Mark, did your RTV make any smoke under load?

The reason I ask is that the usual way to tune a diesel engine is to balance the fuel & air mixture.

If yours smoked, it's starving for air, if not, it's likely not getting enough fuel.

If they have no control over less (or thinner) air the normal reaction would be to turn down the amount of fuel to maintain the right proportions of air to fuel. In fact there really is no adjustment that can be made to the airflow to the engine so adjusting fuel is the only option.

In your case you need to go the other way around. You need to find a way to encourage more airflow. It might be worth an experiment. I would first hobble together some sort of temporary exhaust, less the muffler, and a little larger diameter if possible. Then ditch the factory air box in favour of a high flow K&N or similar air cone with a re-useable element.

I know on a pickup diesel, just those two changes will give as much as a 20% boost in power.

You may also find a tech or specialty diesel shop who can turn up the fuel delivery rate on your rig.

The other, more expensive option, would be to merely swap your fuel pump for the one for the next bigger 'Bota engine.

I went with kubota partly because my local NH dealer was run by dingbats and their prices were much higher for a similar unit.

If the price, features, and warranty are the same then go with the dealer who you like better. They will be the one you'll be working with long after the sale with warranty/repair questions.

I had a friend, years ago, who brushed a high voltage transmission line while on his roof trying to take down his ham radio antenna.

He lived, but he clearly lost a lot of his cookies. It burned all the hair off his body and melted the rubber heels off his shoes. He had a crescent wrench in his back pocket that branded his butt with a perfect impression of its shape. If I remember right it blew out the phone and several electrical items in the house below.

My opinion of stun guns is the same as my opinion of pepper spray. No thank you. When they work they are nice but you cannot trust them.

There was some video on TV last month of a guy who got tasered about a half dozen times by the cops after a high speed chase. He just kept pulling the barbs out of his clothing and coming after the cops with a screwdriver. They finally had to shoot him with real guns and that put him down but didn't kill him.

The same stories abound with pepper spray.... sometimes it kills and sometimes it doesn't work at all.

Bottom line: as a cop, after you used all of this supposedly fool proof, non-lethal stuff, you still have to close to within bad breath distance, lay your hands of the person and arrest him.

If you gotta do that anyway you might as well go to the dance with a stout stick in you hands to start with and skip the preliminaries.

I need to finish of the interior of my 24x40 pole barn and I am trying to decide if I should do it myself. I am capable of doing a lot of the grunt work myself but live a long way from the job site and have limited time to boot. I would like to be buttoned up for this winter and I am leaning towards spending money rather than time.<br>
With this in mind here is an estimate I got. Can anyone offer an opinion as to whether they think this is a fair bid. It seems high to me but maybe materials are more than I think. The job site is in upstate NY.<br>

2-construct 2x6x10' studding around entire ( exterior) solid wall perimeter ( approx 100 running feet)<br>

4- construct 2x4x10' interior wall (approx 34 running feet)<br>

Consider a flail mower as well as finish mowers and rotary cutters.

Flail pros:
* much safer than a rotary cutter ("bush hog")
* no windrowing
* better suited to tall grass and weeds than a finish mower
* better quality of cut than a rotary cutter
* cutters (if not abused, on good equipment) shouldn't need regular seasonal sharpenings/replacement
* many models can operate in an offset position (to mow hedgerows, etc.)
* smaller (stem-stern length); may be easier to park

Flail cons:
* much more expensive than other types (but for some people, could take the place of 2 machines)
* dozens/scores of knives to replace vs. 1-3 blades
* a little harder to find
* heavier

I am trying to decide between a New Holland TC30 with a loader and hydro trans or a Kubota L2800 set up the same way. Which do you feel is the better more reliable tractor. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

lucerne, I joke about skid steers being a gigantic hydraulic pump with wheels but very useful for the right jobs. There is a knack to running most things and one of the most frustrating for me was getting onto a case with the foot swing! Give me the old four stick over that unit!

If you want to mow the lawn then buy a craftsman - if you want a tractor buy a Kioti for the money (my opinion based on chairbound research) it's the best machine I have seen vs any comparison in the 20 to 25HP range.

NEGATIVE ='s Dealer network is pathetic in Vermont anyway. Kubota and JD have the dealer network locked. With a slight edge to Kubota.

That is not that all uncommon for different tractors to be left out for a period of time. There are times they might sit for longer depending on the selling season and the popularity of the model. In the perfect world they would come in today and be sold and delivered tommorrow, I've often felt that if I could get it figured out as to what to order and when to have it delivered to me perfectly I'd head to Vegas and make some real big money,needless to say I haven't started looking for my plane tickets yet!

I bought a tank sprayer that is powered by an electric motor that feeds off of your tractor battery. I just put the sprayer in me FEL. I found the 3pt sprayers just too expensive for how many times a year I would use it.

I have attached the site that I bought my sprayer from. They were good to deal with.

I was a bit concerned that a electric pump would be powerful enough, but it is. I got the 30 gallon model.

What you are mowing can help determine when to sharpen. If it is just weeds and brush, almost never. If you are mowing grass, you will notice lack of cutting, just swirling and pushing the grass around and ripping it. Time to sharpen. My dad mowed all over the farm for 20 years and never sharpened, but it was not grass.

I'm looking at buying a D3200 refurb tractor. Claimed is 38 HP and has 5 forward gears and High, Med. and low ranges. I didn't check the PTO direction. Is this likely a Viet Nam tractor? Better off to find a used engine for my old JD 950? Tired of wrenching....

LOL, thanks earthwrks. Nevertheless I sometimes think I'm the original Joe bflghtzx with the rain cloud overhead. I called the dealer yesterday who informed me there's a problem with the valve(s)(sticking?), and a new transmission is ordered and will be installed rather than to repair this one. Seems like a good idea.

I went back to the 80W 90 gear oil and that fixed the problem.Sometimes newer is not always better. I thought the UDT oil would be better.I would never have noticed it if I didn't have to get on and off the tractor.I still have to slow down for a second to let the gears stop.Want to thank you -John and 2ndHandLion for all the help on this one.

A 6" 3-point chipper would likely do the job but be aware that 5" hardwoods would be near the limit of what your pto can deliver. 4-5" stumps can be a challenge to dig out without a backhoe. It might be easier to do all your cutting and rent a stump grinder for a day. Better for the trail to leave the dirt as undisturbed as possible.
