when i was younger i heard the cub cadet was the mower to buy. WHAT HAPPENED ? I gave around 1700 dollars for a cub cadet lt1042. i would been better off with a 800 dollar murray. I THINK MTD RUINED the name cub. the mower runs great . the cutting performance is crappy. I purchased the mower april 2 2008 and have NOT been happy since i bought the mower.

MTD makes a lot of different brands like White Outdoor, Yardmachines. They're what lite-beer is to non-lite. MTD buys the licenses to make and sell them.
On the face of it the consumer thinks they're getting a deal and the original name brand holder THINKS (short term) they're boosting their bottom line. They are, but not for long. You'll see the same thing when it comes most major name outdoor equipment. A friend who owns an outdoor equipment company told me on a particular brand of push mower-- all carrying the same model number--and sold at Home Depot and to commercial users too there are three levels of cost and subsequent quality. In some cases parts were not even available from the factory as they knew they don't last long enough before the consumer throws them out. And the parts are not interchangable between the poor quality and the best, and vice versa.
Even the smaller Deeres you buy at big-box stores aren't made by them. ....

And it's not just tractors. Real Maytag appliances don't exist anymore, it's just another marketing name. But the myth of the lonely Maytag repair man keeps on humming along.

MTD does own all those brands! They are different levels of options of engine, drives and decks.
I've found that what works for one lawn might not work for another as far as cut quality and as well for endurance. There is no one lawn mower that can handle it all! Just some that might do better in one type more then the other.
Build quality wise you are on the bottom line of their tractors. That is not what made their reputation forty years ago when all they built was garden tractors! The same holds true to jd as well. ....

Can you tell us more about the crappy performance. Maybe the unit is set up wrong, not level, etc.
As a contractor, I mowed a nice little old lady's lawn for about 6 years til she died. She owned half of a duplex that had a larger lawn than the other half. The second half was owned by a divorced lady that mowed her own lawn and it looked terrible. Toward the end, she asked for advice in getting her lawn looking nicer. I asked her if she ever got the blade sharpened. She said no! To me, it looked like the lawn mower ripped off the grass rather than cutting it. She didn't have much money, so finally one day I volunteered to sharpen the blades.
The blade was on backwards. She bought the mower from a friend that had it only for part of a season and gave her a great deal. Somebody at Sears put the blade on that way!
So, my point is, maybe the mower isn't as bad as you think. The 1000 series Cubs are entry level and should be about the same as a Murray, Craftsman, White, etc. that are all made by MTD. Depending upon it use, these mowers can give dependable service for 5 to 15 years or even more. The 2000 series are much stronger and better units, while the 3000 series which I prefer have hydraulic lift and power steering. ....

I quit purchasing "consumer" grade equipment a long time ago. My rider is a zero turn Gravely 260Z, trimmer is a new Honda (gulp, the Lawnboy died after only 22 years) and my chainsaw is a Stihl, to name a few.
Point was made by a couple of others above, the lower end stuff is just that. It should cut decent for its lifespan, may be a blade issue. My neighbor's Murry was delivered with the blades on backwards (15 years ago). Man did that cut lousy :) ....
