Thanks, but I had the cap off when I was siphoning fuel and it was running. Didn't make a difference. Tomorrow I try replacing the fuel filters. If that doesn't work what is my next step...the fuel pump?

When I was in charge of the equipment at the land fill I had all my operators do pre and post production checks. An one of the items was air pressure. It is not a bad idea fro personally own operators to do the same thing. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to thoroughly check out the machine and to catch a problem before it becomes a failure or a brake down. Most operators manuals will give you a step by step too. I am sure most of you already do most of the checks like oil levels and grease. One that is really important on new machines is wheel bolt torque.

The driveshaft that drives the injection pump? The injection pump on this engine is driven by a cam that pushes little plungers on the bottom of the pump.
Fuel goes in the side and comes out the hard metal lines on the top. I thought maybe the seal on the one of the plungers was broken, but I have no way to check it. So I thought I'd get it running again and see if the crankcase fills up again. I already put a new fuel pump on it, so if I have the same problem, then I have a leaky injection pump right? I can't find a diesel pump shop on Maui. There's probably one on Oahu, but I haven't been able to find it. Do you know of a good shop on the mainland somewhere that is familar with the Kubota pumps? I can send the pump there for $8.05, have them check it out and send it back to me for the same price. The Kubota dealer here said they rarely have a problem with the Kubota pumps and when they do, they just replace them with new ones. Please let me know. Thanks! George

Last week I was on ebay and saw a Kubota 2630 for sale. They stated it was bought by John Deere and was tested with warranty pending. The pics looked like it was in Iowa or the midwest somewhere. Buy it now was 6k. I believed it because I know car companies strip them down. And why not? I emailed his personal email, not through ebay. He mailed me back and said it was his brothers tractor but his brother died in a car accident and the tractor was in England so he only had pictures until I send money. The next day the add was pulled. I knew it was a scam when he changed stories inside of two emails, would not bring it over to the states,would not let me see it, and of coarse a tragedy for sympathy. I told him I would buy it if I could see it and ride it for 6k. NEVER HEARD FROM HIM AGAIN!!

My situation is much like yours (3 acres to mow & another 2 to mow if I have the time and energy). After looking at all the options, I finally decided to buy a ZTR and I found a 2 year old JD 757 w/350 hours on it. I'm amazed how quickly it mows and the quality of the cut. I spent a lot of time researching ZTRs and concluded that most of the commercial models would probably last me for many years and it came down to price and the local dealer's reputation. There are a number of Forums devoted to Lawn and Turf and more info than you could read in a year. <br>

I sure don't know your tractor but it sure would seem unlikely the pto broke right when you stopped using it.

Are you sure your pto drive shaft is on the tractor's pto shaft, with the guards that can be hard to tell. If it is try, with the tractor off, turning the tractor pto shaft with it engage and see if it does free spin.

Does your pto shaft have a shear pin that was almost sheared and popped right when you applied load to it?

Hopefully it is something very simple that in your rush of concern you over looked.

thanks for the info. I have the price down to $5,200. After 4 mos of looking (ebay, machinefinder, tractorhouse, etc)I have not found anything in this price range and condition. I guess the problem is I am trying to justify based on renting vs owning. Any comments on the same or more experience with the JD 7 hoe would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

I believe you have been there reading your comments.

Some time back someone suggested wisely you should WALK over a piece of unknown land before cutting it. Good advice. Some other advice...know your stinging nest building flying insects. You probably will hit a nest or more and the tractor is much slower than they are.

I can't speak to the price, but if you google there are some Bolens tractor collector clubs that might help you out. It's my understanding that Bolens are sort of collectors items now. They might be worth more to a collector than a guy who just wants to get the job done. Bolens (the company) has been sold several times through the years and whatever is left is now part of MTD.

I have a 4710 with an LX-6 brush cutter. Recently I purchased 80 acres of CRP ground which needed a good deal of clearing. There were about 10-12 acres of saplings that needed to be cleared by August for the ground to stay compliant for the CRP contracts. Most of the trees in this area were in the 1-1.5 inch in diameter range with some as large as 3 inches in diameter. I was sceptical that the LX-6 would handle the job. After talking to my dealer about this, he told me that the main difference between the LX-6 and the MX-6 was the fact that the MX-6 has a double deck system where the LX-6 has a single deck. He told me I might put a few dents in the LX-6 but it should handle the task at hand. He did advise me to stay away from the largest trees (anything over about 2-2.5 inches in diameter). <br>

I have now completed the clearing and he was correct. I have a couple of dents in the decking where some of the larger trees hit but overall the LX-6 worked like an animal. I now have about 1/2 acre of the largest stuff that I will have shredded by a guy with much larger equipment. <br>

I don't think I would want to make this kind of work a steady diet for my rig but don't underestimate the capabilities of the LX series of mowers. My LX-6 paid for itself almost twice on this job alone and still runs like a champ. Heck, I might even treat it to a blade sharpening.

The last rumor I read was about engine/transmission options and pricing.

The DC rep was quoted as saying that two engines would be available, similar to the 2006 Charger. 5.7 Hemi and 6.1 SRT Hemi. I assume the 5.7 would be the same or similar to the 350 HP engine in the Charger R/T. Transmission choice is going to be either the 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. I read that to mean one or the other, not both available.

On price, the rep was quoted as saying right in line with the current Charger. Which means low $30,000 range for the 5.7; low-to-mid $40,000 for the SRT 6.1.

This effectively rules out the bigger engine for me. Although I wouldn't rule out the 5.7 version.

Hopefully DC will firm this up a bit in the weeks to come.

I believe that knowing the right thing isn't hard; but doing the right thing can be.

Talking to friends (even internet friends) is a good way to cope.

We just had our first baby this year. I hope I'm never in a spot that I have to struggle with either taking care of him or taking care of my wife. The bond with a child is strong, but then, a good woman is hard to find, too. So I do my best for both, that is all I have.

Sometimes you have to realize that a perfect solution doesn't exist; you have to make do with the solution that is obtainable. Trust in yourself to make good decisions. (And don't forget to take care of yourself).

I paid somehwere around $475 for a King Cutter 72" three years ago. I have put it through you-know-what. The cutting edges are still sharp and in very good condition. Never bent a scarifier. I would strongly suggest getinga hydraulic top link which will make the box blade act like nothing you've used. Also, consider welding a short piece of 2" sq. receiver hitch tube to the back side of the blade box. Then you can install a trailer hitch ball or anything using a 2" tube--such as a vice on a pedestal/upright, etc. A trailer hitch ball on the rear is great as an attachment point for a chain when dragging a length of chain-link fence around to final-groom it.

A while back there was a long discussion on transfer switches and how to do it safely and such.

Our local coop just printed the way they suggest and found it very simple, pleased use sufficient size extension cords and plug your applicances directly into the generator. no transfer switch or any other connection to the house.

I ended up having to take the canopy off anyway when I bought a used speeco log splitter. Towing that sucker 200 miles on a 70 mph highway at 40 mph just didn't sound like any fun. Then I discovered how much better the truck drove without it - mileage went up and visibility was improved so I may not put it back on. And the compressor deal fell through so I'm still keeping my eye open for another bargain.
