I have a Shibaura SL1603 Stiger. I know how the joy stick works to raise or lower, but don't know the side to side, and what the other three adjustments are. I know one of them makes the lift go down only in two positions and up and down in one position. The other two I don't know. I think one is to set the lower limit on the lift. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for letting us know results--we all learn from those. It's nice to hear of good resolutions. Belt length is actually pretty critical in a variable speed drive, even though it may not seem that way when the system is not running. As the belts wear, they get narrower. This makes them appear longer, and the drive will lose capability to shift through its entire range. Likewise a belt too short will affect proper operation of the variable clutches. Perhaps the belt you replaced was not the proper one for your machine.

I probably have more wondering about our Gator than any other piece of equipment. Ours was running good, really great and my wife pulls it out of garage and it wants to show it bad side. Ended up having to replace the spark plug. It has gotten to where when my wife drives it the plug often die. Need to see if she is over choking the engine causing that.

Screw on cap? That sounds like the externally threaded cylinder. If that's what you have, the rest should pull out.

White smoke is indicative of a cylinder getting fuel but not in such a way that it can combust.

It's been my experience that a missing cylinder and puffing lots of white smoke means an injector stuck open and it wasn't getting anatomized blast of fuel, rather disturbed that could not ignite properly.

The red wire that goes to the switch is always hot and is one of the fusible links on the starter. If it isn't hot at the switch the link must be bad or the wire is broken.

I would second replies re: condensation. I've seen it many times. Air-cooled engines in particular will run hot enough to boil water out of the oil. I'd run it for a few minutes and then look at dipstick again. If oil remains clear, you should be fine. Was there also goop on the filler cap? This stuff does tend to accumulate towards top of the engine.
