When a tractor or vehicle sits for a long period of time, starters that have solenoids tend to stick. Take a wooden or soft plastic screw driver handle to tap around the solenoid or a not so destructive whack.

Another method is to put the tractor in neutral, engage the starter while something pushes the tractor back and forth in a rocking motion.

Solenoid starters are becoming a thing of the past. Offset Gear Reduction is the way to go to avoid this problem.

Thanks for the comments. Never had a heater but I go short distances so the oil often does not get warm. As for the noise doesn't sound like a stick noise as it's a high pitched continuos sound, but I'll check it.

Gator was running about 5 min. and then started bogging down. I cleaned the fuel filter and now I can't get fuel to fill the filter bowl, I tried to pump the transfer pump but no luck.

yocsr the title you had caught my attention today as it was the picture of the day when I signed on. Can easy tell you the difference if you wish to know: is it tax deductible? If yes then a tool (in this case a tiller) if not a toy. Now that you are using it for hire (neighbor) it probably will be a tool. lol

I did major rebuild of an old boom mower this pass summer and replaced the flail mower on it with one I was running on excavator which turned out to be same physical size as was on the boom mower. <br>

The mower was a self contained unit for 3pth and pto power. In the rebuild I removed the hyd valves and ran the boom cylinders directly to the tractor remote hydraulic system and just used the pto to power the cutter head. Thought this is great all controls now at finger tip and mower power to the cutter head. All went well to the pump blew which may have happened before the cutter jammed causing the jam or may have happened when it jammed due to pressure build up. <br>
When I found the read of the pto pump pouring oil standing there I realized no relief valve in the system now, dumb. Just did not think of that in the replumbing of the system. <br>

So now need to replace the pump and need to install relief valve. My question is very simple to ask, currently the hoses run from the pump (pressure out side) to the mower head with nothing in the line. It is cut on and off by the pto engaged or disengaged only. Am I correct I need to install a short hose from the pump to the relief valve and then install the hose on to the cutter on the pressure side and on the other side of the relief valve it needs to tie into the return line from the cutter head so the fluid can run through the relief valve back to the tank if the cutter gets jammed or for any reason the pressure gets to high?<br>
Well there is one other question how do you know what pressure relief valve you need? Know it needs to be lower than max for the pump but would the motor on the cutter have a max pressure stamped on it also? Have to remove cover to access it. thanks<br>

Murf it is hard if possible at all to help someone who does not want to accept it. We all have Jeffs to cross out paths in this life and maybe at times we are the Jeffs.

Ok, with more information now it seems very clear you have contamination in the hydraulic system and have some debris in the 3pth circuit.

Unfortunately unless you can get that debris to find its own way out your only real option is a major tear down to clean it all out.

thanks for coming back and posting what was the fiz. I just bought a 4100, and am reading everythning I can about the 4000 series tractors, and the sorts of things that go wrong.

lespaulsf, I've got the same problem with my 2360. I believe it is seepage around the two stems. My main problem is the gasket on that thin metal cap is failing, at just 440 hrs on a 1996 model. I plan next week to unhook the linkage and remove the two holding fasteners and make a new gasket. I think the leak around the stems may be from deteriorated "O" rings. I will let you know as soon as I remove that cap. If it is "O" rings it may be a simple fix but you will need to get or make a gasket. You can get the "O" rings at harbor freight or any hydraulics repair shop for must less than replacing or rebuilding a pump.

I'll let you know. Like you I have to save up for the big expenses like a pump or mother will have my hide. //Ken

Murf, I just had these injectors rebuild by the recommended re-builder on the east coast. The reason I had them rebuilt was because of this problem and since rebuilding the problem is the same.<br>

Yesterday, 3/24, I de-carboned the engine with misted water thinking a small piece of carbon was holding the exhaust valve open but that wasn't the case either.<br>
<br>
For those, like me, that have forgotten... [/i] [/b] you can de-carbon a gas or diesel engine with plain water.[/b] [u] For example, my 2003 lincoln towncar was beginning to lose gas mileage even though it had new spark plugs, wires and coils and the gas is non-alcohol from the same station. Mileage had dropped to 21.8 mpg on cruise set at 75 on the interstate. After d-carboning it has slowly returned to 24.1 as it previously ran.<br>

On normal operating temperature gas engines you can remove a vacuum hose going into the intake and it will suck the the water from a bottle. Run the engine at 1200 to 1400 rpms doing this... the water turns to steam and will remove carbon from valve stems egr going to exhaust and your car will run better. Old time mechanics use to do this all the time on carbon-ed up engines. They never bought the expensive products for cleaning engines.<br>
<br>
you can de-carbon a diesel by misting water in the air intake hose. disconnect the air intake hose going the the head intake and with the engine warm idling at 1000 or so rpms mist water with a plastic spray bottle. To me easier than on a gas engine.<br>
<br>
Murf back to my issue. It seems the fuel wants to detonate as it is exiting the head to the muffler.<br>
I did find a pin leak at the high pressure pump where nr 2 cylinder hp line connects. I've got to get new copper seals and secure this and I'm hoping it will start running again.<br>

I've often heard the slightest leak on one of the hp injector lines will keep an injector from igniting correctly.<br>
