no i was using a brushog and it was doing great then it hit a patch af grass about 5 feet tall and it would moe it high but when i lowerd it down to groung level it started slipping. I need to bail so hay and we started bailing when the bailer gets almost full it starts slipping. I just dont know alot about this tractor and i thank it can be adjusted but dont know how.

Hi there, i'm thinking about buying a massey 6170 1997. I have noticed it is breathing quite heavy from the breather pipe and there is the odd drop of oil coming from it. is this anything to worry about? is there any thing else that i should look out for?<br>

I don't know if you can buy a new Deere or any other brand combine as a "Plain Jane" anymore without all the electronic gizmo's.
My last combine was a Deere 9610 with an eight row cornhead and thirty ft. cutterbar, I think it was a 98 or 99 model. Last fall I rode with our tennant who had a new Deere with all the dodads, pretty amazing what all instant information it shows and stores in the computer on yield, moisture content, acres done, number of bushels harvested plus it steers itself. Hard to imagine what they will be like in ten years from now.
I didn't ask him what it cost, but I'm sure a quarter million wouldn't have bought it.

Thanks for the advise. Went down to my sons last night. Started at the seat interlock switch. Check the switch with an meter and the switch was working. Nexted checked to and had 12V at the plug. Upon further inspection of the plug it looked like the connector pins were corrided. So cleaned them up and wala it started.
It seems from reading past post that the early series had a LOT of electrical problems.

Just started working on my sister ford tractor. It's been converted to a 12 volt system and altenator. The previous users just did a terrible job of removing the old harness and components. I need a ACCURATE wiring diagram for a converted, 1953 Ford "Jubilee" tractor. If someone could please provide a link with good wiring diagrams, it would be a great help. Thanks

Typically true hydraulically controlled or powered steering (as opposed hydraulic assisted) consists of a rotary valve at the steering wheel which reacts to steering input when a twistable shaft inside the valve moves a cylindrical spool inside the valve. This principle is similar to the '70's-era Ford 4x4 pickup power steering, but no the same in design. Another modern example is a self-propelled mower or even a vacuum cleaner that moves when you push or pull the handle. When you stop it stops.

My somewhat larger tractor (new Holland TC33D hydrostat)has its own pump, filter and reservoir.

I'd be looking for a a plugged filter, low fluid level or even a pinched line.

There should be a process for pressure checking the system.

If the twistable rod (torque rod) inside the valve is bad, at least on my mid-size backhoe it cost me $700 for a rebuild. These units do wear out.

My Grandfather's brother, what ever relation that is to me had a steam engine and a "Seperator", as they called a threshing machine that he pulled from farm to farm in the late 1800's till in the 1930's. I have no idea what brand they were but my Dad said that it took a long time for the thing to get from farm to farm pulling the threshing machine down the road.
My grandfather's first tractor was a Fordson, and my Father's first was a "B" Farmall that he farmed 120 acres with. My first was a Super "M" Farmall, a giant compared to the "B".
I still have a "Cub" Farmall, in the same class as the little Deere in the picture, about 8 or 9 HP. I think. I get it out once in a while just to keep it limbered up.

I quit purchasing "consumer" grade equipment a long time ago. My rider is a zero turn Gravely 260Z, trimmer is a new Honda (gulp, the Lawnboy died after only 22 years) and my chainsaw is a Stihl, to name a few.

Point was made by a couple of others above, the lower end stuff is just that. It should cut decent for its lifespan, may be a blade issue. My neighbor's Murry was delivered with the blades on backwards (15 years ago). Man did that cut lousy :)

I also belive Art was agreeing. Back to OP I've bought 8 Kubotas in the past 6 years and getting ready to buy 9th. The HST is the tractor for me. With FEL it is absolutely the only tractor for me. Using one hand on steering wheel and one hand on the fel stick takes all of my hands so I don't have another hand for shifting. I remember in the 50's a car with an automatic transmission was an always probably going to tear up but no one thinks that way now after a few decades of proof. Believe the Kubota HST has a proven record of dependability. Never talk to that salesman again because I also believe he didn't have what you wanted or he had his own personal tractor for sale that he was trying to sell so he could get an HST.

I have a Cub Cadet 1720, manufactured in October of 1991. I have made adjustments to the bolts at the front axle to take up slack but still have a great deal of play. It was suggested that the axle bolt bushing is worn out. Is this a difficult repair? I would like to know before just tearing everything apart and wishing later that I would have waited.

Well said..."problem" assumes a weak spot, where this probably is not. It is a very nicely made box with nothing cheap about it. I broke the shaft when I hit a pothole next to a rock which yanked the steering wheel out of my hands and forced the front wheel further than it could go. Something had to give. Inside the box there was plenty of grease and everything was still tight.
Your tip about Hoye Tractor was a good one...they do have complete new steering boxes for $455, but they also had the sector shaft I needed so I'm all set. Thanks for the help.

Ann, based upon what I found it looks like your info is correct. But this I know, at the current price of mid $4 for corn, glad I rented my land this year. With the yeilds some of the corn belt gets that may work but our lands yeilds much less but input cost are really only lower in land rent.
