The major drawback with most 'factory' QT systems is the cost. For what you get they are drastically over-priced. They are usually, IMHO, too complicated.

My system goes on between the FEL and the factory bucket and there is absolutley modifications required to either piece. The only change required is to swap the two lower pins with standard hitch pins of the same diameter, but a little more length. The factory pins can be used if desired, but without handles, etc., they are not as convenient.

There is no reason I can see why a QT system like mine can't be built for about $200 for almost any FEL.

I have one of those, mine was sold by the T. Eaton's company through their catalogue in the 1920's & 1930's.<br>

It even still has the original label and paint on it.<br>

They were (are) very common. We have several on our farm, both in the 3pth and horse-drawn versions.<br>

Thanks for your input. I figure the dealer is trying to show a high trade in number thus the high retail on the 4410.
He also quoted a price of $15435.00 with trade (-$8000.00)for a new 790 with 300 loader and #7 hoe. What do you think of the 790 compared with the 4410?

I just put a 60" KK tiller on layaway ($1220.45 + tax). A guy bought one the day before and was complaining that his came dry and the manual didn't state how much oil to put in the case. I didn't look at the case to see if all the bolts were in place. BTW, the "heavy duty" tillers are gear driven.

Definitely, when it comes to covered storage of any kind, experience has taught me to calculate the needed amount the same way I price jobs for relatives.

I carefully calculate to a very exact figure what is needed to do the job properly...... then I double it and then add another 30% for good measure. LOL.

Seriously, a shop can NEVER be big enough, too well lit, plumbed or wired, I know, I've tried. If you look at my picture # 2 you will see what I mean.

The original shop is the tall part on the left side. It is 40' x 50' with two 12' high bay doors in the far left side. Two years later the right side, the shorter portion was added. It is 25' x 50' being 3 bays for vehicle storage and one bay plus the extra space next to the tall portion as my workshop.

It is still not big enough, this year I want to extend the roof of the shorter portion out 15' to meet the wall of the main shop, this will give me another 15' x 50' area of covered, but not enclosed storage space.

I have a yardmaker and have had great success with it. If you plan to use it for first seeding you may want to go over the groud several times. Since the tines are 2 to 3 inches long and places slits in the ground several inches apart. I have also found that you have better luck a couple of days after a good rain if you have hard ground.
I use it to keep my coastal field in shape then overseed with rye and wheat in the fall with it. It is good for breaking up the hard ground horses can create. If you only drive over once, the coverage may be patchy because see falls in the holes then comes up. I would recommend going over a few times before putting seed in the hopper.
The seed adjustment is a little clugy but liveable.

I doubt they would be able to get such a piece of legislation passed, aside from the owners protests they would have the manufacturers lined up against them also. What company would want it's 50+ year old products labelled 'dangerous' in these days of lawsuits over things like hot coffee?

What they likely can do however, is make changes to something like the OHSA regulations to make the use of it illegal by anyone being paid to ride it.

They did the same sort of thing up here a few years ago. Anything that was equipped with ROPS from the factory had to have it in place in order to keep the machine in service.

It cost a lot of stupid landscapers a pile of money. There were many, many front mount commercial mowers like Kubota & JD F-series mowers that the ROPS had been taken off because they were a problem working around trees. Suddenly they were unusable in a commercial operation.

The only hope that lawmaker has is if he can get them to pass legislation requiring an operator to prove their competancy before they can run the machine. This is already widely the case with things like automobiles, boats, snowmobiles, guns and aircraft.

Hey Jeff,

I bought my little 224XR from Deals On Wheels in Pesacola, Florida. They sell assembled or in a crate, whichever you prefer. PH 850 478 6600

Make sure you get the options that you want from the getgo, and make sure that you get the adjustable spring seat, and don't let them talk you out of it. Options like canopy, power steering, and 4wd all add up, especially if you start getting them as add on features, later on.

As the article above illustrates, many roll-overs happen due to improper hitching of loads. If a load is hitched only to the fixed drawbar (NOT a crossbar between the lower 3 point hitch links), the wheels will usually spin before the front end comes up. It is natural to want to hitch high to get more traction when pulling stumps, etc, but that can be fatal. Also illustrated is the potential danger of using tractors as log skidders. The end of the log is chained to the crossbar mentioned above and lifted off the ground and away we go. Should something snag the front edge of the log, though, and the tractor could flip in an instant.

I own and use vintage tractors and equipment that lack many of the safety features that new machines have. My 50-year old John Deeres will never be as stable as low-slung utility tractors, so I must take more precautions of where and how fast I drive them.

Laws forcing me to install roll bars will not make the tractors physically less likely to roll over. It may, however, make users of old equipment more careless. And who will do the engineering and test work to verify that the axles and other ROPS mounting points on a 50-year old tractor are up to the task? What company would shoulder the liability of producing ROPS structures for every model of old tractor out there? Who would be liable if the axle on my 1948 JD M snaps off in a rollover because it wasn't designed to support a ROPS? Like was said above, sometimes the government gets involved where they should probably not go.

Be careful, be smart, and think through potential consequences of what you are doing before actually doing it. We owe it to our children to do nothing less.

I have just added Google to my unrestricted access file. Site works fine. I'll monitor that file also.

Also in reguards to the ad blockers. The pop-ups are a bigger PITA than the having to allow traffic. I remember years ago seeing my task bar so filled up it took 5+ minutes to clear it from all the garbage.

It really gets boring listening to your we're so small nobody bothers us.

Lets hope you guys running apples and other operating systems get to the point where idle minds with creativity decide to start on someone besides MS. That would be a good thing. More SW developers having to design all new virus SW. Another whole new industry in the works.

Thanks engineguy you are right, it look like it has moor then 5000 hrs. I poured some gas into int. & ext. no leaks, then mesured cyl. walls #2 it was .016 over & #3 .011, book sys .010 oversize. I need to call John Deere to find out if I could go .020 and they sale parts for it if not I have to find a used one. They sale a short block for $3300.and I don`t feel like paying for that.

Well, lets see. An amish farmer had use some local field
stone, rather than the cultured stone found in the stores. Put that about 4 feet up and then used t&g cedar attached vertical above that. Looked great. A nice touch could be for the cement in the 4x12 area may be to try the exposed aggregate finish. Or lay cobblestone or brick like is seen on some of the old city streets. Drive around the country and borrow some ideas. Theres nothing like some of the old dutch and german barns still standing.

skyraider, was that a BLUE top-n-tilt kit? When I looked at a TC33 NH didn't offer a factory kit and the dealer offered to fabricate one for me for around that price. I know you could install an aftermarket TnT kit on a green machine for a lot less than factory prices.

We are not planing on putting a loader on this tractor. It will be used to spray a cherry orchard. There are 3 just like it in an up coming auction in my area.

Last year I done a total make over of our front yard,you know the drill,round-up to kill the old grass, weeds etc. Had the soil tested and the ph level came in at 4.1 so the county agent recommend that I add about 1000 lbs. of powered lime to raise the ph level for the size of lawn and type of grass (centipede) that I would be putting in. The soil here in coastal Ga. is very poor and high in acid but it's great for growing pine trees and azaleas. I added the lime,till the soil,removed roots leveled and installed a irrigation system.We had centipede sod installed and the result was a beautiful lawn. Lots of hard work and lots of time. This year I have another yard about the same size that needs to be redone and I'm thinking about Hydro Seeding,my question is has anyone here tried hydro seeding and what kind of results. It seems quick and a lot less work and money.<br>

I saw something differant today, It looked strange , but thinking about it , there must be several good uses for it.<br>
On a compact JD , mounted on the 3 point , a large furnace squirl cage blower !!! It is shooting off to the left side of the tractor. The only use that I can see in this area would be for blowing leaves.<br>
Oh , I didn`t mention , the blower is powered by the tractor pto.<br>

You might check out a KIOTI CK25, you can get a full featured 25 HP 4wd tractor (bare) for less than the figure you mention. suspension seat, tilt sterring, up to the minute style, quick release lift arms, crank style leveling, folding rops, all standard. Two year full warranty, OH and synchro shuttle shift to boot.
Another choice might be a FArmtrac (long) 270DTC, again a shuttle shift with Daedong (KIOTI) engine. 3 year powertrain warranty.
You can get good service out of a JInma (including Nortrac) tractors, they are not as nice to run as a synchro shuttle tractor, but will save you money for equipment and attachments so may be more useful in the end. I sell the brands I mention here as well as the Farm Pro/Jinma line. If I thought I wouldn't use a tractor over 50 to 100 hours a year, didn't mind making an occasional repair from time to time and if my budget was tight, I would probably lean toward the Chinese tractor. Parts support is good and there is a strong informal owner group offering on line support for users, 24-7 as well.
Local dealer would be a big plus if you have on on any brand of tractor you consider.

There are many excellent choices in compact tractors today, in a variety of colors!

If the wheels are on the ground you are definitly cutting way too low. They are just to keep it from scalping, not ment to roll all the time. Kind of like the front wheel on my 52 scag. My Great Dane Zero turn also has side wheels and they never touch the ground other than on a of canter slope or mound.

Anyone know how many hours you can expect from these newer style twin cyliners gas jobs? I have a 22hp Kohler Command on my 52" Great Dane Zero turn. It's been kept up and still runs like new. I heard you can pull 3,000 hours out of these engines if you change the oil on time. Anyone up that high?<br>

I've had plenty of "K" series Kohlers last for ever. My 1986 wheel horse 414-8 14 horse still runs like the day I bought it in 1985. Not too sure about the "cast iron lined" ones?
