Bob,

There are several companies that make rear PTO driven snow blowers. Try a Internet search, (I prefer Google.com).
I recommend a loader snow blade with overload springs such as the Curtis design at www.curtiscab.com.
The main advantage of a snow blower is that the snow is discharged far enough away from the driveway or walkway that it does not have to be moved again.
Also, I used my snowblower to clear large amounts of snow without the use of chains.

Tom it depends on how much they are going to charge you per hour. If it is a reasonable rate I would go for it. You have had use of the tractor for a year. Although I have seen posts here where the dealers traded even. Just be sure you are getting a tractor built this year with the new axle. If it would help have another dealer give you a price on trading in your tractor for a new one. The rent should be much less. Good Luck. Chris

You ask a number of questions without giving enough information. First who manufactures this unit? What model number? Horsepower, 2WD or 4WD? Is it a lawn/garden tractor or tractor? You mention hydraulic tiller, so do I assume this unit has no pto? Anyway, if you could fill in the blanks we maybe able to help.

Well I knew I could expect good advice and I got it. Now you guys have given me something else to think about. As Roger and Jim had mentioned and I did know but never really consider, was use of vegetation for erosion control. I never really considered a low growing plant, I only see weeds that grow 24" seemingly overnite.
Murf, thank you for the calcium chloride idea, I suspected I needed to mix something in with the oodles of clay I own.
Mike, I do have a dip but need to incorporate some additional spots to relieve some water from the road. Currently the road is crowned with a ditch to one side, however, it still has some lengthy staight runs at a fairly steep grade. I will try to break this up with something on the order of a gravel covered french drain.

Again, thanks for all the ideas, and of course if anyone else or Murf, Roger or Mike have others ideas by all means chip in.

Glen, one other thing about tiller use. I'm not sure how big is too big for the 4100. I do know that it handles my 52" tiller very easily. But, if you should ever have ground that's too tough to till then either till with more soil moisture or use a moldboard plow or ripper to break up the ground before you till. I use front weights and the 4100 handles a 14" plow just fine. I do this every year anyway to reduce deep compaction (deeper than the tiller will go). For what its worth I have a 4100 gear model with a non-live PTO. Everyone cautioned that mowing would be a problem, yet I've never had a problem with either mowing or tilling. It's really a matter of being willing to clutch and find the correct gear for the job. As to the hydro being able to creep more slowly with a tiller- I don't know why anyone would want to go slower than 1st gear/low range. Any slower and you wouldn't be moving at all. Having said all of this-yes more HP and weight does make things go better, but the 790 was just too large to manuver around things on my lawn. The 790 tractor is very nice though, but I don't think fit or finish is any different than my 4100. (I do think that 790 fit and finish is far better than the larger 4000 series tractors. The 4100 didn't get in on the problems of the 4000 series like the other models did-different engineering and assembly location).

William, I like my tiltmeter, but naturally it's not a substitute for common sense. It's just another instrument to provide a little more information. And the manufacturer will tell you that you still need to consider the points that you've mentioned; dropping a wheel on the low side in a hole or soft spot, running over a rock, stump, etc. on the high side, and things such as that.

I am excited that somebody responded; I was afraid that everybody is tired of this kind of questions by now. Interesting, you mention Zetor. I grew up in Brno, Czech Republic, where Zetors are built and I was familiar with Zetors. These tractors used to be the best export article of the country and were one of the top in Europe. Of course with the communism all the products went downhill especially the quality. So I would be very cautious with Zetor unless someone has some good experience with it. What do you think about the stump pulling? How much HP do you need for that, >50? About the attachements, or is it implements, are they interchangeable? Can they be rented? Are there any 'fence post drill' attachments, I heard about augers?

Greg, you may know all of this, but others might not. Basic hydraulic motors come in gear, vane, and piston types. There are also some rotary piston types and hybrids. All of them have a lot in common with a hydraulic pump running backwards. The gear and vane types are most affordable, but have high run speeds and low starting torque. They are usually used with gearboxes to overcome this difficulty. A posthole digger needs a lot of torque. But if you could pick up one of the fancier hydraulic motors...maybe surplus....it would sure be a nifty installation. A key phrase is "percent of full torque available at start-up". Then compare with a PTO which is 90% of tractor engine torque - sometimes more, it depends on how the manufacturer rated the engine.

Right on, Murf. Last year my son-in-law mowed my pasture. I made the mistake of telling him it would mow as fast as his rear end could stand (I should have said as fast as MY rear end could stand because I looked out there and couldn't believe the speed he was running). When he finished, I had to re-weld the tail wheel bracket that he broke. And the tractor I have now is supposedly running 5 mph in mid-range and the time I mowed that 7 acres in 2.6 hours, I was using high-range about half the time because mid-range wasn't quite fast enough to suit me.

According to THE BOOK (highly recommended, see below), that tractor is worth from $2910 in fair condition to $3910 in premium shape. You'll have to decide how much the tiller is worth.

I am not sure how many people know this but KIOTI baught all of kubota's tooling a few years back, so basically a KIOTI is a Kubota. So it depends how you want to look at it do you want to buy a Kubota for less or buy the latest technology.

Can anyone help? I have been looking on Web for access to farm equipment price guide to evaluate selling price for the following: Near Reno, NV - 1978 Kubota compact tractor model B6100, 695hrs, 12HP 3 cyl diesel, 4WD w/ 3 forward & reverse each in HI/LO gear box, 3pt hitch and rear PTO. Thanks for the info. I am not sure what type of loader is on this one, but it is painted like the cub so i assume it is one of theirs. I am gonna try to offer them my tractor and 7k. I just bought this 284 with a great bend loader, for 7.5k, and it only has 1100 hours on it. I am gonna lose the tax money, but the tractor in question is at the same dealer that i bought the 284 from. Oh well. we will see. thanks
