Other than your testing the compression. What is wrong with it that caused you to check the compression?

What model and year Kubota would help if a dealer responds. Have you looked at all the linkage and sensors?

I don't think I have ever seen a used Gator without damaged plastic somewhere (including my own) and also my neighbors 4100 has cracked plastic here and there.

Not a corvette expert or anything but thought those bodies are pretty tough. But it's easy to forget some part of a ator is plastic and stand or lean on it, or you a 4100 a little to much like a dozer.

How did this turn out. Know it is an older thread but I have a 96 MF 231 with 2 wires from tractor and several onboard the old alternator but no wiring diagram with new one and only 2 posts. I posted a new thread before finding this one. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

I have a MF 231 made in 1996. The alternator went out and all the new ones look to only have 2 terminal posts. The old one had several wires but just 2 from the tractor, the rest were on board the alternator I believe regulator or something. Fairly sure the red wire goes to the larger terminal and the other wire to the smaller. Have read in other forums about making sure a wire goes back to the battery. Nothing has been modified or changed with regards to this problems. Thanks in advance for any advice.

You make some good points there.

When I do a car engine compression test I always make sure the throttle is held wide open. I completely neglected to do this in this situation and given how close d the butterfly is to get the idle speed down for smooth gear engagement, I'm sure the closed throttle restricted the intake air to produce good compression values.

I believe the horse power rating for the CX Kawasaki is like 8 or 9hp so It pretty much loafs along.

Given how little maintenance I believe my unit was given over at 640 hours, I guess I am looking for trouble. I am sure it never got a transmission fluid change, and I don't know when the order was changed.

I was willing to take a chance given the purchase price, and hopefully everything will be fine. It is a learning process.

Do not know that tractor but if it has any safety cut offs I would look there. On my tractor I get that symptom if I have just slightly move the PTO lever just getting off the tractor when I park it. I jiggle everthing thing to fix, lift off seat etc. and that gets it back.

I would check fuses and take tester to all wires going to the mtr. under left side of seat.

I changed my Trans Fluid yesterday (also the engine oil and adjusted my valves).

The brake is already lots better.

I am surprised when I asked at the dealer Saturday they didn't mention a friction modifier was available! The suggested three complete drains and refills w/ HyGard.

I was wondering if limited-slip additive would work, but if JD makes one, I'll just buy some next time I am in to pick up parts (My JD dealer seems to stock no CX utility Gator parts-just tractor, lawn tractor, and ATV parts).

Reassuring that at 650 hrs I should have plenty of hours left before any serious service is required.

I've put 10hrs on the machine now (I had a LOT of stuff to do on our property stacked up to do, and the Gator made easy work of it), and about to get into the machine a bit.

It makes rattly sounds at low rpm, kind of like loose sheet metal parts are rattling/banging around (NOT from the engine or transmission, maybe the CVT pulley mechanism). Once engaged in gear above idle, the sounds go away, and they are worse at idle in neutral. I've had snow machines that sometimes would make similar (though much less) noise from their centrifugal clutch mechanism.

I will do a valve adjust, since I don't think I have as much compression as I should (less rotational hesitation while cranking than I would expect), and if teh clearances have closed up, it could affect that, but the engine seems to have plenty of power- I barely need off-idle to move it around the place, though it's level and not much of a challenge. I will crank it w/ a compression gauge before I adjust the valves to see it it makes a difference.

Strangely, the engine requires absolutely no choke to start (if you dare pull it out even briefly, it appears to flood the engine), and you just have to crank several seconds until it starts, and then it runs smoothly as soon as it fires. There is no way to adjust the idle mixture I can find. The idle screw isn't slotted, nor does it have a proprietary profile as do my various 2-cycle carbs for which I have tools to fit. It's a smooth disk with no visible way to get a hold of it to adjust.

I don't think my CX was "well-loved" by its nursery shop owners given that the plastic body is dead-dull (zero shine), one black fender trim is missing, and both seats were destroyed (by sun it would appear), so I ordered a set of after-market seats (the local JD dealer wanted almost $500 w/ tax for a pair), not to mention it was left unserviced for at least a year or two to where the varnish deposits in the fuel pump and carb were solid (to where they had to be picked at and scraped to loosen them to where carb cleaner would start to dissolve them even a little).

On the valve adjustment, is there an easy view-able timing mark to set the crankshaft at when adjusting the valves, or do you just find TDC on the compression stroke (say, w/ a screw driver inserted in the spark plug hole to locate TDC)?

I don't have any manuals (yet) so do you happen to remember the intake and exhaust valve clearances for setting (cold, I assume)?

My parking brake handle is frozen tight, which I assume is the inner cable rusted/corroded tightly to the outer sheath since the handle won't pull out even 1/16th", though our property is pretty level. The foot brake is effective though makes a horrible screech which I attribute to a rusted friction surface until I find otherwise.

BTW, does the front cowl/hood lift up? Between the cup holders there is what appears to be a hand-hold, and it appears that is how one accesses the headlights. One is loaded with dead bug carcasses (I suspect one or more got in and had a LARGE family in there), and I'd like to remove them.

The new valve covers have a screw-on filler plug, and are metal, not plastic, which makes for a better seal at the gasket base. Mine blew out a few years ago, and I never found any cause. After replacing the valve covers, I've never had another issue.

Wanted to bring this back to the top to thank you for the tutorial. I broke down my primary clutch today and came apart just like it is suppose to! Swapped out old rollers with new ones from Gatoraider. Put it back together with red locktite and reinstalled on the machine. Thank you again so much.

I know this is an old post, but just found the discussion. I have an 04' silverado 6.0 2500hd extended cab w/260?k miles on it. I pull trlr. w/things from building supply stores or boat/trlr.. I have found that keeping it around 65-70 i get around 17.5-18 mpg. and it needs new plugs. I think keeping my foot out of it so much in the hills we have here and don't use cruise much, better fuel milage. I do need to have the stepper mtr. for oil pressure gauge replaced, i just watch temp. and check oil every time i drive it.

I am needing the "Pawl" (my term) that connects the steering shaft (TX16022) to the steering motor (TX16053) on my Long 460 with Hydrostatic steering.<br>
This part is splined on the bottom to fit in the motor and has a male tab on top that fits in the steering shaft.<br>
I have not found a parts diagram for this steering system but have found the steering motor and shaft which I don't need at this time.<br>
