My 4100 is about 10 yrs old with about 500 hours on it. Light duty. my loader is not responsive on start up but works better as it warms up. At its best it is not close to what is used to be. I have changed filters, cleaned the intake screen, etc. I was using it yesterday and decided to add some hyd fluid (JD spec) and found air was blowing out of the fill opening for the hyd fluid. I added fluid and put the cap back on but the tractor would not move, the bucket would not move and steering was hard. I checked the fill cap and it was not tight and air was blowing out around the cap. I tightened the cap and all started working again but slow as before. Whats going on here? Any suggestions?

First it has been a week so you may have this solved and second I may not be any help, but hope so.

Normally you would shift PTO lever just like great shift with clutch depressed and not all the way out. No idea what type of PTO clutch this tractor has but most likely there is either a simple shift button or short lever if hyd or electric shift and you use the clutch peddle if manual clutch is what used.

If you are not sure which then look around the lift levers for a short lever for the PTO and if nothing there then with the tractor off work the clutch pedal very slowly releasing it from fully depressed. If manual normally maybe an inch or so of pedal travel engages the PRT clutch and you usually can feel it every so slightly if you are paying attention. You should be able to shift the PRT without ever fully disengaging the travel gears.

As to the pto cutting of if the lift is raised to a certain point "I" have not heard of that before. While in some ways it is easy to think that would be a good idea for such as a cutter but at same time when using a PTO pump and pull sprayer my lift is always fully raised and I have my pto running and would find it strange not to do so on any tractor for same reason, running a pump for sprayer if nothing else.

If you have those super aggressive ag tires that most of them have you will probably need new smaller rims as well.

I just bought a hydraulic top link from Agrisupply. It came complete with hoses and quick couplers. I went with the one with check valves to prevent drift. It ran $265.00 including shipping. The best inexpensive thing I've purchased. It cut hookup time in half, and has made working with the box blade a breeze. My finish mower is a woods RM59 which runs front skids and dual tail wheels. I use stop chains and setting it up to match the wifes cut on the JD 345 seemed like I was always a half link off one way or the other so it's always been trial and error. With the hydraulic top link it's quick and easy to match her cut. This is well worth it!

I can't think of any good reason why a compression test could not be run on a Kawi engine. If the machine was running when you put it away, I would look to the carb if you are now getting a good spark. You could almost do a compression test with your finger. Take both spark plugs out. Watch out for the spark leads and keep the throttle open. You'll feel it pushing out on the compression stroke.

If the old spark plugs were not all oily, your engine is probably OK. Even new engines will let some air past the rings on a leakdown test. Unless it has been blowing oil out the crank breather and fouling spark plugs, I'd try and get it running first. Let us know what you find.

Next time you get it hot take the clutch guard off the motor, put it in neutral, and rev the motor and see if the clutches are operating properly. Belt should move out on the motor clutch and move in on the transaxle clutch as rpms increase. Sounds like the motor clutch may be locking up.

Numbers are L-1746 for standard and L-1750 for the optional bucket. I'd say about 400 and you have a new bucket.

You would find it hard to beat the money spent.

My first comment is that there's 2,800 hours on a 30hp compact?

If it got good consistent maintenance it could still be in good shape, but the snow plow, 2 bottom plow and such points to some pretty heavy work.

IMHO the biggest factor will be price. If you can get it for the right money you'll be able to do some work on it and still be on the right side of things. It's been my experience though that sellers look at what other (extremely low hour garage queens) units go for and price it accordingly which is very high for a well-used unit.

Also you mention beef cattle, you should be aware that a 30 hp tractor won't move much of a load, so feeding round bales will be an issue.

Curt, several years ago you were seeking info on a spitting problem with your Ford 1700. Did you ever find out exactly what the problem was? I have a Ford 1700 diesel doing the same thing as yours did/is. It have 760 hours on it. Speculation is oil or diesel, but no for sure answer. Problem is worse at high RPMS, and when the tractor reachs operating temp. Any info you might have that would help narrow it down would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah. I've gotten a little deeper into it and I'm assuming the same. The thing that's throwing me off is when I switch the forward/reverse wiring the delay disappears but it's still weak in the higher ranges in reverse.

Thoughts of a three cylinder might mean it would be a good time to trade!
To find one in a bone yard might not be a bad thought to also gain the other parts needed for the conversion.
