I'm picking up a 24 hp (18 pto) Kubota 7610 and want a rotary cutter to reclaim/maintain 2 two acre pastures at my place in VT.<br>
I can get a King kutter from Tractor supply for $600. The Kubota dealer has BH and Woods in stock for $1,000. Any features to make the more expensive ones better? Any other considerations?<br>
The other thing is that I will be storing it outside for lack of space in the barn. How will they hold up in the weather?

After four years of work, she is finally in the water. I am still working on some minor mechanical problems such as engine alignment, timing and such but hopefully it will be a great summer of cruising and dock life.<br>

I've taken my JD4700's rear R4's down to 5 psi for a different reason -- Because the treads wouldn't completely set down on the ground, the tractor tended to slide on slopes while mowing with a rear mower, breaking loose rearend first. So, I tried low pressure to get more tread edge bite. However, I got negligible improvement (the sidewalls are too stiff), so went back to spec pressure. The only serious answer is to switch to radial R4's, which sit down on the entire tread nice. Only issue is $$$; Goodyear has some nice tread designs. too bad JD doesn't offer radials as optional.

I am redoing our front garden. I dragged all the pachysandra out of the front garden with the backhoe - added some rhododendrons, large white quartz stones, barberi bushes. There was already some holly, stella doro lillies, other varieties of lillies, pjm rhododendron there. Now it is raw dirt between the shrubs and weeds are starting to grow. <br>

I want some kind of mulch or rock cover in between the plants/bushes. I don't want another plant type of ground cover. I imagine we would put down landscape fabric and cover with mulch or small decorative stone. A landscaper suggested the stone saying it doesn't go bad - but I imagine you would have to clean and refresh it every other year or so. My wife has seen synthetic mulch - very expensive and I assume you would have to treat it just like the decorative stone. Regular mulch goes bad and has to be replaced (or added to) every two years or so.<br>

Any suggestions on the best way to do this?

Thanks for the replies. Ducati - point noted about sevin, my father-in-law used to swear by it also. Ken - I went to bugspray.com - interesting stuff, also looked at spot sprayers on bvance link. These are definitely possibilities for the long run. You have me thinking. For this year I may pay the low bidder to dust and spray ($250).

I was thinking back wards. My prices were for residential or houses. It would be less for garages/non-living spaces. Roughly $5 and $3 in south central PA. I can not see it being too much different up there. Are you concerned about appearance? If not get the 4x8 sheet insulation which is a little cheaper than rolled fiberglass.

Yes I have about 15 acres of flat paddocks in excellent condition to mow, with another 20 acres of bush. This tractor needs to be the right size (and money) to do feed out to all the horses towing a box trailer, mow around the house, mow the paddocks, FEL to do the lifting, make cross country jumps, make trails through bush etc. Have a Massey dealer in the area but they do not have stock and parts are no problem. In Australia Massey have a much better resale in my area anyway.

I have found two different engine oil filters for my BX23 both are Kubota part #�s one is a smaller filter Part # 15853-32430 and the other is Part # 70000-74034 and this filter is a little bit larger. I was just wondering if anyone else has run into this? And is there any difference between the two?

I am currently looking at new. I looked for some used tractors but it seemed like you would drive all over the state to possibly look at worn out tractors. NH told me about 17k for the tractor bucket hydro trans and a canopy and bumper but I think this is still negotible. I am leaning toward NH because of the financing plan they have available right now. Thank You for your advice

I have had the chance to tweak an RTV. First was the reverse and forward relief valves bumped it up to pop off 500 lbs and 150 lbs more. Second Tuned the engine to deliver a slightly richer air fuel till just a hint of black smoke was visible under a heavy load. Then to test it out I hooked to a TC33 and had a tug of war contest. There was no real winner both spun the wheels. So I mark it up to the mods done on the RTV. With a little more weight and possibly some wider tires and wheels I think the RTV would take it.

Art, they're a motorized dust pan. Only thing I can see they are good for is in a barn with a cement floor for cleaning up manure. Or moving material for landscapers in tight spots.

Supply port is generally marked with "IN" or "P", return port is generally marked with "OUT" or "T". If you have a PTO pump, you will need a relief. Not all the circuits on that backhoe valve have a relief cartridge, so you could damage your pump.

I don't own either one so I might be unbiased? Anyway, if the price is close on both and both will suit your needs, then you definitely need to consider the dealer aspect. Talk to the dealers and get a feel for how they treat customers with problems and how quickly they resolve problems. If you know people who bought from either one, talk to them and get a feel for the dealer.

The dealer can be a huge part of owning a machine. A bad dealer can make your life miserable and make you regret your purchase. A good dealer is a keeper and worth a bit of extra money.

Picture #11 is a pic of the trailer a friend and I built (more like he built & I helped ;o) ) It was built from channel iron and a shortened mobile home axle. I have had over 3,000 lbs. on it and it could hardly tell.

Consider a flail mower as well as finish mowers and rotary cutters.

Flail pros:
* much safer than a rotary cutter ("bush hog")
* no windrowing
* better suited to tall grass and weeds than a finish mower
* better quality of cut than a rotary cutter
* cutters (if not abused, on good equipment) shouldn't need regular seasonal sharpenings/replacement
* many models can operate in an offset position (to mow hedgerows, etc.)
* smaller (stem-stern length); may be easier to park

Flail cons:
* much more expensive than other types (but for some people, could take the place of 2 machines)
* dozens/scores of knives to replace vs. 1-3 blades
* a little harder to find
* heavier

If you want to mow the lawn then buy a craftsman - if you want a tractor buy a Kioti for the money (my opinion based on chairbound research) it's the best machine I have seen vs any comparison in the 20 to 25HP range.

NEGATIVE ='s Dealer network is pathetic in Vermont anyway. Kubota and JD have the dealer network locked. With a slight edge to Kubota.
