I have a Massey 1217 backhoe I need to plumb into a PTO pump. When sitting in the hoe seat looking at the controls, there is a hose on the left and a hose on the right. Both same size. Can someone tell me which is pump side and which is return, or does it matter? My understanding is that the pump will circulate all the time and draw from the loop as necessary. I also need to know if I need a pressure relief in the system or if one of the stubs on the control valves does that function? I going to put a tank with a filter on the return side just before the tank. Is a Prince pump the best PTO pump to get 5.1 gal per minute is my need?

Supply port is generally marked with "IN" or "P", return port is generally marked with "OUT" or "T". If you have a PTO pump, you will need a relief. Not all the circuits on that backhoe valve have a relief cartridge, so you could damage your pump. ....

Thanks for the info. Can you provide a description of how or where you locate the pressure relief. Does this have a return line to the tank? ....

The pressure-in is on the left side as you sit in the seat. The tank or return is on the right. The valve body on the 1217 has a system relief. Even the factory installed PTO pump doesn't use anything but the internal relief that your hoe already has. ....

If someone hasn't changed anything. The main relief is set at 2000 psi, the boom is set at 2500 psi, the swing 1000 psi and the dipper is set at 2500 psi. ....

I think I understand that the little screw in modules on the valve bodys are pressure reliefs. When an over pressure occurs the pressure relief opens and returns fluid back to the tank?
One last question. Is a Prince PTO the best pump to go with or is there a cheaper/better alternative? Anyone have a good source for tanks?

Why don't you just use the tractor hydraulics? The tractor has more GPM than the factory PTO pump does. ....

Well, since the hoe is old and has unknown fluids, water, or other uncompatable stuff in it, I didn't want to risk messing up my new tractor. I suppose if I could flush out everything on the hoe 1st, install a filter, that would be a possibility. The tractor dealer said that I could overheat the tractor fluid with extensive hoe use. I don't buy that since the b7800 is rated 6+ for gpm. I have been told there is a kit you can put on the rear of the B7800 to hook up to the hydraulics. I have read that you would get better performance from the hoe on a pto pump too, unsure if that is true. ....

All you have to do to flush the hoe is to leave the return end off of the line. Then move all of the control levers. That will flush the backhoe completely. As you extend and retract the cylinders there will be quite a bit of fluid that is expelled. You will need a suitable container to catch the oil. There is no reason for the tractor to over heat. It sounds like your dealer just wants to sell you some more expensive stuff. I didn't realize that you were wanting to put it on a Kubota, but that doesn't make any difference. The kit that you would need is called a power beyond kit. It allows the two backhoe hoses to be attached to the tractor. ....
