The FMM idea appeals to me; the same thing applies to my NH tractor with the 3ph finish mower. I can reach things with it (going backwards in this case) I couldn't with a mid-mount. Not the reason I bought it, but it is an advantage for the type of mowing I do.

I agree that a used commercial unit would outlast me. We have found that to be true for every farm tractor we've ever had; these Appalachian hills just don't have enough acreage to wear one very much. The NH is the only new tractor I've had (or plan to have).

Are the ZTR mowers really as light in the front end as I've heard? One thing that turned me off of them originally was that they wouldn't climb a very steep bank; and couldn't tow even a small trailer.

If your budget will allow it; I woudld strongly recommend going with a heavy duty cutter. Allow yourself at least a week to recover from the sticker shock. ;O) Pretty much all of the major manufacturers build a good cutter. The MX5 is a medium duty unit. A great cutter but depending upon how you use it, perhaps not what you want. For the use you mentioned it would be fine. I cut MANY acres of land and have found that as it the case with our tractors in that we end up finding more and demanding uses for them; the same is the case for rotary cutters.

One suggestion I would point out in my opinion is that you want a cutter that has open side skirts in the rear. This will allow you to back over sapplings and "uncharted" brush as opposed to being required to drive over it. This allows you to VERY gradually and slowly back up over vegetation which affords you (usually) some advanced warning of an unscene rock or tree stump without having driven all the way over it. You can pull back off and take a look and remove the obstacle. Chain guards and a slip clutch are a MUST in my opinion. You can do without the rear chain guard but it too offers much needed protection for anything or anyone behind you.

In the end, I think you will have to decide how much you want to spend on a cutter vs. use you plan to put it to. As an example, you can expect to spend in the range of $3,400 for a John Deere 609 heavy duty rotary cutter and $2,000 for an MX6 medium duty cutter. If you think you will ever do any moderate to heavy brush cutting, I would go with a heavy duty cutter. It may cost a good bit more up front but in the end it will hold up and give you many years of reliable service.

I can't speak to the price, but if you google there are some Bolens tractor collector clubs that might help you out. It's my understanding that Bolens are sort of collectors items now. They might be worth more to a collector than a guy who just wants to get the job done. Bolens (the company) has been sold several times through the years and whatever is left is now part of MTD.

I have a 4710 with an LX-6 brush cutter. Recently I purchased 80 acres of CRP ground which needed a good deal of clearing. There were about 10-12 acres of saplings that needed to be cleared by August for the ground to stay compliant for the CRP contracts. Most of the trees in this area were in the 1-1.5 inch in diameter range with some as large as 3 inches in diameter. I was sceptical that the LX-6 would handle the job. After talking to my dealer about this, he told me that the main difference between the LX-6 and the MX-6 was the fact that the MX-6 has a double deck system where the LX-6 has a single deck. He told me I might put a few dents in the LX-6 but it should handle the task at hand. He did advise me to stay away from the largest trees (anything over about 2-2.5 inches in diameter). <br>

I have now completed the clearing and he was correct. I have a couple of dents in the decking where some of the larger trees hit but overall the LX-6 worked like an animal. I now have about 1/2 acre of the largest stuff that I will have shredded by a guy with much larger equipment. <br>

I don't think I would want to make this kind of work a steady diet for my rig but don't underestimate the capabilities of the LX series of mowers. My LX-6 paid for itself almost twice on this job alone and still runs like a champ. Heck, I might even treat it to a blade sharpening.

I have a 3054 that I've been bushhogging with and it was working fine.. I stopped and took a break, got back on and no PTO. The lever moves into position in both high and low ranges but it does nothing.... no noise... nada... the linkage is in proper working order which leads me to think i broke something more expensive ... service manual that i have fore it was translated rather poorly. Also noticed what sounded like a bad wheel bearing(well, what a bad wheel bearing sounds like on a car) on the right rear as the tractor was moving.. any thoughts?

The last rumor I read was about engine/transmission options and pricing.

The DC rep was quoted as saying that two engines would be available, similar to the 2006 Charger. 5.7 Hemi and 6.1 SRT Hemi. I assume the 5.7 would be the same or similar to the 350 HP engine in the Charger R/T. Transmission choice is going to be either the 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. I read that to mean one or the other, not both available.

On price, the rep was quoted as saying right in line with the current Charger. Which means low $30,000 range for the 5.7; low-to-mid $40,000 for the SRT 6.1.

This effectively rules out the bigger engine for me. Although I wouldn't rule out the 5.7 version.

Hopefully DC will firm this up a bit in the weeks to come.

I believe that knowing the right thing isn't hard; but doing the right thing can be.

Talking to friends (even internet friends) is a good way to cope.

We just had our first baby this year. I hope I'm never in a spot that I have to struggle with either taking care of him or taking care of my wife. The bond with a child is strong, but then, a good woman is hard to find, too. So I do my best for both, that is all I have.

Sometimes you have to realize that a perfect solution doesn't exist; you have to make do with the solution that is obtainable. Trust in yourself to make good decisions. (And don't forget to take care of yourself).

Hi Art Before it died and started losing power, the crankcase filled with what appeared to be diesel fuel. It smelled like diesel fuel and my hyd oil was still there so I am pretty sure thats what it was. A local mechanic told me either the injection pump or the fuel pump was leaking into the crankcase. Not wanting to spend the $500 for the injection pump, I went for the $35 fuel pump. I drained all the oil and put in new oil thinking it ought to at least start again so I can see if I have the same problem, but so far I haven't been able to get it started. Know anybody that rebuilds these injection pumps or has rebuilt ones? I took it out and it looked fine. Another mechanic told me these pumps rarely go bad, and I've not been able to find anyone who has a rebuilt one or rebuilds them. Thanks!

I paid somehwere around $475 for a King Cutter 72" three years ago. I have put it through you-know-what. The cutting edges are still sharp and in very good condition. Never bent a scarifier. I would strongly suggest getinga hydraulic top link which will make the box blade act like nothing you've used. Also, consider welding a short piece of 2" sq. receiver hitch tube to the back side of the blade box. Then you can install a trailer hitch ball or anything using a 2" tube--such as a vice on a pedestal/upright, etc. A trailer hitch ball on the rear is great as an attachment point for a chain when dragging a length of chain-link fence around to final-groom it.

A while back there was a long discussion on transfer switches and how to do it safely and such.

Our local coop just printed the way they suggest and found it very simple, pleased use sufficient size extension cords and plug your applicances directly into the generator. no transfer switch or any other connection to the house.

I ended up having to take the canopy off anyway when I bought a used speeco log splitter. Towing that sucker 200 miles on a 70 mph highway at 40 mph just didn't sound like any fun. Then I discovered how much better the truck drove without it - mileage went up and visibility was improved so I may not put it back on. And the compressor deal fell through so I'm still keeping my eye open for another bargain.

Insurance paying for it??? errrr?? No way Jose, it's your TAX dollars paying for the cleanup and the up-to $150,000 individual block grants some are getting. Plus their $2000 each FEMA evacuation money, plus up to $26,000 each FEMA grants right after the storm for households who lost everything---plus whatever insurance pays out. And no my machine isn't paid off; I made one payment before I came down here and 4 years to go. And let's not forget the $70,000 each FEMA pays for each camper trailer to buy, maintain, set them up. PLUS they pay property owners $400 month each for lot rental to put someone else's trailer on their lot.

I was speaking with a client today, I recalled him saying in the past that they had a ant problem because of a neighbour who had a lot of scrap wood and bark stacked up.

Although it would be tough on vegetation, his cure was to thoroughly saturate a strip of ground along the fence line with a strong CaCl mixture, like what is used on dirt roads for dust control.

He didn't do it originally as a pesticide, he wanted to stop the vegetation from growing along the fence, but soon discovered the ants wouldn't cross it either.

Sort of a scorched earth type of deal.

I put the Down Force Kit on my PHD to dig extremely hard clay and it made all the difference. But be carefull you can bury the bit in no time and have to retreive it with a pipe wrench, what a pain!
