I understand these to be pretty simple and reliable machines. 2WD will reduce loader performance a bit. Current value? You might poke around on machinefinder dot com and see if you can come up with some prices for comparison.

Yes last year twine went up $10 a bale. Usually twine will take big drop the year following a large increase, but that is not the case now. What has happened with sisal is there is increased demand for sisal rugs. The most expensive sisal fibers from African sisal were switched from AG twine to sisal rugs but the demand has exceeded the supply of the available African sisal. The European mills located in Portugal have moved their operations to Brazil because of the logistics of now having to use Brazilian sisal for the European markets. The sisal fibers used in baling twine take two years to grow so when demand increases it takes 2 years for the producers to catch up.<br>

Any twine in stock now will be at a lower price than when the 2006 stock hits the market. Since we purchase thousands of bales of twine we purchase 6-9 months in advance. We have nothing to gain by selling a few bales of twine in stock now when we will receive $5 more for it in a few months.<br>

Plastic twine is made from oil and oil prices have dramatically increased since last years twine raw materials were purchased. Depending on the plastic twine desired, it has gone up $3-5 for next years market.<br>

This price increase will not affect the average small producer because they may use 5-10 bales of twine. What if you used 100 bales of twine? That would purchase $500 more of that cheap diesel fuel. Farmers need all the advantage they can get because they purchase retail and sell wholesale & work long hours in non-glamorous situations.<br>

Any that I've ever seen or built never had anything special as far as metal for the cutting face.

In fact the best one I've had so far the splitting wedge is a piece of 1/2" plate with two pieces of 2"x4"x3/8" angle welded onto the sides such that the wedge ended up being 4.5" thick at the back end. It was all just made out of mild steel. The wedge should, IMHO, flare at a constant rate, IE be a triangle, a compound curve seems to offer more resisitance than a flat sided wedge. This seems to be backed up by the fact that any splitting wedge I've ever seen is flat-sided, surely it wouldn't be hard to make them with curved sides, but they don't.

All my experimenting has shown that a fairly narrow lead edge, followed by a fairly bold flare works the best, then you are combining cutting at the lead edge with prying the wood apart with the wedge as it moves in further.

I hate to be the spoiler of all this good diagnostic logic, but...

These machines are built to South Asian specifications. They don't have a thermostat in most of their equipment. It would only serve to hinder the performance of cooling system under their conditions. As PK noted, they are designed to run hotter than our motors typically do in NA.

I suspect the culprit is nothing more than a defective temperature sending unit causing the light to go on at 'normal' operating temeratures. The $24.47 test would be to buy a new temp. sender and see if the light goes out, or even just ask the dealer to verify what the 'normal' operating temperature is.

MackVision, I too had a hydraulic leak on a hose that routed beneath the tractor. It leaked on top of the mower deck. I took the tractor to the dealer for the 50hr service and the leak was a warranty repair. I believe the problem was a blown seal.

He kept the tractor for about 10 days. This was the first of December '04 and I told him I wasn't in a hurry to get it back. Now a year later I haven't had any problems or repairs with the tractor. Dave

I have a model 7275 which is older (1995)and am very happy with it. It does not have a turbo. I have several local Case IH tractor dealers that sell the Cub line. Since Case IH merged with New Holland and they have their own brand, they promote the CNH brand more but still sell the Cub brand.

I can't remark on the model you're looking at. If you drive it and like it, are getting a good price and have a local Cub dealer for parts and service support you have the ingredients for a good tractor.

You just identified another problem when an adjustable toplink is not used. For (low priced) rear blades, the primary adjustment for angle of attack IS the toplink. The lower link height adjustment is for the amount of "float" you want to have in the blade; the longer the vertical link, the more the float range.

Perhaps you can add/remove links from that lashup you bought (?)

4 sec. is short for glow plug timing but, if the smoke is as bad as you suggest that 4 additional sec is not going to solve you problem.

I would suggest having your dealer check the injection pump timing. As litte as 2 degrees can make a difference.

That's what the state trooper told me too. But three hours later, 2 state troopers left with no identifying serial number. They said the transmission was changed, meaning there could have been a number there. The original owner did know certain things about it, like beauty marks on their wife I guess.

I appreciate the condolences. What's tough is that it's looking like a winter that I've hoped for and now I don't have a tractor. :^( I guess I have to live vicariously through you guys.

I know it's winter time but down here in the south it will be spring before you know it, my question,does anyone here have some info or experience with the Dixon ZTR mowers. I've been reading and looking at the 44"&50" models for grass cutting of coarse but also for vacuuming up leaves.My land is flat as a pancake and I'll be cutting about 2ac. I've looked at the ZTR's mowers at the big box stores but they look inferior.What i like about the Dixon there's a dealer within 25 miles,welded deck,built stout for a residential model and they claim to have been the first to build the ZTR's. Any pros or cons info would be helpful. Thanks//Headhog

You should be OK with a 5' mower.<br>
I ran a 5' brush mower on my JD 850 ( 22 PTO HP).<br>
It ran it fine most of the time. I would have to go slow in higher,really thick/heavy grass.<br>

How much PTO HP do I need for a 5 cutter

Well we had large graders and one 6x6 with a plow when I was a kid. It snowed so hard a few times,(with no wind) that we had to go probing for the cars. The residential blowers did not have enough power to blow the heavy wet stuff. I is a bit hard to blow when the piles are 12-15-20 ft high.
I can recall them sending a D9 down the road to get it clear after a particularly bad dump.
We often had sticky wet snow that would plug even the tunnel on the snow mobile. Just a little difficult to blow.
On the brighter side it was a beautiful sunny day in Alabama, it was the mid 60's and I was out working on the lawn this afternoon.

Yes I unfortunately know what breaks. I ripped the top plate off the cast frame. I was quite shocked, and even more shocked when I found that a new upper link plate cost 75 dollars. But at the same time I was really happy that the casting didnt come apart or the four bolts ripped off. I was able to reweld the old bracket and use it on a weight box I was making, so I dont feel it was a total loss. But I am soimewhat scared now to use it with much force. I assume tho that after 20 years of using the same hoe and somewhat hard, that it was gonna happen sooner or later.
Its resting now in the shed for winter...

I have a woods hoe. Are you looking to replace the hyd cylinder or the rubber bumpers.? The rubber bumpers are just srewed into the pin ends. Us e a large water pump pliers.If your still looking for help.
