$If they are really "like new" then they should be worth more, your statement seems to be conflictive. Perhaps you mean that they are actually well used but have been well looked after? To me that's a big difference. If they aren't being used and you have no sentimental attachment to them, sell them. You will get only what the market will bear which will then be their true value. It will cost you to keep them in "like new condition" regardless if they are used or not. Right now they cost you every year in further depreciation and you are getting no value out of them. As an aside: I see lots of equipment that should have been sold years before, it eventually lands up on the "was working before it was retired to the shed" pile. It then sells for a fraction of what it would have sold for if the owner had had the foresight to sell it at the time. The double whammy is that in addition to getting less for the equipment now the owner also has lost the productivity that the money could have been used for if he had sold the equipment years before. My general observation is, if in doubt sell it, I don't have too many regrets.$ Tractor Maintenance

I have a 1999 4200 collar shift also and it has had the same problem since I first bought it. The gears are not sychronized and do have the tendacy to grind, especially if the tractor is moving. Having a wet clutch keeps the shaft turning longer and I have to wait longer befor changing gears. It does not grind as bad after getting hot, I guess the fluid has less viscosity then. I have had this tractor for 4 years and have had good service from it other than having to clean hyd screens and chang fluid and filters.

Well, I talked to the dealer and he said "Just spray some WD40 on it." Now I don't think thats a good idea cause thats just a temporary fix. This thing is only about a year old with only 85 hours on it and has been stored inside 90% of the time. I would expect this to happen to an older tractor not a new one. Really moisture should not be getting in there, how can I prevent that from happening?

I have managed to throttle back a bit, or at least I thought I was until a couple of weeks ago when I popped for a dump trailer. I was cleaning my credit card and it went off.

If you are using a loader, turning the steering wheel will move the loader in the opposite direction some because the axle moves side to side. It takes some time to get used to, especially in tight quarters. Once you get used to it you can use it to your benefit. On a TC33D, the SS model has a longer wheel base which I think has helped me doing loader work. My primary use is mowing and am glad I have SS for turning tight. My tires don't dig up the yard even turning tight. My SS system seems to be a simple design and heavy duty. Drive both and buy the one you really want.

There are all kinds of web sites with cautionary tales concerning farm accidents and safety. Find one and e-mail to him; while you're at it e-mail to some of your other friends, too. A little education goes a long way in this case.

What happens with kids, is if they get scared, they will jump off of the tractor, not thinking of the wide back tires, or the implement behind.

Former Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson who founded earth day is not a well liked man in some parts of Wisconsin. He along with another "great society" promoter Hubert Humphrey penned the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act which gave the US government rights to force purchase of land on both sides of 155 different rivers around the country. And to make a long story short, the farm I grew up on and now own is short a half mile of frontage on the Namekagon River which we were forced to sell for next to nothing. Plus they still want an additional 1/4 mile deep for "scenic easements" which give you the right to pay property taxes but few rights of ownership. <br>

While I didn't plan it this way, I find it strangely satisfying that I'm celebrating earth day by preserving 1500 sq ft of earth under a 5" layer of concrete drive. <br>

Depending on what you are running on you could easily damage the four wheel drive system. The outside diameter would need to match if you are on hard surfaces. The inside diameter would need to match if you are operating on soft surfaces as the r-4 tire would be going in to the tire casing. This could make it so the front would be turning slower causing a lag problem for the front. The first thing that would be noticed would be more difficulty turning as you would be pushing the front. I've tried to miss match before and I've always found the weakest link in the drive system. If you only plan to keep the tractor for a short time then do it but I feel most dealers area aware of the problems with mis-matched tires and would lower your trade-in value to correct the problem at trade-in time.

You first might look to a company like Demco which specializes in spray equipment an do build slid in unit that would do your job. There catalogs also give you nozzle height and spread patterns if you need to modify. There prices are not quite in your ball park but their information can answer all your questions.

Hi, I found a nice 650 owned by a retired engineer who took care of the machine like it was his child. For a 20 year old tractor, it looks much like brand new. He rebuilt and repainted the deck (JD colors of course). Hours are just shy of 600 and he completed the 600 hr service interval himself.<br>

I have a 4' brush hog cutter that I presently use on my 855. Is this OK for the 650? How much weight should I consider to use on the front to counterbalance?<br>

I also have a tiller, but it is a 5' and I suspect this is too large. Will I hurt the unit if I try to till my 6" of new top soil just spread? Likewise for this or a smaller tiller, how much counterweight is suggested? I am going to tie up the 855 with a backhoe for a while.<br>

All my JD machinery so far is hydrostatic. How does one best use the clutch, brakes and gear selector for best operation and turns when cutting grass with the deck? I assume this is going to be a bit more complicated and slower than the hydro tractors.<br>

By the way, the 650 is replacing a 735 which is moving to another property we own. I will be maintaining the 25 acres with a 430, 650 and 855.<br>

Yes, thanks for your replies. I already knew about the configurator, I just want to find out what is the bottom price. I have a bid at $24,450 for the 4120 with the 400x heavy duty 73" bucket. I would still like to get down another $1,500 or so. I would help if I knew the dealer price and was hoping some one out there would possibly have that information. I have a 4310 with 430 loader and a 48 backhoe. Already a Deere fan, just looking for the best possible price on a new one. Again, thanks for your replies.

Are you sure the 3-point control lever is still attached? If it is loose on the shaft it is mounted on, you could be moving the lever but not the valve it controls.

Otherwise, not an easy fix. By the way, any normal 3-point hitch doesn't have down pressure. In any position you can manually raise the lift arms.

You don't have a draft control on that tractor, do you? The first time I used a tractor with a draft control, it had me totally buffaloed for a while.

Yooper, IIRC the older TC33s don't have very high loader capacity compared to the competition. I think the 7308 loader that goes on these has an 8-900 lb. limit where the comparable green and orange machines are rated around 500 lbs more. This was due to a weaker front axle. I believe the newer machines that used the curved 14LA loaders were redesigned with a beefier front axle but I don't know what they are rated at.
