Bvance; When I said I win a few I loose a few I meant I was out voted on Triplebogie's question. If I were buying a new tractor tomorrow it would be a 12/12 reverser hands down. I've ran hydro drive combines since they were introduced in the late 1960's, that was a perfect situation for hydros, all combines today are hydros. I lost my intrest in hydro drive tractors when International Harvester brought out the 656 and the 1026 hydro drive tractors in the late 60's or early 70's. I never drove a 1026, but we had a 656 hydro in the family. It was a great baler tractor with the infinite speed so long as someone drove it that knew better than to shove the speed control lever quickly one way or the other and throw the man off the hayrack that was loading bales. Finally for that reason we quit using it unless the driver was a VERY seasoned operator. It was in the family for probably ten years till my uncle who actually owned it traded it for a gear drive. Even in those days when gasoline was almost free compared to today my uncle quit using it for drawbar work because of it's thirst for fuel compared to a gear drive. Far as I remember they were just as dependable as a gear drive, but just too fuel hungry. There are still some of them around. Every tractor manufacturer today makes a pitch for their infinitely variable speed drive transmission. They are not a hydro, they are a gear drive using using a hydraulic motor or motors to control the speed variation, so an entirely different animal than a hydro. I've driven them, they drive just like a hydro. Frank.

I have a Woods for my BX2230 and love it. I also have the hardest clay in the world and the BX will rip through it with all 4 teeth down with no problem at all.

What do you need a tiller for? Is it to till every year for a garden then that would be great. If you want a tiller just to loosen the soil to move it around, don't bother. Just get a box scraper with scarifier teeth and you will be fine. I used a 50hp Skidsteer with a tiller and of course I had down pressure with it, and it would not even dent the clay. And remember you will not have down-pressure with your 'Bota.

A box scraper is the second most useful tool behind your FEL. You will use it a lot more than you think you will.

JD.....check right in front of the seat is a knob you can turn to raise and lower the 3pt fast or slow or close. I would say that you just need to turn the knob and it should lower just fine. Now i got the easy to use imatch system on the back and just back up and pickup without getting off the thing.

That is an excellent idea. I saw that mentioned in specs for one of the ATVs where a hand brake is employed as posi-traction control.

Nosteiner, the chimney sort of runs up the center of the house. On the main and upper floors the backside of the flue is in bedrooms and the backside in the basement is electrical panels. It's probably possible to put it somewhere in the basement and run a new flue up the side of the house but we don't want the EK or something similar in finished space. Instead we'll put the money into radiant floor heat on the main floor and see how much that helps during outages. If we could keep the house above 60 with no power we'd be happy.

Try spraying some penetrating oil on the linkage where it goes into the transmission case.
I occasionally spray the linkage on my 2001 DK 35. I also engage/disengage my 4 wheel drive while moving, and it goes in and out of gear very easy.

Thanks for the ideas, we will be going to the new place tomorrow for a couple days to do some other work there. I'll try the bleach, it is kind of a kill or cure situation. I learned today that the utility company there will give you a fifty dollar rebate and haul away the old WORKING frig if you buy a certian level of energy effeciant new one. They didn't say it had to smell good for them to haul it away. We don't have internet service there yet, so I'll let you know how it works out later in the week. Frank.

I had the same problem on my JD 750 a few years back and the problem was caused by moisture (aka rust). Basically the clutch rusted to the flywheel. Depressing the clutch didn't do anything, so it was very difficult getting it into gear. I used the backhoe to lift it off the ground and that allowed me to get it into gear without to much hardship. Once running the clutch became free from the flywheel. This happened several times before I installed a new clutch/pressure plate. When storing the tractor keep the clutch depressed (clutch plate will not be against the flywheel). I did find some info in the owners manual stating to depress the clutch for storage... Live and learn.

I had a TSC-like radio and it was junk. Bad reception, bad sound.

I ended up buying radio earmuffs from radio Shack for $30. They might fit the bill if you're going to be in the cold since they'll offer a little ear protection.

If you don't like that idea, try buying a decent model of a boat radio. They're usually in their own enclosure and have a dust/water door that flips down when you're done using it.

I have used a rope pulley system to cut trees with good results. I have used a 7000 or so pound tractor to pull trees while cutting. Using a long enough cable to have tractor just about in the next county with good results. I have used four wheel drive pickup same way again with good results. I have used Nissian pickup in same way with sad result of hitting my Mom's house takinng out a storm window. (really little damage but to my ego.) It comes down to something I think EW hit on, the weight of the machine you will be using compared to the tree, the leverage due to how high you hook on the tree, the angle of the tree, the wind, the way the stump is cut. I totally agree I do not want to be near a cable if it were to snap or come loose loaded. That can be fatal. When using cable with a tractor have always used chain between tractor and cable to help limit this danger. I also do not like the idea of winch on the 3 pt hitch due to the sudden movement it could have unless you have it locked down. Think fixed draw bar would be safer. kt
