When a constantly-moving precision part lasts three decades I'm not sure it can fairly be termed a problem. But some owners store their tractors such that water gets in, and you can't easily access and then service this item.<br>

Jamieson Tractors in PA would be closer, and Gary Jamieson seems to keep most everything in stock, especially for export models like yours.

Jeff, the castellated nut is the problem.

Any time we run into one of those on any of our equipment we always swap it out for a nylon locking nut. The combination of vibration and impacts causes the castellated nut to back off, sometimes it shears the locking pin, sometimes the pin just leaves on it's own.

The nylon lock nuts seem to stay in place when other types of locking mechanisms don't.

Can you tell us more about the crappy performance. Maybe the unit is set up wrong, not level, etc.

As a contractor, I mowed a nice little old lady's lawn for about 6 years til she died. She owned half of a duplex that had a larger lawn than the other half. The second half was owned by a divorced lady that mowed her own lawn and it looked terrible. Toward the end, she asked for advice in getting her lawn looking nicer. I asked her if she ever got the blade sharpened. She said no! To me, it looked like the lawn mower ripped off the grass rather than cutting it. She didn't have much money, so finally one day I volunteered to sharpen the blades.

The blade was on backwards. She bought the mower from a friend that had it only for part of a season and gave her a great deal. Somebody at Sears put the blade on that way!

So, my point is, maybe the mower isn't as bad as you think. The 1000 series Cubs are entry level and should be about the same as a Murray, Craftsman, White, etc. that are all made by MTD. Depending upon it use, these mowers can give dependable service for 5 to 15 years or even more. The 2000 series are much stronger and better units, while the 3000 series which I prefer have hydraulic lift and power steering.

Sounds like an electric issue. Fuse, broken wire, relay, selnoid.

Does the selonoid click? If not check wiring, relays, fuses.

Relays unplug spray contacts with wd40.

Selonoid clicks mebe not pulling in. Unbolt slide out a quarter inch tractor should start. Push back in key on if tractor shuts off you have solved problem.

I talked to the dealer today and he didnt have any suggestions other than bring it in. Some times i get lucky and get the answer from them. If i work it out i will post as well.

Options:

The inexpensive Kioti line starting at 20HP all have subframes.

You could build your own subframe or have a metal shop do it.

You could mount to the hitch and avoid full force.

You could rent or hire a hoe when you need one.

There are all kinds of opinions on the use of corn to produce ethanol for fuel use. I haven't kept up to date on the number of bushels now being used for ethanol, but it is increasing every year. There are those who think it is wrong to use a grain to produce fuel that could be used to feed people. Another group says the feeding corn to livestock is wrong, yes it would be more effecient to feed corn diretly to people rather than produce meat with it, but how many people would like to eat cornbread or corn mush every day rather than meat? Agreed there are people here and in other countrys who are hungry, but usually the political system of other countrys is a roadblock to getting food to the hungry.
Without a catostropic worldwide weather event we will not run out of corn. The genetic traits of modern corn hybrids, the vast improvments in soil, water, and nutrient care and useage, plus the management abilitys of the producers have raised average yields to levels we thought pie in the sky just a decade ago. Without doubt the average yields of today will look limp ten years from now.
Supply and demand will dictate how much corn or any other grain will be used for ethanol.

My neighbor has a Kubota BX 2200 tractor and is experiencing the steering wheel turning with no change at the front end, it does this randomly while making a right hand turn. Under the steering wheel appears to be a hydraulic servo set up that powers a double ended cylinder to control the steering. What should I try first, any help is greatly appreciated.<br>

You could Google "tractors + manuals" and see.

You could email both Wix and Baldwin with the dimensions and ask. With air, the size has to be quite exact.

Hey folks,

I too needed a manual for my year 2000 model 7305 went to that link and it said no manual found. Dealer no help. I then called MTD and asked for the manual, they told me it was no longer available. No longer available? You must be kidding I said! I have 250 hours on this $18,000 machine and you can't supply me with a service manual? Unbelievable! Had to download one online in PDF. MTD cares absolutely nothing about customer service.

You need to go to your friendly John Deere dealer and borrow a clutch pulling tool to remove your clutch. Once you get it off you need a clutch repair kit that has a tapered piece that goes in a vise to hold the clutch while you remove the spyder. Probably takes 400/500 ft/lb torque to get the spyder unscrewed. Once you get the spyder off, you can knock the roller pins out of it and remove the rollers. You will find a paint dot on a spyder arm, mark the clutch tower next to that arm so you can put it back together the same way, it is balanced. You can't buy the rollers separate, that would be too easy, you need to buy the spyder with the rollers in it. John Deere is like that, you know.

Just take a screwdriver and pry that old seal off. There is a lip on the valve guide that holds it on. The new one just fits down over the lip and the little spring around it holds it in place. Maybe when the valve wasn't working properly the seat or the valve face got damaged. You could have damaged the head gasket too. Is the push rod bent? The valve springs wear out also. You really aren't gaining anything if you take that bottom retainer, as you call it, off. It is just a locator for the valve spring, nothing under it.

Hi Paul,

I have a Cub 7304 and love it. Live in Canada and it lives outside under a tarp and it starts all winter with no big problem. Just hit the glow plugs a few times ( no block heater ).
Done tons of work with it and it just keeps plugging away.

Bought with a loader on it. Loaded the tires, stuck a 6' blade on the back and has done all I have asked of it.

If the price is right, they are a really nice little tractor.

Doubt a filter would be so blocked in so few hours. I suggest getting a service manual, which should have a troubleshooting guide for hydraulic failure.

Ron, when it comes to the RPM what does the owner manual say---to me that's the only thing I listen to. A lot of testing for durability has to happen before that machine is ready for the public. The mfg. knows exactly what RPM is best for any given job/ground speed.

Just like when and engine is to be broken in the mfg. says NOT to run it at a certain RPM--rather vary the RPM to the cyylider walls and rings have a varied exposure to break-in wear.

And it's not a matter necessarily of lugging the engine per se. The engine has to be in a certain range to operate efficiently, effectively and not create excessive amounts of unburned fuel. And engine wear all revolves around the aforementioned.

If you think about it, all things being equal there is more chance for blow-by to occur (i.e. less power developed) at a lower RPM than a high even if time were a factor for the simple fact there is less time for it to blow past the rings.

And I want to stress that today's engines are nothing like the old ones. Better machining practices, better materials, tighter tolerances have lead to higher-RPM engines.

You have some differences from the hitch control to the weight of the chassis which also gets into the attachments that go on each.

They are both good tractors with out problems.
