Well last Saturday my neighbor helped me get the tire off and I took the tire in to the local tire dealer. They put a tube in it and filled it with liquid and air. Brought it back home and mounted it on the tractor. Everything was good except profile of the repaired tire was about a half inch higher than the other tire. By then it was too late to do anything so I parked the tractor back in the shed for the night. Sunday evening I was out in my shed and I noticed another puddle of liquid that was coming from the valve stem of the repaired tire.

Yesterday I stopped in the tire dealer and told them what was happening. The manager said they would send a service truck out to check the leak. I told them to bring a another tube and put it in the other tire. The service truck showed up this morning and put new tubes in both tires. Now the tractor sits level and as of tonight there are no signs of any leaks. Hopefully the end of the story.

Lesson learned: Next time call a service truck like some of you suggested. The service truck guy was experienced in working with bigger tires like tractor tires. Not sure of the same about the guys working at the shop in the store.

You'll also want to check the screen on your pump intake (sump screen), which is located in the hydraulic fluid reservoir. Your manual should point this out.

If that screen is plugged up with debris, it will prevent fluid from getting to your pump, causing cavitation, noise, and poor performance. This can also destroy your pump.

It is generally not necessary to replace this screen. It can be cleaned off with diesel fuel, or kerosene, and then reinserted.

I'm all but certain that these services will cure your problem.

I see the trenches have water standing in them. Do these trenches run all the way to the river, and do they drain into the river? If so, why is there so much water standing in the trenches?

If your trenches do not extend all the way to the river, you'll need to finish that project. Drain off as much excess water as possible. During dry periods, those trenches can then be used as irrigation ditches.

Once the soil has dried quite a bit, you can then take a plow to it. Turn that sod over and allow it to dry out. That will kill most, if not all of the weeds and vegetation currently growing on it.

You'll need to use a plow with a coulter installed on it, in order to cut through the deep root mass. Without a coulter, the sod will run up over your plow and make it very difficult to work. The coulter acts much like a knife, in that it will cut the sod, allowing the plow to roll it over.

Your land looks very nice. You've done a fine job of things so far. You're coming along well, and it won't be long before that land starts making money for you.

I looked at the Toro two-cycle a couple of years ago for one of my sons. It is almost as large physically as the four cycle but assume it would weigh in less. Seems to me the dealer was retailing them for around $700.

I ended up with an Ariens only because they were sold out of most of the Toro models. Still feel that would have been a great machine. The one feature I would surely want is a positive lock axle that unlocks.

For future reference, the entire manual is available via pdf. on the woods website. I have it saved on my computer as well as the original. I've got a feeling though that something is up because I still get a fair amount of snow falling back in but all bolts and keyways check out ok. I'm still leaning towards reducing the clearance between fan and housing. I was able to clear the 15-18" we have received over the last two days though.

Murf, I am curious as to the design of the snowplow based quick-hitch. Could you provide a link or model name that I could search so I can see what it looks like? My concern is that it sounds like another male/female type of design and these seem to exceed the desired price range, as well as requiring a receiver for each implement. Thanks.

Most tractors have some camber and toe in the wheels, to assist in handling.

The amount of "camber" can be viewed from the front of the tractor. The tops of the tires are closer together than than the bottoms.

"Toe" is a setting that can be viewed from the top. The distance between the leading edges of the front tires is greater than the distance between the trailing edges of the front tires.

The last suspension setting is called "Caster". This is the amount of pitch built in to the king pin, which usually leans to the rear of the vehicle. After making a turn, your vehicle will usually attempt to straighten itself back out, even if you do not turn the wheel. The steering wheel will turn back to the center, or near-center all by itself as you travel forward.

The amount of Camber, Caster, and Toe built in to your front suspension should be listed in the maintenance manual for your tractor.

If you feel that you have badly worn suspension parts, simply block the front of the tractor up after raising the front tires off the ground with jacks, and then grab the wheels and attempt to rock them back and forth. If you feel a lot of play in the wheels, it's possible that you either have worn tie rods, king pins, wheel bearings, or all three.

Thanks for the reply. After changing the filters and fluid I believe as you suggested the brakes were causing the issue. I'll go through the linkage and make sure everything is loose. So far it has been running good ever since. Pulled the kids around in the snow all weekend.

Dave see my pic #9. I do a couple drives backing up them that require all 4 chained up

Many times I do not run fronts. But with bucket on I can install them in 5 minutes. Rear chains stay on all winter if I have to put them on. They, rears, weight over 100#s each. There is a lot of iron in them...Homemade... x links every other side link heavy duty truck and grader chain.

They, fronts, are only on in the extreme conditions. Typically I can wind up the drive line tighter in the summer doing dirt work then I can on ice and snow even with chains.

Well pinched line it is. The return line is smashed flat right where it turns to go back into the transmission. Looks like the mower deck came up to far and squished it.

I can appreciate what you're saying about the rubber parts. The idea was not to toss in a bottle of additive and be done with it, but to add it, let it absorb the moisture, then drain.

Iso-Heet is just isopropyl alchohol. Once drained and refilled with high quality oil (w/o additive), I would think any remaining alchohol would be too diluted to damage the seals. But maybe any advantage in absorbing the moisture is outweighed by the risk of not getting enough of it out. The system holds nearly 9 gallons, but I won't be able to drain every drop of that.

I do hate the thought of flushing 18 gallons or more of oil through the tractor, if there is some way to get all the moisture out with just one drain.

Have you guys ever noticed what New Holland uses (or used to use) on their bi-directional tractor? If I'm reading it right, VT tires. They are very similar to huge R3's. It makes sense as I seem to be backing under power as much as going forward (snow blower, box scraper, pulling snow away from buildings with the loader). Just checked their web site and it looks like the pictures have R1's again.
