I believe is MUCH more expensive than a 4100).

If you truly don't require the quality of a finish mower, the rotary cutters are less expensive anyway, and the funnest rear implement to use. They ride roughshod over all kinds of vegetation and it gives a a feeling of power......

My B7200D won't turn over. The other day it wouldn't start and I filled the battery with water and was able to get it started. I started it again the other day but couldn't get it restarted after attaching the bush hog. This time I resorted to using the decompression lever to get it started. Again this morning it wouldn't start. The decompression lever doesn't help. It turns but won't turn over. Do I need a new battery or are there other things I can check? Thanks in advance for any advice
