a MF 471 is a 70 H.P Tractor and all can be overloaded. Massey-Ferguson makes a Great Tractor and not many people have a problems with them,unless they have been abuse. And i would say this tractor has been overloaded and abuse.
I would suggest to get a bigger Tractor with more Horse power.And a Massey-Ferguson,I love Red Massey-Ferguson Tractors,been using them since 1957. and still have a 1959 -65 Massey that runs as a dream but it has been taken care of and well service.And never abuse.

Well it takes: fuel, compression and air for a diesel to run.

Quick suggestion: check the air intake and be sure it is clear and get a helper to spray wd 40 in short burst in the air intake as you crank the engine. If it will start and run while the wd40 is being sprayed but stops when you stop spraying it you have fuel issue.

Are you sure fuel it getting to the injectors? You may want to very slightly loosen the tube to the injector and cover with rag to see if fuel it getting there. If not then search for reason. Could be clogged filter, cut off system is not letting fuel through.

On the air check to be sure no pest nest in from the air intake to the filter. Should not be past the filter.

Trust nothing wrong with the engine to cause low compression or system out of time.

A diesel tractor needs two things to run:fresh diesel fuel and compression. When you crank it does it smoke from the exhaust stack? It should be, if it is not have you checked the fuel filter? If the filter is good loosen one of the injector lines and crank it till fuel comes out of the line, it may be air locked up.

Thanks everyone who answered my call for help. You were absolutely right Gatormaki I had dropped the square key into the jack and when I moved the jack it fell on the cement floor. I repositioned the square key and put the tire back on and it now works great. :-) THANK YOU.

This may sound odd, but check the fwd & rev pedal mounting bracket. The bolts can loosen over time and flex enough that you won't get the speed that you would like.

As for the mower, it only works well at 3000 RPM engine speed. But engage and disengage the clutch mechanism at a lower RPM, say 1800-2000, then once engage bring it up to 3000 RPM.

That "looping" coil, is for the cooler. If you take a look at yours, being a DT model or gear shift, you probably won't see it. Take a look on the HSD/HST models, or Hydrostatic units, and you will see them. Keep in mind that hydraulic fluid under working pressure produces significant heat....needless to say, it needs to be cooled or it will burn and be useless, as it will thin out to nothing leaving you stranded. Some units realize an actual cooler, such as one may ad to an RV or tow vehicle to keep the tranny fluid cooler for proper operation. This would be evident by looking at the radiator, and seeing what looks like a second one...just a cooler.

You do have to hold it on those models! They are a variable use as when the temps are not that cold you may only need a ten second use vs when cold you would need to use it longer.

I have thought on your issue and have reread each of your post and still think it could be fuel issue. If electrical then the choke being pulled should have no effect. If air restriction it might. Look at the inline filter very carefully. You took it out to check the flow. It is possible there is trash in the carb or bad float even with rebuild.

How does it run before it cuts off? And it will crank right back up. One other thought, spark plugs. My in laws had a Ford 601 that could be very finicky at times and an old school mechanic work with the carb a good bit and found issue to be the plugs. Best I remember he said when an engine floods it can kill the plugs. I think the issue on that tractor was the carb would act up and not sure how or why but the plugs were affected. I would pull and check them to see if they show any problems. kt

Somethings make a lot of sense in crops to how they vary across this country but hay would seem to be about the same to me. Hay is a decent cash crop here and we have shipped to Texas two years or was it three ago with their drought. That followed drought here a few years earlier and hay shipped here from out west.

Art White finally got back and had a look there is no sign of a relief valve under or any where near the oil filter. Haven't been able to find anything resembling a relief valve. Took the filter off the engine to look right under the mount for the filter. While I had the filter off thought I might crank the engine over to pump some oil out without going through the filter. With the fuel shut off I cranked a couple of turns and pumped some oil out into a rag. supply looked good so I replaced the filter, started the engine. No noise. I thought maybe some foreign object was in the oil gallery and causing the noise and when i had pumped oil out without the filter whatever it was got pumped out at the same time. After running for 5 minutes the noise returned. Really getting desperate. Where can I get a manual for this engine, it has cast onto the side of the block 653 cc. Only identificationI have found so far. Thanks for all the suggestions

Got a question. With the boom extended full out it sometimes doesn't want to pull up. If I curl it back it will raise ok. The other cylinders work fine. The hoe runs off tractor hydraulics. Is this a cylinder problem or a pump pressure problem? I'm thinking cylinder because of being an isolated issue.

I have a couple of issues with my Instrument panel. 1st thing is my digital hour meter has taken a crap. Anyone know how to fix this?<br>
The Tractor has under 500 hrs and I really would like to see the meter again somehow.<br>
It does show sometimes but only in broken lines, not enough to read.<br>
The other is my Gas guage decided to stop working. It vibrates like it's stuck or something when I turn the key on. It was working fine and then did this.<br>
Any help with either would be fantastic<br>
