i have a john deere gator that has power but when i climb a hill it starts to blow pure white smoke but stays runing and when i press the pedal it just wont move until it gets out that smoke. im wondering if the motor is bad or what. i was also wondering a more powerful motor and has more speed could i possable change it out with a desiel or a more powerful kawaski motor. if i dont have to then whats that smoke all about and that power gone when i hill climb with only 3 rolls of barbed wire in the bed...

You'll have to troubleshoot from the 2/4 control to the front wheels to see what's not connecting.

Yes, the car hoods work good. We use to pull huge rocks sitting on a 1958 Chrysler Imperial hood. If you get a hood, go with a old one because they are WAY heavier.

for those interested, I've found a potential fix for this.
This L2800 is equipped with a hydraulic pressure relief valve located under the deck on the right side, basically just under my right foot.
In the manual it states that there are shims for this valve that can be added to (I assume) put more pressure on the valve to stay closed and only relieve pressure when there's overloading pressure. If the spring on this valve isn't strong enough to keep valve closed, it'll let a little hydraulic fluid through(?)..allowing 3pt hitch to dip, then the pump 'tops it off' to return to previous level. This is why my tractor hitch is bumping, I believe.

I'm going to either shim this valve or replace (and keep old one) and buy the shims in case it happens again.

I'll come back after and let y'all know how this turns out.

Selling for scrap metal is fast and simple, however you may make more money selling it for parts on ebay or such. At least the buckets and cylinders depending on their condition.

You will have to remove the crankshaft to do the job, so yes you will be removing the cover, water pump, big ends, etc. You will (probably) need new gaskets. Whether or not the main bearing is damaged you will see once the crankshaft is out.

The main bearing is just a bush which is pressed in. You might need to take the engine to a machine shop to get the old bush pressed out and new one replaced.

Don't be dismissive about the tech. manual - it is the Bible when it comes to Gator maintenance! [b]Provided you follow the manual EXACTLY you shouldn't have any problems.[/b]

I'd suggest you read the appropriate section(s) a couple of times before you start and print off the page about the order of insertion of the crankcase bolts and their torque settings. Likewise, the torque settings for the big ends.

Don't forget to check the oil breather. You'll probably need a new gasket here also.

$I will try to send you the shutoff schematic and troubleshooting procedure on PDF document. The shutoff solenoid has two coils, one is used as a kick-in and the second one is the holding coil. The kick-in is a high current coil and should be energized for a fraction of a second, if it stay on it will burn. That sequence is controlled by the electronic board located under your seat. One way to check it out is to connect two light bulb on the shutoff valve connector, you will normally see on bulb lit very shortly and the second one stays on. Good luck John$ John Deere 4110 Manual

BTW- Kawasaki 290's themselves are excellent industrial quality engines. As they're also pressure lubricated you can get an oil filter kit if it doesn't have one. Not necessary I guess unless you drive stuff to the boneyard which I do.

Lastly, make sure the idle doesn't creep up and cause grinding when you put it in gear. The transaxle is not something you want to fool with $ wise.

I bought a different chipper. See the following post after yours. The poster makes it sound simple. My recollection of the machine in question seems to need to remove LOTS of bolts to even get close to the blades. Either he or I am confused on which machine we are talking about.

I like the reverse tine tillers as it is like making a pass and a half. They don't like stones as well as a normal unit as they will bring stones over the top and jam up under the top.

It is alright if you are on your own garden and pick stones or do not have many stones.

They do a better job in the first pass or second pass.

That's a good point...if the muffler is plugged by carbon, rust, or a loose baffle, it would have those same symptems.
