I meant to mention that you can use a 30 or 55 gallon oil drum. They are not too difficult to move with a hand truck and strap. The 30 gallon drum is much easier to move. The drums are much cheaper than a tank. You can buy much cheaper pumps from Harbor Freight but they are kinda leaky. Just be sure to treat the diesel fuel with an anti-microbiocidal and good additive with a stabilizer to prevent biological contamination from setting or stale fuel.

Good info CHIEF and I'd like to add just because you have a 55 or 30 gallon drum that don't mean that you have to fill it clear full .

There is a big difference in weight between the two. B7800: 1740 lbs, L3400: 2600 lbs (cast iron vs. aluminum) If you need the pulling power, go for the L3400. If you need a lighter machine that won't tear up the yard as much, go for the B7800.

Thanks for the tip. I've made arrangements to have it serviced at my dealer under Warranty. He had a hard time finding the fan blade part even though I gave him a printout from the on-line manual. It just wasn't coming up on his machine. I'll let folks know how the dealer decided to approach this repair. Maybe he's got a trick up his sleeve??

SG8: You funny guy! FYI: Fordson tractors back in the early 40's had a factory-option for their 9N's for changing tires and adjusting the tracking width that consisted of basically two "kickstands" connected by a chain that lifted the tractor evenly by raising the 3-pt hitch.

I agree with Rankin about lowering the presssure to promote even tire wear. On my Ram diesel 4x4 which is extremely front-heavy compared to the rear, I have to run 20psi lower pressures in the rears (90psi fronts). Otherwise the centers wear out.

I hooked a sub soiler to my Kubota L3400 that was used on a Ford 2000. The shank appears to be too long for the L3400. Is there a sub soiler with a shorter shank designed to fit the L3400 or what do you suggest? Thanks!

Harvey, You are right in suggesting new belts and checking the variable sheave. I might add that if the center sheave on the variable pulley does not move freely, to try and work it back and forth by hand while spraying penetrating oil on it. That usually frees it up pretty well, but be sure to clean all oil from sides of sheaves before reinstalling belts. Also check for excess play in sheave. The bushing in there sometimes wears out. This allows the sheave to get "cocked" and it wont slide properly. my old 1963 110 was still working great when I sold it. Only needed lubing the sheave about once every 2 or 3 seasons.

Talking to your dealer is great, and I agree with that. But what's even better, is a real, hands-on demonstration. See if your dealers will let you rent one the way you want it say, with a loader for example, for the weekend. Let them know up front that you are doing some serious competitive shopping and you are about to make your purchase decison. Some may let you use it free, some may not. My dealer let me rent a used skid loader for $3000 a month. At the end of the month I returned it and decided to buy a new one. He didn't charge me a dime for the rental, and even gave me a $8000 discount on a new machine. SO my suggestion is if you decide to "rent" machine for the weekend pay the man and let them decide if they will waive the fee if you buy from them. If not no big deal---you still got the work done.

I have a NH 1530 which is hard to get the hood released. Once it releases, it lifts quite easily. Any suggestions?? How do you put air in the rear tires when they have fluid in them? Mine squirts fluid even when the valve is positioned on top according to directions in the manual.

I appreciate all your help. You "guys" are full of great suggestions. Thompson; I went to the powertrac site and I was impressed, but am worried about maint/repairs with no local dealer. I do have a 3rd stall. I have friends that moved here when I did and she has one gelding currently being boarded.He may end up here and they would then help out some, but they also work and have a new baby.Iowa; I've noticed that some of the MMM's seem to stick out beyond the tires. My ground is flat and open and I put in 14'gates to the pasture areas, so no trouble there. I may only need to remove it for winter if I went with the MMM. I have a small yard to mow and 3 acres of pasture. With only two horses and irrigated grass, I think I will be mowing fairly frequently. I like to keep my pasture under 6" height, hoping for lower sugar content. Horse Farmer; My barn is small. 36X48 with a 12' center aisle and 4'stall doors to aisle and to the dry-lot paddock. I do use a wheelbarrow/muck cart to clean the stalls. My horses use the stalls as run-ins and are seldom locked in.The narrowest gate I have is to my paddock runs just off the stalls and is 10'.AV&R; I will definitely check out the dealers. Hughes will; I think I would adjust to a rear mount mower, but I do have some "brain" issues with the MS. I can't back up the horse trailer using the side mirrors as I did as a kid...it totally disorients me. I have to turn around and look at what I'm doing. But I shouldn't have to do much backing up on this property, I hope!
