Greg, I did the same thing you are two years ago: found a 72" flail for $100. Installed new belt, PTO shaft and bearings. Ran and cut great---until I went to turn. The roller made torpedo-like gouges everytime I turned (6 acres of rolling berms, ditches, trees and landscaping and two ponds to deal with). So I invested another couple hundred bucks making a carriage like a towable finish mower, only it was still 3-pt (got rid of the roller). Made 4 casters from an airport luggage carts from 1/2" plate and 1" grade bolts as the pivots. First time I used it I backed up like I normally would with the finish mower and bent the two rear casters --1/2" plate (design flaw perhaps). But I gave up on it and sold it for $150.

For the record not all flail mowers are "universal"---ones meant for cutting grass have blades made for it while those for cutting brush have flail hammers or choppers and not necessarily blades, per se. The nice thing about flail grass mowers is they are forgiving when the encounter an object like a stump, rock or other things that would destroy a rotary blade.

I have a Cub Cadet GT 1554. When I engage the clutch the blades will start spinning but when I start to mow and get in heavy grass it stops spinning. If I stop the blades will catch back up again but then if I start back they stop again.Is there a way to check to see if I am getting enough power to the clutch? How can I tell if I need a new clutch? Is there a way I can check it?

Just a thought - the belt has an arrow on it that is supposed to point towards the front of the machine.

You said you'd checked the spark, so I assume you are getting a good solid blue spark. In that case I'd suspect the carburettor, particularly the float valve. There may be a bit of crud holding it open and causing the engine to flood.Maybe the valve is worn out. The manual has a section on this. At least it's something you can check without taking the engine out.

Debshep, there is no need to start a new thread to reply to an old one, just click on the "reply" or "quote reply" button at the bottom of any post in the thread.

BTW, that fellow, graybeard50 that said he had it, only posted here 40 times in total, and the last time he was here was more than a year ago.

I wouldn't hold your breath on getting a reply, it looks like 6 or 7 others have asked also, with no indication they got it.

My experience supports Hardwood (or not, depending on how you look at it). Bought turf-tired yannie in 1980. Had a farm-tire shop put liquid in the rears. After a few years one leaked. Tire guys installed corrosion-proof valves, no problems since. I've never had occasion to wish the rears were lighter, although when I was thinking of taking them for rim restoration, that thought did occur to me.

If this is your first, they're not like cars in that most tractor owners do all of the routine servicing and some of the repairs. If you have little experience or wrench-smarts, you'll be dependent on a dealer for info and parts, and the closer the better. But if you are relatively self-reliant and are willing to take a bit of a chance, I'd suggest you go online to your local Craig's List and Kijiji and call up "tractors." You can also post a free "Item Wanted" notice.

Different brands have different inroads in market areas. You don't want to have the only NH within 100 miles, and there are others that work similarly and as well, such as Deere and Kubota, so be flexible.

When you get some likely possibilities, feel free to come back.

I like to keep the same vintage of attachments by model number for resale value.

Your worry over capacity is fine but I don't think it is with good reason as they have not had overall problems with their loaders like some of the makes available.

I realize that some manufactures have had issues but much of the moves were for a cleaner tighter design.

Well the manufacturers website lists a DMC500 High and a DMC500 Auto, so I'm not sure on that.

The weird thing is it has a manufactured dated on it of 2007.

But the manufacturers website hasn't been updated since 2003 either. I have emails out to them but havn't heard anything back.

Wally, rereading your post this AM wondered, what does the manual show for the "draft bolt" position? If it does not show it to be at the tops as you were told ask the dealership if they can provide a service bullentin or something in writing to show that. Not to be arguementive but if it has that much negative impact would think they have it shown somewhere.

I did not change the exhaust because it has to be removed everytime you raise the hood. It is simple to remove but also requires cutting a hole in the hood so i just decided to leave mine like it came.
The radio was easy to install. You have to remove the top cover on cab i think 6 or 8 bolts and someone to help set it off and back on is about all the help you would need. It is not heavey just large. The headliner has to be removed to install the speakers but it just clips in and is not hard to remove. The speaker kit comes with the radio face plate and also the speakers. All you would need is a radio. I had a extra Porsche radio and it fit right in even the pre wired plug fit the radio all i had to do was check for the hot wire and change one wire in the plug. I love my tractor and have not had any problems. I also have the standard seat and would like to try one that has the air ride. At times i think that would be a nice extra.

I have a B2710 and mine is about the same way. But for mine there is a damage shifter part in the transmission caused by load pushing against the rear pto shaft. Hope that is not your case.

Of course the simple is to be sure to lube all shifting linkage and work it. Be sure there are no sticks or such in the linkage or even a pin part of the way out catching. Have you tried turning the mid pto shaft by hand with the tractor off to be sure it rotates freely?

Thanks for the help. I haven't been up to my cottage but I'll be going next week and I'll fix the tractor then. I've gotten a service manual and it shows the positions of all the switches. The service manual has solved a lot of mysteries for me and the crank circuit is quite simple once you see it explained in the manual.

I recently went through this.
The grounding switch will get corosion in it and although you will have 12 volts the amps will not be there.
Remove the ground switch and take it apart. Then sand the contacts and put it all back on. this sould solve the problem. If not check all other conections again.
