Murf: since you know something about my environment, it's a safe assumption that, after giving the bugs their due, I am incapable of feeling picked on by anything. Well dang, we�ve put up with three days of humid polluted air from the prosperous south at the same time the white pines here are pollinating, and the black fly still isn�t quite finished off. Mosquitoes, sand fly, deer fly and others are alive and well also. About engines: Bits and pieces of this discussion should be in the archives. I believe I gained an understanding that compression ratio is the main difference in engine performance. A diesel should have a smaller displacement than an equivalent HP gas engine. I'm not sure that there is any inherent reason why gas engines develop less torque at low RPM's than diesels. As far as I know high torque/low RPM gas engines are used. It's a matter of how they're tuned--length of intake and exhaust manifolds etc. For most applications, I think it's just efficiency. Since a gas engine will run at high RPM's, why not tune it to develop max torque there and take advantage of the HP gains? I think the situation is that a gas engine can't run at the compression ratios of a diesel, so why design a gas engine to compete with a diesel? I don't know if a diesel is efficient at high RPM's, but I suspect not. I believe that the spill timing on diesel injectors spray fuel over a fair length of time and continue spraying even after combustion starts. I don't know how well that would work at high RPM's.

Chuck: I remember now, but don't recall the switch. Fortunately there are folks here like Murf and others who have seen a bunch of different tractors. I don't know from what Murf said if a safe conclusion is that you have draft control but not position control. My 1710 has position control without the draft control option. My understanding of typical operation with draft control is that the position control is set to a desired depth and then the draft control lever is set to adjust between heavy and light draft. With a light draft adjustment, a relatively small pressure on the top-link causes the 3ph to go into lift mode. Lift reduces the top-link pressure and the implement returns to the position set. If you have draft control, there may be an adjustment somewhere. If you don't have position control, operation may be less convenient, but you probably can adapt to the hitch. I believe there are other hitch systems where the control lever is centred. Up raises and down lowers, and the speed of operation depends on how far the control lever is pulled. I think the 3ph floats up like any other 3ph. I believe people get along with this type system pretty well. The system may 'feather' better than a position control system. I'd probably get along OK with such a system, because I seldom am very precise with the depth or need to retain a particular depth. The main advantage of position control is that a stop can be set on the control lever. With the stop set, the 3ph can be raised to tinker with the implement, drive somewhere else etc., and then moving the lever back to the stop returns the implement to the original depth.

I am talking to a dealer about a used L2350DT with 249 hours on it. It has a LA400 FEL with a little damage, and a Woods 7500 backhoe. During negotiations, I discovered that the tractor needed a new clutch. The dealer has agreed to put a new clutch in the tractor at his cost, and to install a sub frame mount for the backhoe at a cost to me of $500. Total cost to me will be approximately $12,500. The dealer is going to provide a 50/50 warranty on parts and labor for 30 days. Should the clutch situation be an issue, and is the tractor capable of supporting the backhoe. I would also like to know if this sounds like a good price on this model with the implements it has on it.

That's the logic I have as well. In fact, many tractors that use a single hydraulic pump have a priority valve that divides oil between remote and steering. It gives priority to the steering. I guess the JD design logic is that a tractor most likely isn't turning when the hydraulics are being operated near the system relief pressure. I guess all designs involve trade-offs. Some people would welcome extra speed during heavy lifts. I don't know if this JD design is your problem though.

Terry - I hear you. So, because you have the middle buster, can you just remove the tip and attach a narrow foot, and turn it into a subsoiler? Seems to me that would give you what you want, or darn close to it. Check with an implement dealer, and see if their variety of tips for subsoilers, etc. would work.

Traditionally, ag machinery is considered to be whatever year that it was sold - not when it was built. It wouldn't be all that unusual for someone to make a series of a thousand tractors one year and sell them over the next howevermany years. They would be new when sold. Design changes are typically running changes made during a model run and referenced by serial number. With an up to date parts book, you can look at the design changes on a tractor that you are considering and make a decision that way. At first it fooled me becuse tractors aren't "yeared" like cars with their distinct year/model changes. In fact, the better the tractor the longer you will see it in production with few changes year to year...and the harder it will be to tell what year it was sold. Conversely, a tractor can be an excellent one, but if it is only produced for a few years the rural community will view it with suspicion for decades.

Farmer, I've seen a number of these diff locks get sticky. Most of them are a foot pedal with a cam or bevel that pushes on the end of a rod which runs into the transmission. I've been able to fix several of them by taking the foot lever off (so I could get to the rod) and then squirting some penetrating oil down the length of that rod. Easy enough to do and you may want to try it. The rod itself usually has an internal spring which should be causing the rod to push out against the foot pedal.....this keeps it from engaging accidentally and also holds the foot pedal up.

EJ...I'm looking for a blower as well for my NH TC40D....I contacted a regional equipment rep...Meteor is made in Canada by a company called M.K. Martin Enterprises...I don't think they have a web site. I had a 8' Loftness blower on the back of my 886 (now departed) that was built better than any other blower I have seen. They make smaller blowers of the same grade construction, but they are more expensive than the Meteor - don't know if it can be justified. Loftness does have a web site if you want to check them out. In any case, I going to bet I can find a motivated dealer to cut a great deal on a blower on a 90 degree summer day in the near future......

I'm planned to mow a two acre lot using a JD 4100 HST with 60" inch belly mower until a salesman told me he thought it would be better to go with the 54" mower. I've got a Gravely with 50" mower now, so if I can't use the 60" on the JD 4100 I'll have to go to a larger tractor. I mow the lot at about 4" height now and rarely does it get over 7" before I cut it. Anyone got experience with the 4100 with 60" mower? thanks in advance!

I also have a 4200 and purchased a 60" KK tiller from TSC for $999 this spring. I have heavy Alabama clay with limestone rocks - I have to go slow but the tractor doesn't seem to have a problem with the tiller. Word of caution - the slip clutch that was supplied with the tiller was adjusted tight, you may want to back off the tension on the slip clutch bolts before you hit your first bolder and the tiller tries to go airborne or stalls the tractor.

I am contemplating a purchase between the TC29D/33D and the JD 4200. I believe the TC29 is a touch more HP than JD. The NH stuff is cheaper than the green, but is it as good or is it better? Any thoughts or suggestions on which is a better buy? TC29D is $13.7K,HST, no SS, no access. price ok?

I recently purchased and used a JD 2R FlexiPlanter. It works very well and it suited for compacts. It flexes over uneven terrain. I planted 1 acre of sweet corn.

Thanks guys. Very good information. I've always been sure that this is the best place to be for people who want to understand how their tractors actually work, and this thread is one of the reasons why. Regarding my various deficiencies: I guess I generalized from my single example. The glow plugs for my 1710 are in the pre-combustion chamber. I also succumbed to the risks of thinking--as is common for me. I figured that if composition occurs in the pre-combustion chamber, then it makes sense to heat that particular area. Yes, I'm at risk for turning my thinking into rules and even natural laws--should have been a politician I guess. Regarding cold starting, I probably was comparing apples and oranges--my pre-heated indirect injection with direct injection farm tractors and no pre-heat. Anyway, when I bought the tractor, people kept telling me how much trouble I'd have starting it in the winter. That just didn't happen. -0F starts are two hours on the block heater, 15-30 seconds pre-heat and it takes right off. I do use 0W-30 oil though. I figure these winter-starting horror stories must come from somewhere. Interesting comment about the compression ratios. It reminded me of something I heard. Somewhere I heard about a late 50's engine that could run on gas or diesel. There was a way to change the compression ratio by opening valves to false chambers in the head. I believe this was supposed to be a way to eliminate the 'pony gas' engines that were sometimes used to start diesels at that time. No matter what our opinions on direct vs. indirect injection, I guess we all should be thankful diesel engine design evolved, and that most of us are using modern diesels.

All (used very loosely) can have the fuel ratio increased. HOWEVER unless you run light loads (in which case no need for more power) you SHOULD have a pyrometer (measures exaust temps), so you do not melt down the heads on a heavy load. Temps can climb to 1000 degree +. When fuel was cheap and HP expensive most farmers and trucks got more power thru the pump. You would see a black plum when plowing or chopping. If you are out on the road you might notice older big trucks on hills or starting to move thru the gears with heavy black smoke, same thing. (Federal laws and DOT inspections, plus heavy fines are cleaning up the trucks). The new electronics and federal laws have complicated the adjustments issues somewhat.

I appreciate your replys. I would use the tractor in similar ways you do. I have 40 acres and it is hilly and would use it for skidding some logs, brush hog mow about 10 acres once a year. Grade a long drive etc. I agree 10,000 is too much although it does have a cab w/ air conditioning, which I don't need would rather have a loader. Called a dealer for a price on a new 3340 and was quoted $19,000. I too am knocked out by the sticker shock of all these new tractor prices. If you know of anymore good deals such as you bought or decide to sell yours [doesn't sound likely] please let me know. How did you find yours ? On the web or locally? What's the difference between the Standard and HD Bucket on the 16A/17A Loaders. How do you tell - are the through-holes for the accessory bolt on edges a give-away?

LLoyd you got a screaming deal. Not many like that around. A guy could get old trying to come across another one. Congratulations. I think that 3500 for a bare YM135D is a little high, but condition is everything. It would probably go pretty fast for 3000 if it is clean. The tractor has an advantage in that it is a US imported Yanmar - not grey market. Which means that parts are available in this country, also English literature and still some old dealers around. That is probably why the price is higher. US model Yanmar prices vary widely depending on if there is a quality shop in the area (like in Denver) that still likes to service them. I think that some of the YM135s had hour meters, but most did not. It is a small tractor. It is really dated now, but they were pretty tough units. Personally - and much as I like Yanmars - I'd rather spend twice as much and get about 4 times the tractor.
