The problems I deal with are often debated right here within the home. Do I go out and clean the driveway while the wind is blowing, at -10 degrees -- or wait until the wind dies down and then tackle the project when it's 40 below zero?

I don't like to operate my equipment in the extreme cold. It's just not good for the machinery. NOTHING likes to move in these extremely cold temperatures. Mechanical devices can be forced to turn, but I don't like it when the vehicles talk back to me........and oh....they do make some awful sounds.

It's currently 20 degrees below zero. The wind is fairly calm. It might be a good day to go out and clean the driveway, but now I don't have the wind to help me move the snow when I blow it. With the wind blowing, the snowblower moves the snow nearly twice as far.

We haven't had any melting days since the middle of November. The weather man says we hit 32 degrees once since November 15th, but only for an hour or two. The snow is beginning to pile up around here.

I'm beginning to look forward to the mosquitoes and biting flies. I've about had my fill with winter.

My hot peppers are now two inches tall. I'm growing them in pots in the living room window. I look forward to the day when I transplant them outside.....on or around Memorial Day. (We had three inches of snow on Memorial Day last year, and I lost about a dozen plants because of it.)

Hardwood, we built again completing it in 2000. We have block window beside a tub on a West facing wall. Not something I wanted buy my wife and builder thought a great idea and was an in thing then, not sure if now here. Great engery hole in the wall or our's is. This past year we installed an insulated blind over it and that helped a ton. The western sun heated that bath room by at least 5 degrees in summer and the heat loss in the winter was maybe 3 degrees. You can not put any kind of tinting on the inside if the window due to the texture design (our's any way). It did let a lot of light in and even with the insulated bind lets enough in for noraml bath room use in daylight.

They could be improved them greatly or we may have the worst brand, but our builder was very careful on such and it is my guess at the time we built they were in the top of ratings. Could you install the self contained storm windows over your current window at lower cost and better insulation? Should also solve the other points Ken and Joel mentioned. kt

Oh, did I say, you can see more through them then you may think? An object close to them at night can be seen right well.

Here is the literature that I got from Kwik-Way on a couple of implements that they used to make for the 2040. The no longer make anything for the 2040. They do still make the loader, but not the mounts. The same loader fits many different tractors, using different mounts. They also made a power steering kit, to go with the loader, but I lost that sheet. If I ever find it, I'll be sure and post it too.

By the way, I got permission from Kwik-Way to publish this info on-line.

Smaller, but I built a 24x24 hay shed this summer with 14 foot walls. Material costs plus a bobcat rental to dig the post holes to 6 feet, was $6000. All labour done by myself and then pregnant wife!
Didn't have a tractor, so we spread the gravel by hand. But was not as much as you will have in the barn.
A guy with a bobcat will set you $40 to $60 an hour for the top soil removal and the gravel spreading. In my area, gravel goes for around $22 a yard, in large quantities.
Our barn is hopefully going to be around 32x60 and we were quoted around $12k for materials, including metal siding, and 12 feet tall. Its not a bad do it yourself project, but allow more time than you think, and get a couple friends and some scaffolding to get the trusses up. We used a rope on each end, and it wasn't so bad.
What are you going to use for a gravel base, we are curious as to what people lay down....Good luck!

Thanks Murf. I'm not too worried about belts, since many of our vehicles have had them, but still prefer a chain. Maybe it's all in my head. I've had chain issues too, an old Opel wore through the chain tensioner every 50k miles or so and fixing that was every bit as bad as changing a belt. Still, the chains give me a warmer, fuzzier feeling.

Kirk; Just another thought. Obviously if your old chain is rusty it was not stainless steel. Lots of snowblowers and other machines that operate in wet or corrosive conditions use stainless steel roller chain, a bit pricey, but it never rusts. Frank.

From what I've read in my manual, I'm going with 450 lbs. My AG tires are not loaded so that made me jack up the weight a bit. 6 bags of concrete mixed up should do the trick.

I've never heard of any problem with that motor. There are many old L245s in operation around the country.

Usually, when a crankshaft breaks, it is due to operator abuse.......with ether being the #1 culprit.

In cold weather, some people will spray ether into the air cleaner to help get a diesel engine fired up. However, ether is a very bad choice, due to its explosive characteristics.

When ether ignites, it can cause the piston to drive downward with such force as to either deform a bearing, or break a rod, or crack a piston. I've never heard of a crankshaft breaking from using ether, but I'm sure it's possible. Putting ether in a diesel engine is akin to packing it with dynamite.

I'm all but certain that this crankshaft was broken due to operator abuse.

My wife's is basically a standard edition other then the spoiler as it even has cloth seats, as she doesn't like leather! (or chains) The 07 is so much better then the 04 edition. We have picked up over five mpg just breaking it in, this car unlike the old one barely needs a passing gear with the extra fifteen horsepower.

The industrial tires will carry a load better then the ag or turf tires. For traction I like the turfs for winter snow removal as they give the most amount of contact so there is less chance of traction loss. They work the best on blacktop surfaces but also do well gravel driveways with the key being that normally the bulk of the snow has been removed. The ag tires are the diggers! They are great for working in fields and in deeper snow that hasn't been plowed but as Ken stated earlier they can be rough on a soft lawn.

Sure am glad it was minor. I have one tractor I have to keep oiling the linkage on it will tend to rust tight. kt

Air in the circuit would cause jerking. I still think either the pump is shot, or you've got something clogging up the suction strainer. Any way you can get a gauge on one of the pressure lines? I used to have a 240, but I don't remember any more where the suction strainer was located.<br>

Although I will talk to you as soon as I can either way. [Not that Earth Shattering anyways]for someone in the earth moving buisness but for the home owner it would be nice.

It is my understanding that every aluminum intake manifold gasket on a GM 3.1 and 3.4 engine went bad between 70,000 and 111,000 miles. Many of the 3.8's did it as well.

I had mine done on my Grand Am GT 3.4 at about 95,000 miles. It was done by a shade tree mechanic for about $600.00 which was cheaper than Mr. Goodwrench. I understand he used different gaskets which hold up longer. Mr. Goodwrench uses the factory ones which go bad again in about the same or shorter interval of mileage.

Thanks Ken, didn't know that a suit was pending. Don't have a receipt to make any claims!

I have a john deere 47 inch 2 stage snow blower that has been back to the dealer 3 times since I bought it this winter. First the link between the PTO shaft and the second stage snapped. Second it was making a LOT of noise in that same linkage area. Dealer fixed it , said the factory used the wrong bolts and third a plate that the shear pin goes throught snapped in half. The dealer thinks I hit something but I know I didn't. I have a brand new paved driveway and this happened 3/4 of the way up the middle. Has any one else had problems with this snow blower?

Yes, the proper term of the plotter is an inkjet printer. Mine inkjet printer plots from either 24" or 36" roll sheets. The term plotter which was used in the past is still frequently used to describe a wide format printing device used primarily to plot engineering drawings.

There is nothing wrong with the unit but no longer being software supported since this is a through away society were nothing should last nor be used beyond a couple of years.
