After replacing three hard drives at home in the last three weeks I've had it with hard drives. Even "Enterprise" class drives don't last, million plus hour MTBF ratings notwithstanding. From now on I am only buying SSDs. They don't last, either, but at least they generally don't fail catastrophically. The time spent rebuilding takes too long, even with image backups.

I'm hoping that going to the trouble of stripping down the 361D engine block to take to the machine shop won't be waisted time and effort. Don't want to do all that just to have the guy see it up close and then tell me he can't fix it.

When the valve tappet broke, it ground down part of the block adjacent to one cylinder, thus causing a coolant leak and a sleeve and piston. I sure hope he can fix it. Would sure save me some time and money, I hope.

Frank, I too have never had the FEL off the tractor.

In fact most of the time I have my homemade utility bracket on instead of just leaving the FEL empty. I found that it never failed, as soon as I got the tractor more than 100' I found some reason I needed a trailer moved, or to pick up something. So I built the bracket. It's my picture # 18 shown below. Although I now have a dedicated set of forks, so I rarely use those forks much. I have lengthened them though, so they are very handy for things like gathering and carrying brush.

I also made up a gin pole that goes into the trailer hitch in it, with that I can reach up about 12' and out beyond the front wheels by about 10'.

In fact I even used it to retrieve a nieghbours stallion that broke through the fence line and was running free up & down the road. Three of us managed to get a rope halter and stout lead-line on him and I tied him off to the trailer hitch and backed up 'leading' him home, he didn't like it much, but didn't have a lot of choice either! ;)

Have your son stay away from streams or rivers during this time of year. I have seen some really dangerous ice buildups on rivers. Small streams might be ok, like knee deep, but river ice is really dangerous as is streams, in fact, plan on going through in these places, it is almost impossible not to unless you are in the high mountains, or ND, MT, SD, or any of the Northern states. but you get springs under the ice that will make it thinner and currents can do it.<br>
Trout are a little slower in the winter but still very catchable. I got back from ice fishing Sunday, but am heading out again this weekend. Ice on the lake I was fishing was about 28". My son and I went halfers on an Ice Auger, it is wonderful, he accused me of drilling hundreds of holes instead of fishing. My son is given to exaggerations. But, I will admit, after all these years of using a hand auger, this 10" power auger, I feel like Tim on Tool Time, Arrr arrr arrr :-)<br>
You can use pretty much the same stuff you use during the summer, its just harder to cover much area.<br>
I use meal worms, wax worms, jigs and bait, like minnows, etc. I raise my own worms so I always have them and night crawlers.<br>
I have my best luck during the winter with Meal and Wax worms. Use a small jig, like a Finkee tipped with the meal or wax worm. On the wax worm I pop his head off so he leaks into the water. Tell him to tie the jig on so it sits straight in a horizontal line (perpendicular to the fishing line) and slowly jig the head up and down. Change depth on a routine basis until you find the level the fish are running. Depth of the water is not always a key issue as most of my fishing is between 3 to 12 feet. Kokanee is a little different, you usually find the schools in deeper water because of the way the schools stack up. I have talked with some who claim good success on panfish and Crappie jigs, get the small ones. On the Finkee jigs, they are usually 1/64 or 1/80 ounce heads. Colors here are light green, orange, light blue, pink. Another thing is little flutters as I call them, I get them from Michaels, Hobby Lobby etc, they are little earring making pieces that I tie on to make a flashing attachment above my bait to bring the fish in as they are nearly as curious as cats. Tell him to tie the flutters on with a Rapala loop so they move well.<br>
Anyhow, be really careful on creeks and rivers, I just stay away from them in the winter, at least in Colorado. The vapor off the rivers give false ice layers in the winter, I just can't stress enough how hazardous it is.

I also have a JD 1640 4WD with SG2 cab, JD loader, this was the smallest output tractor in the 40 series JD's such as 1840, 2040, 2140, 2140S,& then 2250, 2450, 2650 & the range topper 2850 came after it.

My 254 has an Agpro loader, no P.S. I really do not notice a steering issue. It is hooked to tractors hydraulic system,it all works great.

I would greatly appreciate some opinions on this! I have a JD gator 620i that I have been working on for the last week and a half. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to working on vehicles. I know just about the basics of troubleshooting. I had just changed the battery and had it up and running fine. I drove over to the barn and was going to put gas in it and i left the engine running as I did so. it shut off as I was filling up. I am wondering if I could have possibly put bad gas in it so I syphoned the gas out and put in new. It still would not work. I thought maybe I flooded it so I took the spark plug out and it smelled of gasoline. I cleaned the spark plug. It didn't work. Do I need to get a new one? Is it possible that their is gas in the oil? Keep in mind that it was working perfectly before I put gas in it.

Frank, I'm blessed with a really flat driveway here, one of the advantages of living in a river delta. About half of it is paved, the other half fine ground limestone screenings.<br>

For your slope I'd be trying a different angle with the ice, IMHO & experience, leaving the ice in place means a better surface come spring. My driveway at the farm is exactly the same, it gets direct sun only in the morning. I've found an old fertilizer spreader full of sand which is (or has been) wetted with CaCl or MaCl works the best. The CaCl makes the sand bite into the ice and it's like driving on sandpaper. Even subsequent plowings or snowblowings won't take it off, it's stuck in place till the next melt.<br>

Even just a hand sprayer to wet the ice just as you're sanding makes a big difference.<br>

Unless the oil is diesel rated (all 15/40 ones that I've seen are, though I have no idea why) you should change it more often than the manual says.

I recently purchased a new Gator TS with out a power bed lift. I own an older Gator with a power assist and was going to put the old power assist on the new one. It works fine on the old Gator but when I put it on the new one it will not respond. I have checked and when I hit the switch I am getting 12 volts to when the wires connect to the lift assist motor. Any suggestions?

Filling to the top can stress tires when driving (rather than crawling) over bumps (especially is carrying a load) because liquid is non-elastic. And a second purpose of ballasting is to lower the center of gravity, and some tractor rears are pretty high at the top. <br>

Common practice is filling to about the top of the rim. There are various methods of assuming when it's reached there, and tire guys know these tricks.<br>

With CaCl, unless the valves are non-corroding, I'd have them replaced before they fail and leak (which they will in time).

My Long 460 manual says the final drive takes 2L of 80W90 gear oil. Your pic shows tons of caked greasy dirt. I would clean it all off, see if that hole is caused by damage or if it had a screw plug that fell out. Cleaning will also tell you what that "drain hole" on the right really is. I would be concerned about the condition of the gears since it has been without oil for unknown amount of time. The level of wear might help you decide what to do.

I've had my 460 for less than a year, do alot of my own wrenching, but I'm not a professional mechanic.

Typical, yes I agree.

However during snow removal season they can fail in as little as 1 hour, I've seen it first-hand......

Vibration can also be a factgor with steel lines.
Is there perhaps a clamp or fastrener that isn't supporting the line properly?
I has somewhat the same issue with a steel line on a combine which was a real bear to get it out and back in. After a couple of those episodess we used a common hydraulic hose and our problem went away.
At just the right engine speed something was causing the line to vibrate, but only at that speed, above or below that engine RPM it didn't vibrate. When it did vibrate you could hardly see the line it vibrated so hard.
I;m not certian that this is your problem, but just throwing it out as a possibility.
