I have a B6100. When I shift from gear to gear it shifts perfectly. But when it is in neutral with the clutch out and I go to put it in gear it grinds.It doesn't seem to do it when cold but as soon as the oil in the transmission gets hot it does. I'm using Kubota UDT in the tranny. I don't know if it needs an adjustment or different type oil.Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

When the oil is cold it helps to slow the gears from free wheeling with the shafts in the transmission. When hot they often spin or free wheel which is why you have the grinding. When shifting up your gears are in an aligned position which makes it easier then when just sitting in neutral. ....

Art Is there any way to stop it from grinding. I've tried lowering the rpms but that does not work. How about if I use 80W90 gear oil in the tranny. Would that make a difference? Originaly Kubota recomended 80 or 90 weight gear oil. Thanks for the quick reply. ....

I had a Kubota L245 that did the exact same thing. I suspect the clutch was sticking or a problem with adjustment. I never could get it to stop the grinding. My solution was to place the transmission in gear with the clutch depressed when starting and never allowing it to be place in neutral while running if possible. If I did have to put it into neutral, I could minimize the grinding by putting the throttle to idle and holding the clutch in for several seconds.......near a minute sometimes to allow the transmission gears to slow down and VERY gently engaging the gear. If I tried to force it in too fast it would grind. So take it nice an easy. I think most of these old tractors do this. Just have to get used to them.
I thought about using the 80W90 oil the manual calls for but that is outdate info. and I think the thicker viscosity oil would probably make the grinding worse. I use the Walmart transmission/hydraulic oil in the 5 gallon pail and that seemed to work better than what I took out of it when I changed the transmission oil. The Walmart oil is made for them by Pennzoil who is a subsidiary of Shell and is probably relabeled Donax. I think the thinner 30W trans./hyd. oil would work best in your case. You can use the 80W90 but it is REALLY going to slow down the hydraulics in cold weather not to mention probably make the shifts worse. ....

2ndHandLion I tried idling down and readjusting the clutch but just like you no luck there. My loader hydralics are independent of the transmision. I guess I'll take your advice and just take it easy like you said.I have a lot of work in the summer that requires me to get off and on the tractor continuisly. I guess it's time to do things slower . Am getting older and have to slow down any way. Thank you for the reply. ....

Its not ideal and somewhat frustrating but worst case was that when I had to get off the tractor and leave it in neutral idling; I would turn it off moementarily and then put it in gear, hold the clutch in and start it back up. Not particularly the best procedure and not helpful to the starter and battery if done frequently but it worked for me. Sure as heck is a LOT better to learn to accomodate crotchedy old tractors and their cranky personalities than making new tractor payments. The other possibility that I forgot to mention that I suspected what that the transmission input shaft may have been dragging on the pilot bearing in the engine fly wheel. I was not real keen on splitting the tractor to fix this so I just learned to live with it while I owned the L245. It was still a good tractor. ....

I'd go to the 80-90 oil and see what happens. Normally the problem goes away but have seen higher numbers run. ....

I have a B6200 with a similar personality. When I first purchased the tractor, I posted the "problem" on this site and received great feedback. One person said it best: "..you need to learn how to mesh the gears, not mash them". Ever since I have been doing better. I generally lower the RPMs before shifting, and I hold the clutch in for a few seconds before I gently mesh into the desired gear. This time delay allows the idler gear to stop free wheeling. It's been two years now, and my shifting habits have become normal, and the gears no longer grind.

I went back to the 80W 90 gear oil and that fixed the problem.Sometimes newer is not always better. I thought the UDT oil would be better.I would never have noticed it if I didn't have to get on and off the tractor.I still have to slow down for a second to let the gears stop.Want to thank you -John and 2ndHandLion for all the help on this one.
